you should pick up the POINT-MASTER atari 2600 controller and review it. i have 2 of them, the only difference is that the button is on the joystick, and the controller base is slightly round at the edges. IMO, its better than the the regular 2600 controller. the only down side is that ive heard its not compatible with some games, although it works perfect with all mine. (i have asteroids, space invaders, Pele's soccer, football, breakaway 4, combat, night driver, donkey kong, and freeway)
Just got the Atari 2600 today. Dont have the right outlets cause i got it fomr my graqndma and my great great grandma that lives wiht my grandma has another i might go and get because it has the original controlers 25 ganes and the cables. Sweet sweet victory.
the rubber over the stick on mine always came off and i remember how stiff it was... this comment was not intended as sexual as it sounded when i read it back ...
I had an Atari 800XL but we didn't have a joystick as my father didn't want us playing games. Then, my mother bought one of these joysticks. That was my beggining as a gamer. I am still one.
The joystick tended to fail, the small metal tabs that made the contacts wore off or break after some time under heavy use. They could be somewhat repaired to a semi working state.
@Quartrez ook i did not get that at all. are you one of those people who believes that the ps1 controller ripped off the snes one? if you are than im not gonna bother saying anymore.
@evilgamers1 Woah lol. I'm not saying the ps1 controller ripped off the snes one, I'm just saying it's highly inspired by it. Even SONY says the SNES controller has been one of their lead inspiration for the design of their controller. It has roughly the same feel as an SNES controller, which I love. What I meant is, even though there is no USB SNES controller yet, the PS3 Sixaxis controller is USB, and is as close as it can get to feel like an SNES controller. I'm not hating on anything.
@Quartrez sony admits it? ok good point but you`re wrong on one thing. there is a snes USB joypad if you go on ebay and search for usb joypads you can find snes joypads for sale but yes the sixaxis is similar in feel and is USB
@evilgamers1 Yeah, after I posted my comment I thought that they was probably already snes controllers out there, my bad. But I still prefer the Sixaxis gamepad, be it because of the shoulder buttons that are more responsive than on the SNES controller. At least, that's the case on my controllers.
We had to buy the system 4 times before we got one where the joystick didn't break the first week, and my brother and I weren't even rough with it. They must've gotten tired of us coming back to the store over and over again with broken merchandise. :p
Yes I do like that one better than the others. Except I like to use the joystick with my right hand because I'm right handed...With that one you can only use your left hand with it.
@blacbraun, turning the advantage was a dumb suggestion, try switching your hands, so our right hand uses the joystick, and your left hand controls the buttons.
Fun Fact: the magnavox odyssey was the first video console that plays more than one game and mark has the magnavox odyssey 2, but it was made in 1978 but the oldest console that mark owns is the atari 2600.
Back when you actually got a "joystick" instead of what Nintendo and then every one else suckered people with. Kids of course at the time didn't know better.
@blacbraun, sounds like someone didn't hear of the NES Advantage. You get a very good joystick controller, and it's gigantic, so you can get a hold of it, not like crappy light joysticks with little rubber feet that are "supposed" to work well.
I remember this so much. When this came out, my older brother thought this was AWESOME! In 1985, he thought it was OK, and now he thinks it sucks ass. I grew up with the Atari 2600, and I still think it's awesome, and soon children will be saying: Atari sucks! I'd rather play with my Xbox 5400! And then I'd say: WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT THE ATARI?!
I remember with this controller, the the plastic "dome" inside it, the one that touches the directional contacts, would break if you push on the stick too hard. It was a 4 way D-PAD, and each direction was an on/off contact inside the controller. The contact lines directly connected to the console.
Actually... I'd prefer that controller over the 2600 controller.
Now don't get me wrong, it is a classic and iconic controller, especially for the time. Nowadays though, forget it. The joystick is to stiff, and the firing button is too small.
Even the Odyssey 2 controller is way better, and that system came out just a year later.
This reviewer plays with his thumb on the top of the stick, but I consider that incorrect handling. I prefer to grip the whole stick in my hand for maximum control.
I have one of those. It's one of those mini ones that comes on a key chain. My brother got it for me for Christmas a few years back and haven't played it once

I liked the Atari sticks, but they tended to wear out. The plastic pivot point in the bottom of the case would snap off. Or the ring around the base of the stick insert would crack at the flex points. Also, the bubble switches would move off the contacts and you'd have to peel the plastic layer off and stick them back down with sealing tape.
If you need an Atari stick, buy a Wico controller. Wico made arcade controls and their sticks are built to last.
