Sharp technique, Dont know the gent, never trained with him either. Zanshin is there but the technique looks great at the end but totally lacks in the transition. Most notably in has Shuto's. Speed over technique. In a competition kumite or self defence situation maybe. As for Kata certainly not.
min 0:29 le gambe sono troppo larghe. la larghezza delle gambe dovrebbe essere pari a quella delle spalle. con le gambe così aperte è facile scendere a quella velocità !
Again I say - Just because the judges want it doesn't make it right. Kata now has changed so much - you could not get away with this 5, 10, 15 years ago.
The guy who says he is the best in England might be right but NOT with this kata - look at the third move - in an effort to look quicker he neglects form; thus he performs shikedachi not keibadachi. A wrong move should equal a mark down. His hiza geri are incorrect also - looks like he is on a bike peddling backwards.
So again more marks should be deducted. Now I've not criticised general points because that varies from association, club, etc. But, I think if the country made an effort to stamp out the 'form over function' moves - the way the hand opens in a very drawn out and unnecessary way for example to impress the judges. Or the way slow moves are ridiculously slow and the fast moves skipped over to hide poor technique. But it all starts with the judges - mark poor technique and things will change. Ossu
Nothing at all. But I just want you to know that I'm flattered but we should just stay friends. You have more important things anyway like Call Of Duty 5 and Modern Warfare 2.... are you really 35????
You dont seem to be able to put your point across without swearing, maybe that tells us something about you, in my opinion there is no power at all in this kata , and without generating real power ,it becomes just a performance, not much good when your lying in a hospital bed, get a nice trophy though.
What a load of bollocks! There isn't anyone in England who can perform this Kata better than Mottram. He is the nuts. Strong, technically correct, etc. He knows his stuff. It pisses me off when people criticise through sheer jealousy. He is better than anyone in England - fact.
There are a lot of things about this kata that I don't like, but it's a competition, & this is what the WKF wants, so you can hardly fault someone for trying to please the judges.
I just wish the judges cared a little more about practical karate.
i think al the negative talk is a load of pants. i've trained with Sensei Mottram many times and he is a unique talent. the reason some of you seem to cut him down is beacuse he had to bastardise the kata to make it pretty. he truly understands the bunkai to the kata and he demonstrates it with precision and power and intent, just like my sensei, Sensei Dave Hazard taught me. besides, who here has gotten to the same standard of international competition as mr Mottram? i know i certainly havent!
What people dont understand is that this is Sport Karate not traditional karate. Its called specialising in a specific area. He does his kata this way so that he can score more points with the judges and therefore win the contest.
I have trained with Sensei Mottram a few times and I can tell you now that his lessons are superb and anyone who doubts him seriously does not know what they are on about. You have seen him to 2 mins of Sport Karate and you think you can judge his entire karate?
@BandanaBoy123 I totally agree with you. I have too trained with Jon many times and he is fantastic, the fastest thing I have experienced. His hand speed is phenomenal. I hate it when idiots who dont know anything about karate come on youtube and say, "OOOOH its not traditional, please see Enoeda or Kanazawa or some other ancient teacher". Karate has evolved. Get over it like!
Sorry but you have no idea about traditional shotokan-karate. deep stands and powerfull techniques - these are typical of shotokan and that's what differences it from goju ryu or other styles.
there's a name of the style you see in the video. It's called "sport-karate" or "competition-karate". So many katas of competitors tend to be gorgeous, but also lose effectiveness.
Sorry but in my opinion the kata in this video has no spirit.
I think it is unfair to give minus points to all the people who commented negatively on this video. Everyone is just being honest. Many of the comments have valid points. I think that if you don't like some of the opinions then you shouldn't put up a video that is going to attract criticism.
The stances are good.... these really long very deep stances people seem to think are what you need are incorrect - kiba dachi shouldn't look like you're sitting on a square etc. I think it's started to look like a flexibility contest, not a kata form competition. By the way, on the same line of thought... head kicks - if it is a head kick - are supposed to be to your head height, not that of a 7 foot tall monster.
i agree with DON. His stances are high and a BIG YES to the short movements. Especially his gedan barai. It looks very short cut. He isn't demonstrating proper shotokan technique that is supposed to be pure power. His jump was awesome though, very good balance when he landed. Solid enough that he didnt even shake at all.
What a terrible Empi- this karateka, despite lots of speed and power, can't do Kokutsu-dachi or Kiba-dachi even. And the speed just covers the poor Kihon.
And, the start was poor also. Look at his left leg after finishing first gedan barai to his right side. IT WAS BAD. Kiba Daci was wrong. There was no kime either, but his stances seem to be good. You cannot compare this guy with Valdesi. But, he was good, that's obvious ..
no need for the harsh comment there, it was just an observation. i can see why you would think that. it does seem rather rushed in some places. however, i think we can put it down to the compression tools used by youtube, and the low frame rate, which can not accomodate the speed.
i feel it would be more impressive if we were there. these are the best in the world, ofcourse, and they wouldnt be there if they couldnt do basic kicks properly.
LOL Dan you know thats not true and i think thats why you may have failed. your moves are only slightly incorrect but that isn't why they failed you. you don't have anything behind your moves. you do competition kata instead of traditional. pauses are too long. you have technique but no substance.
Sharp technique, Dont know the gent, never trained with him either. Zanshin is there but the technique looks great at the end but totally lacks in the transition. Most notably in has Shuto's. Speed over technique. In a competition kumite or self defence situation maybe. As for Kata certainly not.

I'd love to see videos of the people criticising. They have no idea what they are talking about. Mottram is so far out of their league it is untrue.

Ele puxa a gedan barai do peito e nao do pescoço...o_O
O kata dele é bom, mas gedan barai é uma defesa tao básica q é até inadimiscível nao executá-la corretamente.
O pulo dele foi simplesmente perfeitoo! \o/
E o ritmo axei rápido.
