  • This diffently wasn't the Nimitz on May 26, 1981, Like some of the rest, I was also there and in a little more unique position. I was a Navy Photographer on the Flight Deck that night. I was Hell, The Plat Photographer was PH2 Gary Newsom, the 3 Photomates who were on the Deck that night were Ph3 Robert Sullivan, Ph3 Peter Walker and myself Ph3 John Robertson. I have been told that the Navy made a training film out of that night, it may be available somewhere.

  • I agree with anealysr. This IS NOT the 4/26/1981 EA-6B Prowler crash on Nimitz. I was there standing on the flight deck and eyewitnessed that tragedy at the forward Port Quarter Catwalk. I would have been killed had I not dove into a sponson. It was a real Hell, literally. But we stood our ground and put that fire out at a terrible cost in life and injuries. Among the first to grab hoses forward of the Angle on Port side. Not a day passes that I don't thank Almighty God!

  • My father died on the USS Nimitz in 1981. If anyone would like to share with me what my father was like I would really like to know. I was two years old when thsi incident happened and never knew him. Please send me an email to carolinamhinojosa@yahoo.com. Thank you.

  • @hinojosac100 I have Emailed you Ms. Hinojosa. Feel free to respond and if I can be of any assistance I will be happy to help.

  • @hinojosac100 My name is Carl Booth VF41 Power plants trouble shooter. I was in my rack that night when someone came through yelling fire on the flight deck. And this ain't no fucking drill. I put on my pants, put my socks in my back pocket and went to the flight deck. I fought that fire that night and lost some friends. If I can help you let me know.

  • The third video is from 11/8/98 so definitely not the Nimitz crash. Having been there that night, it does look like the second video could be the Nimitz, but the quality of the video is quite poor so it's hard to say for sure. Hard to believe that in two weeks it will have been 30 years since the accident...ABF3 Grape

  • @anealysr; I know it is not of the Nimitz, that is what I said in my other comment. The lens number on PLAT is 65. It is the Enterprise which is CVN65.

  • Sad. From an ex-navy EW in Australia. Keep talking about it, it helps. S.

  • 61 denotes the Constellation

  • @navydx CV-61 was the USS Ranger ... I made two cruises on the 'Danger Ranger,' one was with VAQ-137 Rooks and EA-6B squadron. I was a Plane Captain on the '79 cruise and I worked the flight deck .... The Connie is CV-64, and I don't need to google any of that to KNOW it ... Sheesh ....

  • my uncle was aboard this ship when it happened and when tehy told him to stay below decks he didnt and went out to help his friends and others

  • The last video on here shows what is called the PLAT lens infor, which is the info at the top of the screen. I am an ex aviation medicine technician and I spent nearly five years onboard the Nimitz. I hate to tell you this, but on the top right corner is the number "65". That number corresponds with the hull number of the ship. Nimitz is 68 which means that this video is NOT from the USS Nimitz. The Plat does not lie, there was a crash, but this video is not it, nor is it from the Nimitz.

  • @mcintearj the second video is the Nimitz accident

  • @mcintearj enterprise is cvn 65

  • @mcintearj

    61 F means CV-61 Ranger.

  • @mcintearj Don't know what you think this is but IT is NOT the crash on the Nimitz Also it was May 26 1981. I was there it happened at 23:45 and all hell broke loose, I was training the bravest man I have ever met that night. I also was the first one on a hose to try to put the fire out. That is the closest to hell I have ever lived. Alot of good men died that night, I was just lucky I was only hurt.

  • I don't understand why no one punched out. Nobody saw the rad-alt, airspeed dropping below stall, ?? Can't see the AOA in that video. It's a terrible shame to see a brave aircrew lose their lives like this.

  • I give credit to the Navy, because it takes some balls to land a plane on a ship. God, this video is scary. I know an ex-Navy guy who lost two friends in the incident.

  • Hey romeomoon2,

Everyone on board Nimitz that night lost something. I am sorry your lose was more than others. White had no intention of crashing that night. True he should not have been in the pilot seat. Your anger is the same that Ive heard from others that were directly involved. Dont know what to say past that. I hope this gives you a chance to vent and helps (however little) with the pain you are carrying.

    DG

  • Steve White was a fucked up pilot. Kill 3 of my friends.

  • @romeomoon2 that sucks

  • @romeomoon2 I've heard about Lieutenant White for years. I used to hear that people were wearing T-shirts that said,"I survived a flight with Lt. White". Terrible accident.

While I was still at Cherry Point, I heard that they found some "residue" in the cockpit. I bet THAT was suppressed from the report, too.

  • However, We are confused by the graphics branding on this video. 11-08-98 and the real time clock does not jive with Date / Time of the actual NIMITZ EA-6B crash tragedy. Your thoughts?

  • cant read the actual time on the video display. As for the rest there are 3 videos that came with this clip when I got it. A fellow in Australia sent it to me via hard copy. Can you read the real time clock in the video?

  • 08th November 1998 o/b USS Enterprise. all four of Prowler crew killed. Two S-3 crew wounded but survived. Only one body recovered among the Prowler crew. Three announcecd missing.

  • It also stated that unlike what many of us heave heard, there was NO ejection from the Prowler even though 1 body was recovered. The S-3 was hit hard enough to turn it and push it forward into 2 FA-18Cs that were on the bow. A total of 3 Hornets received damage from the explosion and fires. ANd, as we know, 4 people were killed, 3 were officially listed as lost at sea.

  • Some info on the last crash:

I got a heavily edited copy of the investigation of this crash through a freedom of information request. It states that the deck was fouled ever since the S-3 landed and was never cleared. What was edited out was the WHY. Paddles kept the Prowler coming in and he didn't get waved off until it was 1 plane length off the ramp. And the BOSS waved him off over the 5MC and the LSO hid the pickle.

  • True, watching the video, you can see in the middle top of the screen a flashing "F", indicating a "Foul Deck"

  • Similar incident: USS Kitty Hawk, in '81, Indian Ocean, during night-ops, a F-14 had landed, but had not cleared the angle deck. Somehow, an A-7 was landing. The F-14 saw the Corsair approaching from behind and both pilot and RIO ejected from deck level & were both successfully recovered alive. Canopy landed on a ABH1 who was working the flight deck, and killed him. The Corsair's landing gear clipped the tail of the Tomcat, throwing shrapnel into other flight deck workers.

  • However, the Corsair powered up & was able to maintain flight. That plane flew for a few hours until sunrise when they could look at the landing gear with binoculars and clear the plane for a landing using the net barrier.

  • I was on the Hawk a couple of years after that happened. I was assigned to V-1 and we still had a few guys who were onboard when it happened. Something I'm glad I didn't witness.

  • This is not the correct film. The A/C was a EA6B Marine Sqd. I was on A/C 111 (F-14) when the plain crashed into us @ 145 mph. I was the only one who lived on 111

  • There are 3 incidents on this video, the second is teh accident from May 25, 1981.

  • I was their too. A horrible night..was just thinking about it today..Veterans day.

  • I saw it happen ,lost some friends that night,Not many days go by that I don't think of it and them.V-1A crash&smash ABN2 R.E.Johnsen RIP RWI

  • We lost several good men that night. I am getting counciling, maybe it would help you with your ghosts from the past. DG
