You will love locking the front diff will make all the difference in the world. I can't think of a better way to spend the day. We removed a Ford F 150 with a broken LF control arm and shock from the stream at the Oro Bell mine yesterday. It took 13 hours and two 4x4s strapped together at times to pull the loaded trailer from there to the Crown King general store.
Nice toy you got. Got a couple questions: I'm assuming the chevy trans is for getting a lower crawl ratio-do you need an adapter for the ford v6 for that? Also why not rather invest in lockers w/c I assume has more to offer than a slightly lower crawl ratio and bigger tires combined? Granted you made it up the hill but I think you woulda done better with lockers.
Primay reason for the 700r4 is that the stock auto trans is a weak a4ld. the 700r4 is the 5th trans in the truck (has 380k miles on it as of last weekend).. Its using an adapter kit from Adanced Adapters.
Yes, I was in low range.. I have a chevy 700r4 transmision (3.06:1 first gear) with a torque converter that stalls around 2800 rpms and a very tight fan clutch. The fan tips are also flat (from hitting the shroud when I blew a motor mount years ago) which makes the fan loud (much quieter since I replaced the fan)..

Current truck spec highlights...

4:10 gears
Detroit full locker rear
Modified Duff 3.5" lift
f-250 front shock mounts with 32" long rancho 9000xl's up front
Modified OME-36 rears springs.
