Such a poignant and amazing movie. Why cant they make movies like THIS anymore?? no we need more cop dramas or gangster movies. Oh and dont forget all the reality crap we have on TV now. Ugh!!
Watched this with my 16 year old son the other night, he wasn't that interested to start with, things like " Oh no, not another of those old black & white movies you watch dad" he came and sat down and started to watch a bit with me............... stayed until the very end and declared " yeah, that was good dad" i could see it had made an impression on him and the next morning before college he said again "Glad i saw that dad, those old films are much better than i thought" ....... proud of him
What a lovely trailer to my favorite movie of all time! I've seen other trailers using the outstanding Friedhofer music but this is still wonderful and adds a different touch to it. This movie in my opinion the best ever made in film history. Everyone should get a chance to watch it. It's message is timeless. A masterpiece! Thank you for posting this.
@InsanelyINsane Did you ever think of why you were bored? What were your expectations? Did you ever think--maybe you were missing something important that you should learn?
@InsanelyINsane What's the matter with you? Haven't you any heart? I guess you don't have any guts. either. This film wasn't based on hollywood fakery; it was based on real people.
I saw this movie today for the first time and I was so amazed...I was in tears and found it so wonderful, a really great movie :) And your trailer actually made me cry too right this minute because I think it matches so perfectly to the film - a really good job of yours :)
According to Robert Osborne, host of Turner Classic Movies this film is considered by many critics to be the finest movie ever made in any classification. I concur. It captures perfectly what many soldiers and sailors faced adjusting to life back home after the horrors of war. The inclusion of Harold Russell as the true life handicapped vet only adds to the clarity of that difficulty. A truly amazing movie on any level. One of my top 3 of all time. Dana Andrews and March are outstanding !!!!
Why in bloody hell have you included the James Newton Howard music when you could easily have used the recording of the ORIGINAL score by Hugo Friedhofer, which I produced and recorded in 1978.
This is one of the top ten films ever made. It speaks directly to the human heart with all of it's deepest longings and shortcomings. I highly recommend, "The Best Years of Our Lives" to all.
It's late and I probably won't be able to stay awake and watch the whole movie, but let me recommend this superb movie for all. A genuine classic worth taking the time to sit and watch again and again. Three WWII soldiers return to the states and try to regain what the war took away. Make sure you have lots of hankies ready. This is an Academy Award Winner and it gets 10 thumbs up from me.
Hugo Friedhofer's music is fabulous for the montage sequence where the plane takes the GIs home. Wish YouTube had that. Black & White is the best visual medium. With analogue and digital electronic visual mediums lighting is easier & makeup is easier than colour. I've transferred some of my movies to b&w and they look much better.
@Harlan346 Yes it is! Anyone can upload the recording of Hugo Friedhofer's music by contacting me. I produced the only recording of this music. Jslasher.
This is one of the greatest films ever made--and my personal favorite. I'm happy you're developing an appreciation for black & white movies. There is nothing today that holds a candle to them. Actors then had to play tough guys without swearing, love scenes with nudity, actresses were gorgeous without baring their chests...those films were--and still are--classy. And with rare exceptions, today's movies don't even begin to compare.
Perfectly said! It's my personal favorite as well~many of today's movies are just plain trash. Thank goodness for TCM so we can still enjoy these gems commercial free! A movie had to be well written and well acted back then because unlike today, they could not rely on nudity, gore, violence, swearing, and tacky behavior in order to make a buck.
wonderful movie...they dont make them like this anymore...our celeb star base of actors are all 95 % loserswith no talents but shave your head,go into rehab, make a sex tape and marry 4 times...God cannot even help this industry...
@repelghosts Wow you are absolutely right about that! I'm developing a new appreciation for the "black & whites" they had great story lines, "real" actors who could pull off those emotional scenes, they didn't get all graphic with love scenes, they left something to the imagination for goodness sake! Now?...most of it as you have stated is total garbage! nothin but pretty faces, plastic people, no class, no discretion, and people worship them like gods. But they will pay a price for it...
IMO The all time best film. The look on Wilma's face at 2:38 when Homer finally shows affection towards her after being home for a few months gets to me every time see it.
Good one! I share your opinion. As for my favorite part - the ending where Fred and Peggy are ignoring Wilma and Homer's wedding vows and instead are intently focused on one another as Fred walks over to Peggy and proposes to her. What a creative and romantic ending to this movie! You just knew they would be happy together.
@Dana888dana I agree with you, I have this movie on DVD and every time I see that part, the ending..I have to repeat it again and again. When Peggy kiss Fred..look how her big hat falls, and to me it,s a symbol of passion. Nothing matters..only their love. AND...Peggy almost crying, in the wedding, seeing Fred?- this movie is a GEM, to all concerned. Loy, March, Andrews, Wright, O,Donnell, Russell...Wyler..And this is the BEST video I have ever seen about this classic movie!!. Carlos
Fantastic movie. I grew up thinking that all the old WWII movies were the John Wayne guts and glory type (Don't get me wrong, I love John Wayne). Then I discovered this film and was shocked by it's portrayal of the darker realities of war.
Amazing Trailer.

It doesn't matter how many times i watch it .....it still brings tears to my eyes.
A fantastic, uplifting film, that even surpasses 'It's a wonderful life' made in the same year.
