lol......im a longshoreman from Long beach...but im a long way from riding boards down the hill...I use to ride my bike down skyline drive when I was a kid..now at the age of 29...I wouldn't dare to...
He's good from what I hear. He's lived in Hawaii for several years now, surfing a lot and making surfboards now, and always thinking of new and better designs, as usual. I think he is like 60+ years old now, but i guess your not old, unless you feel old (:
Signal Hill can be brutal.. I clocked 45 mph, verified by the chick in the Camaro following me. After 10 clean runs, I changed the grommets, like an idiot I didn't use a hard enough compound.. Speed Wobbled, slid past two houses on my elbows, no safety gear (commando).. end of downhill career! Aargh
@BuzzDyou My uncle (David Dillberg) won this contest in 77' along with Lester. I give those seventies dudes credit, they were the pioneers of the sport. He later went on to design those skateboard shells they had for high speeds, I think his personal best was like 57 mph or something crazy. Cool times.
this is the real deal. they were inventing shit on the spot with crappy gear unlike the stuff we have today. if you don't respect this do us all a favor and stop skateboarding and take up roller blading instead.
no, i think the announcer was just talking about bob, who was the most well known skater as far as i know, mine is actually james dennie who was jimmy silva back then.
he is at 1:48 and i should say red suit, he thinks it's himself due to the stance and suit which he borrowed from another racer. jimmy had just got out of prison at the time and shared a room with that longshoreman.
No disrespect to Team Green--they're all rippers--but did they do it on loose-ball bearing wheels, and on trucks with a 2"-3" hanger, with crappy (by today's standards) bushings? BIG difference between today's equipment and that of 33 years ago. Just sayin'.
Wow. This is awesome film of these Signal Hill Events.
I have 35 mm slides from '78 event [final year] & Akron, OH DERBY DOWNS '78 event also [only year].
Catch the article about Signal Hill events, LA TIMES Sunday Sports, November 18th, 2007 [by Mike Horelick (Tunnel Wheels)], including interview comments from the skatecar racers of the day.
Leslie Jo Ritzma [Drake], captured a Guinness World Record of 51 mph that year in 1977, 1st women to run SH.
I have 8mm of ramp tricks (peralta, logan, etc), and i think there were a few speed trial runs before the rain, it was sat or sunday, can't remember but i'll dig out the film and watch again. i'll post film when i convert it. memories...
Very cool heard about this vid from one of the competitors Tom Kishen on his handsliders. We were tearing up Archibald Ave in Cucamonga then. THANKS!

The roots had some crazy ass people...
I hold more respect for these guys than I do for a lot of modern pros... Not to imply that I have no respect for modern pros...
I just think these guys are way more badass. You couldn't pay me to skate down signal hill.
