As a Lapsed Catholic, with all the issues any morally sound person would have with the conduct of the Catholic Church's hierarchy and having seen this debate in it's entirety, I found both Archbishop Onaiyekan's and Ann Widdecombe's arguments both unpersuasive and childish, whereas I saw this as a well argued, fair and impassioned speech.
I especially respect Stephen Fry for distinguishing between the Church's Hierarchy and its largely blameless laity... Something not many others seem to do.

I wish somehow, somewhere, Stephen Fry would start his own religion. It would be a religion of joy, of happiness, of freedom and knowledge, discussion without persecution. There'd be no fear, no lies. Its goal would not be to gain material wealth or power. It's message wouldn't be to follow blindly. No. Its message would be that of love. Love to all others, irrelevant of gender, sexuality or race.
I would join this church. And I know that it, unlike so many others, would be a force for good.

As a Lapsed Catholic, with all the issues any morally sound person would have with the conduct of the Catholic Church's hierarchy and having seen this debate in it's entirety, I found both Archbishop Onaiyekan's and Ann Widdecombe's arguments both unpersuasive and childish, whereas I saw this as a well argued, fair and impassioned speech.
I especially respect Stephen Fry for distinguishing between the Church's Hierarchy and its largely blameless laity... Something not many others seem to do.

You may like meat eaters (I hate vegetarians, but I digress), but Fry clearly hates individual Catholics, which includes his hero, Oscar Wilde, who became Catholic shortly before his death.

no religion is a force for good in the world they all claim to be the only path to heaven, the take money from weakmineded and vunerable people and the all slate other sectors of the comunity that are not associated with. society today would be much more advanced if their were no religion. galileo would have gone on to discover the whole solar system. oscar wilde would have gone on to write some more poems that could today be described as great.

Stephen Fry is not the only denouncer of Catholicism but he is one of the best. I applaud his intense and well angered, well researched and very angry denunciation of the Roman Catholic Church.
Would there were more like him. I will always applaud them.
