This evocation was, so they said on Radio 3, "La Ville Rose", a depiction of the indian city of Jaipur. Re Schmidt, have you heard symphonies 2 and 4? Both brilliant - 1 and 3 are the lesser symphonies - 2 is a romantic extravaganza while 4 looks ahead to more stark, wild sounds - still very beautiful though.
@wolfofthesevern, I fear that you got confused between Florent Schmitt and Franz Schmidt. Both composers are on my Youtube channel but the first one is French and the other one Austrian. Florent Scmitt's musical language is more advanced that Schmidt's and was Ravel's equal before the war. His ambiguous behaviour during the war led the disappereance of his works from the concert halls after WWII. Franz Schmidt is a late romantic composer.
All three Evocations are gorgeous but the one I have posted (No.2) is my favourite. Even in France, these works are very rarely performed.
I do not have "Résurrection" but I have quite a few works from Roussel including a very rare piano concerto. As his concerto cannot match Schmitt's Symphonie Concertante (in my opinion) I have not uploaded it yet.
I have heard four pieces by Schmitt. The Seven Seals, Symphonies #1 and 3, and a chamber work. I often look up pieces that I hear others have enjoyed when their taste is similar. Do you have Roussel Symphony #1 ?
I fear that you are mixing Franz Schmidt (Austrian composer) with Florent Schmitt (French Composer) ! Their styles are radically different but their orchestration skills are stunning. I personally prefer Schmitt whose most famous works are the "Tragédie de Salomé" and the "Psaume XLVII".
I indeed have Roussel's first Symphony. I may post it in the future.
Roussel's Evocations are written in a gorgeous impressionistic style. The second part called "La Ville Rose" full of mystery and exotic harmonies is my favorite.
The most evocative of all with so many atmospheres, so much happening immediately and/or distantly, so many colors; gorgeous indeed!

I have not heard this georgeous piece in over 14 years. Hard to buy in the US. Thanks. Have you uploaded Resurrection ? (Excuse my lack of French).
