I have a completely uninformed question, take no offense to it: does dry tooling permanently scar/damage the rock? i.e. does it ruin normal sport and trad climbs by scraping off or chipping hand/feet holds?
@vermontercm it can hurt the rock. but most of the places that ice forms, they arent very good for rock climbing bc the rock isnt ussualy very good, like its crumbly. because of all the freezing and thawing.
i understand free climbing ice because i ve done it but this is the next level of craziness...well done but remember rock is not ice and dry tooling is something that most likely you will fall one day...i hope you see many more years of climbing
@TristanTheSaint "I am not confident or brave enough to ever do something like this, so rather than acting mature about the fact that there ARE people who have this level of skill and courage, and appreciating or even enjoying their achievements while being secure enough to know that I don't have to take this kind of risk to enjoy the sport on my own, I'm just going to write off everyone who's better or braver than me as stupid and reckless."
There is a fine line between enjoying an adrenaline rush and playing Russian roulette. It´s really admirable the climber´s performance, even in the crux he didn´t shake or doubt for a second; however, the ice is much more unpredictable than the rock. This climb has turned a success and I must thank you for the great time I had watching it, but beware to not do solo ice climbing with a "regular" frequency. Remember that the worse enemy of an experienced climber is to have over self-confidence
This is called taking unnecessary risks... hopefully for you no slabs of rock will ever break under the pressure of your ice axe, not to say you are damaging the rock for the next idiot to solo this climb.
Call me whatever you want but for some reason this is the kind of stuff I will never do nor condone: I lost too many good friends to the mountain (Christophe, Stéphane, Loic and Krishna), for what? for this kind of stupidity... You may have balls but you have no brain.
@Portwoody Good point... I am not watching, I do not enjoy watching this, I have friends that have died doing things similar to this.
I am not watching: I am commenting and advising people not to do this, this is not fun, this is very very dangerous stuff, no matter how good and experienced you think you are.
Its much better to be a coward and continue to enjoy ice climbing with your friends then to be brave and to be five feets under.
@TristanTheSaint ....imagine a world without opinions, what a bliss place! I free solo cause its what i love to do..balls or brain have nothing to do with it...which tells me you dont know what the F$%& your talking about. Keep your opinion to yourself!
@Musty49 You are entitled to your opinion as much as I am entitled to mine... I do not want to change yours: I really do not!
I just want to warn undecided and unexperienced people that this is a very dangerous game to play, people die doing this, people I knew, I loved died doing this kind of things.
Should the burden for any one, regardless of how healthy or unhealthy, risky or safe, drug addict or not, be placed upon others? In my humble opinion...no. Does that make me a bureaucratic piece of sh*t? I hope not! Anyway, this is a pretty sick display of strength, grace, skill, and sheer ballsiness ;D

Should this guy be allowed to opt out of Obama Care? If so, is it fair to put the burden on the tax payer when he craters and survives? How about, if he opts out, he gets medical care to his and his family's (required) financial capacity, then my friend, it's the peaceful sleepy needle after that. Should this guy's premium be the same as the ho hum working man with no time for such pursuits?
he'll likeley be paying for everyone else scince he's so much more fit. he's probably injurd andsick half as much because his bodie's in such peak condition. I mean, have you ever tried a mixed rote before? A hard one like this and you're the equivilant of a pro-athlete. besides, if yu don't pay for him, wha about chain smokers, fat, cholestoral-clogged pigs, stressed out buisnessmen, alchoholics. they'r all more likey to need healthcare and through free decisions too. don't be annoying
Excellent poise under pressure. A very calm and well put together climb, way to keep it in, Jerry! This looks like an excellent route. Is it traditionally protected or bolted? Name of the route?
i just have one dumb question: If "free climbing" refers to ascent without artificial aid (except for protection), how can mixed be free climbing with the use of the hand tools. I understand he's soloing ropeless, but is it really 'free' soloing? Symantics I know, but I was just curious...awesome climb BTW
awesome. you cant shun a stunt like that. by being with the climber during a performance like that you are agreeing to 'clean up the mess if it goes wrong' for the sake of witnessing the ultimate experience. id go along for the ride if someone asked me- i just dont know anyone skilled enough, which is why its so cool to see SOMEONE actually doing it
amazing talent! but i always think free climbers are so selfish!! if he ever comes off its every1 else left to clean up the mess! im sure its an amazing feeling doing it but just 1 mistake and every1 else has to look after him then!
anyone who has ever ventured into the mountains searching for adventure is selfish. We're all selfish...climbers, powder skiers, base jumpers. its the nature of the game.
The track is produced by EL-P on Def Jux Records. I think it might be from the instrumental of the "Cannibal Ox" album "The cold Vein" Dunno what the instrumental album is called though.
man, although I commend ability and bravery... I hope you don't do things like this often as its incredibly dangerous. What would your mother say??? be careful bro

can happen... mostly because of people who don't know how to do it... if you know the rock well, you know how to climb it without damaging it

@seige184 pretty sure the helmet is to protect against falling ice, not for an impact with the ground.

Do you smoke?
Do you eat junk food?
Do you drive a car not only for work?
Well, people die even in their sleep. Should that not be allowed too?
If this climber didnt do what he do, he would probably be a narcotic wreck. Thats a fact!

free climbing is more accurately defined as supporting your body weight by yourself by using features on the rock, or in this case as too.
Aid climbing means that your weight is supported by anchors, temp or permanent.
