I am sure three short sighted people ACCIDENTLY clicked on the thumbs down on this video. Because there is no reason for anyone to dislike this video.
does it matter really if he wa s drunk or not? he was amzing and he didnt waste his life. if he wanted to be drunk who cares. he lived a long life and was one of the best entertainers ever. anyone who says his drinking was an act is clearly trying to put there own morality on him. let it be.
Relax..... Please..... He was a drunk, but not during his shows. He had no problem knocking a few back, but he used that lovable drunk persona to be more popular than teetotaler could have been. You have to be an alcoholic in order to act like one.
It is not generally known that the term "Rat Pack" originated from Lauren Bacall describing her husband Humphrey Bogart and his buddies which included Sinatra. After Bogart's death, Sinatra became the leader of the Rat Pack. Two celebrities who drank night and day were Jackie Gleason and Larry Hagman. Hagman quit drinking instantly after his doctor phoned and told him he only had months to live. Hagman luckily got a liver transplant in 1995 - which some say was because he is a celebrity.
The Bogart - Bacall group was known as the Holmby Hills Rat Pack - the group included Judy Garland and David Niven.
Sinatra was not fond of the name Rat Pack -- when he, Dean and Sammy started working together. They called themselves the Clan -- but due to the KKK implications and Sammy, they dropped the name.
Yeah, I just read more on it. They were also known as the Summit. The Judy Garland version of the origin of the term "Rat Pack" seems more likely than the Bacall version. There were about 26 members of the Rat Pack: H Bogart, L Bacall, J Garland, Lorna Luft, Liza Minelli, Lawford, Sinatra, Niven, Davis Jr, Martin, Bishop, Sid Luft, M Rooney, Swifty Lazar, C Grant, S Tracy, K Hepburn, Jimmy Van Huesen, C Romero, N Fell, M Monroe, J Prowse, S Maclaine, G Cukor, N Benchley, E Flynn. 5 are alive.
that is true. Dean was never drunk on stage. or in concert. Thats just how everybody wanted him to act to be funny. I LOVE DEAN MARTIN. he was SO amazing
The "when you're drinkin', when you're drinkin', the show looks good you" one? It's just a song he did on live shows. It's called 'When You're Drinkin'. But it has the tune from 'When You're Smiling'
Where is this kind of talent today?? Dino was simply superb - a great voice and a great entertainer. Cool and effortless, he shows that true talent never gets old. We miss you, Dino!!
He was never really drunk on stage, all an act hut he was the perfect showman and no doubt gentleman, the likes never to be seen again as the ol rat pack gave the world so much.
This video is great! As I've aged, I can understand why my mother adored Dean Martin so! What a gorgeous voice, what effortless charm, what a beautiful man.
BTW~if you read some of the bios's about him, you know that he was rather straight laced and not really an alcoholic.
The alkie bit was the role he got type-cast into as part of the "Rat Pack" deal. He may have had spells where he drank more than not but his effortless, easy-going & charming swagger was just him!
Dean Martin an honest performer. He never put on any airs. You never knew what to expect from him. He was and is still the greatest all around performer around!!!!
Thanks for posting this it was very well done. I loved it. Dean was awesome the best of the best. Noone will ever be able to take his place in the entertainment field.
Dean Martin was a master of the "drunk act" playing the tipsy but loveable ladies man with an ever present cocktail in his hand. His license plates read "DRUNKY" and he never rehearsed before his variety shows but he was really a disciplined artist who memorized entire scripts - not just his own lines. He could film movies, record hit records, host celebrity roasts, perform live shows, deal cards in a casino, drink with the Rat Pack, and get up the next morning to play golf.
the thing is though, instead of going to have a party or to a bar, or just to have a drink, he would go straight to his hotel room or whatever like after a ratpack performence and have a glass of milk... he really wasn't that much of a drinker, even though he played one really well... but of cource i'm sure he's gotten drunk before...
lets all get drunk

Drunk or not, act or not, the man is/was "elegantly wasted" personified!
Also one of the best 'physical' comedians since the silent era.
