I Appreciate these Gentlemen and Their voices ... Just in case you weren't aware they were involved in a PBS Project With Spike Lee & Debbie Allen(From the TV series Fame) and several other Acapella Groups in a Show called "Do It Acapella" another group from that Show Made it Pretty famous as well Maybe You've Heard of them ... R
You are a....missing the words... dilighting to my soul!!! It is a gift from heaven! I love the group Lady smith black mabazo since i'm a child! I LOVE YOU, i love your songs wich are UNIQUE, i thank GOd for your lifes!!!! So blessed. Raw Talent!!!!!
I LOVE these men. I LOVE these men. I couldn't just say it once!!! They are beautiful people. This music talks to my core and I feel so good when it does.
@Kryptonitexxxxx Here's an excerpt from wikipedia: "Isicathamiya contrasts with an earlier name for Zulu a cappella singing, mbube, meaning "lion". The change in name marks a transition in the style of the music: traditionally, music described as Mbube is sung loudly and powerfully, while isicathamiya focuses more on achieving a harmonious blend between the voices. The name also refers to the style's tightly-choreographed dance moves that keep the singers on their toes."
The best art unites people and makes you feel something significant, even if you can't put your finger on what it is. Black Mambazo does both. They are a beautiful gift.
I do understand the song, they sing in english. But what is behind the performance, the dance I mean. Always when I have seen Ladysmith it has been the same but never had the opertunity to ask them.
@hhoijtink Here's an excerpt from an online review: "The group borrows heavily from a traditional music called isicathamiya (is-cot-a-ME-Ya). Isicathamiya singing style originated from the South African Zulus. In Europe this singing style is known as a capella. The word itself does not have a literal translation; it is derived from the Zulu verb -cathama, which means walking softly, or tread carefully."
This type of dancing is associated with isicathamiya singing. I also love it!
@Azizip17 thx for great info. - also, from Pandora ; Taking the choral music he heard in the Christian church, he combined it with the Zulu tradition to create his own style. "In Zulu singing there are three major sounds," Shabalala explains. "A high keening ululation; a grunting, puffing sound that we make when we stomp our feet; and a certain way of singing melody. Before Black Mambazo you didn't hear these three sounds in the same songs. So it is new to combine them.
this is nourishment for the soul, makes me feel really good. I don't understand the words, but I feel the sentiment. Pure warmth and joy. Thank you for posting this, it lifts me up! Transcends boundaries of race or language, that can only be a good thing! Peace
@mrgmakin the words are in english, just with the accent, when i listen this is what i hear: How long baby, how long should i wait for you. ... Oh number 1 is early, number 2 is early, number 3 is early early - how long should i wait for you?... mmm you stay away from me, i don't know why you stay away from me. Oh Mami you keep on warning me, i dont know why why why you keep on warning me. . . hope it helps
@YaniqueParson Ah, my apologies! I feel a bit stupid now. I really like the accents of the African nations, but when it is really strong it can sometimes be a little hard to understand. I haven't listened to this for a while, but your comment brought me back here, so I'll have to listen to it again now. Thanks for your comment.
Really beautiful - this is definitely before Graceland and Paul Simon, it's from about 1982 when they appeared on a German quiz show following an appearance at an SA music festival in Cologne the year before.
