I have the dvd version with Elaine Paige, but I wish I had seen Betty Buckly's version. I've only heard her sing the song, and from my point of view, Betty's version is by far the best. I think from what I've seen and heard, Betty has a much more powerful voice. Obviously why she's named "The Voice Of Broadway." I do give someone else a chance, but when it comes right down to a song I LOVE, I do have my favorites. And it's Betty Buckley's version!
This is a good performance but the quality of the audio makes the singers sound like they're struggling, which they obviously aren't, as evidenced by their other performances of this song.
I believe this rendition of Memory is from the CATS selections and not the whole soundtrack. Betty did this in the studio and I think it's wonderful! And to the person who said she lacks power - listen to the video of her singing it at the Tonys - she blew the roof off the place!
I far prefer Elaine Paige's version. Buckley does very well, but Paige's is more haunting, and her acting through her singing gives you chills from beginning to end. There's a power missing from Buckley's version.
Seriously, I think Betty has a "Sunset Boulevard" take to Grizabella (faded glamour cat with proud/sad reflection), while Elaine takes a homeless (life spiralled into chaos) approach with sad desperation.
@GeorgeBailey2 Elaine sings Grizabella as defeated and hopeless, Betty sings her as down but not out and growing stronger as she sings. Elaine sings her as pathetic; Betty sings her as courageous. Two wonderful performances, completely different interpretations.
@keriah17 How wonderful we have both versions, me to enjoy both, you to compare and choose your favourite. I personally feel both in very different ways.
I could listen to this song 365 days a year! They need to put Betty Buckley on Glee!

Betty Buckley sounds like she has notes to spare when singing this song. So effortless and crystal clear. Wow!

@simayana Elaine sings as vocally great Buckley sings as someone who pales in comparison to the great Elaine.
