Since recently reading the autobiography by Keith Richards, I thought Bo Diddley should be given some research being quoted by Mr Richards as some of inspiration behind the Stones, who I love.
What a treat - the guy is a genius. I've also realised the roots of the sound I love.
I can name 200 other top British Band whose hard rhythm sound and soul can blew the balls right off of the Beatles. The only thing closest to hard and raw the Beatles ever recorded was Helter Skelter.
This guy basically wrote GNR's Mr Brownstone from beyond the grave. He invented the Bo Diddly beat/Shuffle that is the main construct of the song. Slash loves this guy, U can see it in the way he moves.
What an awesome song! Just recently discovered Bo Diddley (thank you Keith Richards) and so far I love everything I hear by the man. I have to buy some of his music.
Great track! I've been aware of this for many years as a Bo fan since 1963. I am very heartened as I trawl through Bo Diddley song channels to see so many appreciative comments on Bo's music from so many young people, teens who have just discovered his music. I can imagine what the thrill of discovering Bo must be like, just like it was for me so many years ago. I never saw Bo perform live but did see the awesome Chuck Berry - those guys plus the great Little Richard ARE rock and roll!
@UKRod Your words on Bo were great! I, too, am so glad many of today's youth have discovered him. I must tell you, as much as you love and appreciate Bo, YOU would have been blown away to see him live! There is or was nobody like him. My wife and I saw him the year before he passed and he blew her away! We saw Little Richard and B.B. King the same year, but Bo was HIS OWN!!!
Rhythm&Blues,Rock'n Roll,Punkrock and electrified Shamanism...all in one Person and his life more than full of it!
this Guy was a major influence in the 20th century for everything, where you can find bluenotes inside...R.I.P.(Rock in Paradise) BO DID IT IN DEED DIDDLEY !

Bo Diddley one of the absolute greatest Rock n Roll pioneers in the USA and beyond. Even the Rolling Stones covered Bo Diddley.......Listen carefully to this song and then immediately go listen to the "Count Five" playing "Psychotic Reaction" and you will see that the Count Five actually covered this song by doing a whacked out rendition of this song in their hit Psychotic Reaction.......Even the drum beat is almost the same....
BO was my friend and I will miss him the rest of my life. Had I been here in Fla, when he passed I would've made that funeral. I booked BO many times in my RADIO DAZE first time was in WELLSVILLE,Ohio in 1958.
@Building529 he's full of mess. it was a used gretch that bo basically gutted and fitted to a few cedar boards he bought himself. bo made his own guitar basically. gretch only came out with a bo commemerative much later on out.
sliding his left hand up and down the neck while stumming, with out really holding down an acutual true fret (except for the response "as in call and response" part he hits chords). then some of it around 1:27 is scrathing his pick up the strings. 1:30 and 2:50 or so he does some hammer like tapping with his left hand. But its all the sound of his set up and his fingers and his soul that makes it Bo Diddley. one of a kind.
This Oreoguru must be a dumbo. All the great musicians were negroes. Little Richard, Fats Domino, Louis Armstrong do I have to continue? Bo Diddley was FANTASTIC and thankgod he was a negro!Music unifieds people and races!
ya'll are just missing the point!!! listen to the music this man can make!!! who cares black, white, pink, purple. that drives raceism. music doesn't care what colour you are! love doesn't care what colour you are!
Unfortunately, this country hasn't made progress further than a foot since 1955. Racism, prejudice, and discrimination are as prevalent as ever, although admittedly perhaps better masked than before.
Appearing on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1955, Mr. Diddley was asked to play Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons" Without telling Mr. Sullivan, he played "Bo Diddley" instead. Afterward, in an off-camera confrontation, Mr. Sullivan told him that he would never work in television again. Mr. Diddley did not play again on a network show for 10 years.
...Sigh...unfortunately,your story is 100% true...often unreported regarding that incident, was that Bo had been booked to play "I'm a Man", which had charted. The Producers requested the change to T.E.Ford's song, saying it was more "appropriate", besides, Bo's deep baritone would be perfect for that song!...not accepting that claptrap, Bo pushed to find out that the Network was nervous about a big,BLACK man on National TV singing "I'm a Man!"...too "Provocative" for 1955 America...disgraceful.
...further to the incident on "Ed Sullivan"...Bo knew there were limitations, how far could he push/protest the Network's decision without destroying his career? He knew that would likely happen if he dropped the "Bomb" of doing "I'm a Man" live on the Show, besides, they might just cut the broadcast off live during the song, but Bo felt it was undignified to give in and do "16 Tons", a song he had no connection to, Bo had his pride. As a compromise, he did "Bo Diddley" without telling anyone.
...Bo had already done the song; "Bo Diddley" months earlier on the Show, so the subsequent anger at his "insubordination" had nothing to do with the lyrical content/latent sexual rhythms of that selection. What set them off into a rage was the realization that the controversial "I'm a Man" could just as easily been performed "Live". They hadn't informed the Director/Tech.Control Booth
Staff about the goings on. Ed called Bo "Boy" & according to Bo, he never got paid the $1,000 appearance fee.
Jimi Hendrix credited many of the Blues/Rock Pioneers for influencing his style/substance. C.Berry taught him that a black/charismatic solo-oriented/singing guitarist could succeed. L.Richard showed that a flamboyant approach to dress/live performance could entrance a crowd, in fact he competed for stage attention with him when in his band. But Bo Diddley influenced his rhythm technique like no other. He credited this "Talking" Guitar routine of Bo's for inspiring his own six-string histrionics.
Thanks for posting this mind-blowing historical video. It helps those of us who are mourning him to celebrate his life and his one-of-a-kind creativity!
Many thanks to Fredvs for posting this, and other videos of the legend, Bo Diddley, who passed away yesterday. Bo's music has enriched my life for half a century.

I booked him MANY times years ago when I was in Radio AND If you ever saw him do that "LEAN FORWARD THING" AS HE PLAYED "YOU" SAW A ROCK&ROLL ORIGINAL.
Most people have never heard Bo play his guitar without singing. He makes sounds that no one else has ever duplicated to this day! Keep in mind that this was recorded almost 50 years ago!!
who was the true contributor of rock and roll, not the king but the one who jump started it chuck berry or bo diddley?
just a thought, any comments fredvs or anyone? just curious, because elvis got so much credit that chuck and bo didnt and then the beatles blew em all away
@Defendor1983 What the fuck are you talking about the Beatles blew who away? Get your GD ears and hearing checked you dope. The Beatles are way too mellow and polished to even touch Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry.
@BBQFanNo1 When the british invasion happen it did take a chunck outta good old rock and roll thats all im saying. bo didley, chuck berry, john lee hooker, otis redding, (and the list goes on) did not get the recongnition they deserved, elvis and the beatles got all the credit
The british invasion and Elvis blew them away in popularity not in their sound, i was just wondering who came first Chuck berry or Bo, because i believe one out of them two was the creator of rock and roll (or a the main contributors i should say) I think the three fathers of rock and roll where Chuck berry, bo didley and Little richard, but i wanted to know what others think. any comments
