@ jjj, I read that the hand motions and the way he talks out of the side of his mouth were traits of the real Jack Lengyel, which McConaugney picked up to add realism to the movie
Other than the speech in Miracle, this is the best speech in a movie. Gives me chills. Not a big McConahay fan, but this to me by far is his best movie. He was made for this role.
@Helbling21 I just hater hardcore mountaineers fans. because on an occasion last year some were wearing shirts that said marshall will go down like their plane to me that was really offensive and hurtful to those who were there that day that remembered the tragedy or lost someone in it. Also I'm not writing this as a hate comment or a stfu comment. I'm just saying
My most favorite Motivational Speech ever.. To some his is just talking about Football.. But to me he is talking about my LIFE! Use to watch this when I felt like giving up.. when I didn't think I could help my father another day.. when my energy, self esteem, self worth was low.. He said lay your HEART on the line.. and you Can not be Defeated.. and he was right..
You can't appreciate the WIN.. until you have lived through and overcome the DEFEAT!
Mathew McConahay is one of the most honorable people to do this for our marshall community. That speech that he said well never be forgotten forever. He did this for our community and our lives. MARSHALL ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the greatest ever made productions for a lifetime , which gave me the opportunity to cry my ass off , to understand just a little bit about this tragedy . A movie , and a story which I never will forget , as long as I am alive. God bless those who rose from the ashes , and grab glory.
@Mickan1315 You dont get it. The movie is not about how a college football team died in a plane crash. It's about how a community found the strength and desire to rise above a horrible moment in time. To rise from the ashes and stand side by side and help one another to heal and learn once again to put one foot in front of the other. In the end that's all any of us can do in the face of such horror. It's just so very hard to do. This is what the movie is about. Watch it again with this in mind.
I live 13 miles from marshal and remeber the crash of the plane like it was yesterday. I was so glad this film was made. It was so important to the town of huntington to show their spirit.
"Funerals End TODAY." Awesome statement. After nearly a year, the time for GRIEVING the loss of our teammates has passed and the time for HONORING them, as well as ourselves, has come. Now, let's get out there and kick some ass, just as our former teammates would do. Let's go!
@IDawgedu WTF man you itnorant inbreed WVU fan there is a reason the mountaineers have never won a championship and can't keep any good coach. With a fan base like that Everyone in the country should march on Morgantown and burn it to the ground.
Only people who are so critical of this movie are wvu fans. I'm not suprised though...when Bowden left, class left with him, and NC opportunities. Wvu fans hate whenever Marshall gets publicity...and it drives them even more insane to live with Marshall's real-life incident as a story of inspiration and REAL team spirit and city unity.
I grew up in Huntington and graduated from MU. I lived in the area of Spring Hill Cemetery and cannot count the number of times I walked up to the Marshall memorial (shown in this scene) while growing up just to chill and reflect. It was very surreal to see this on the big screen.
I love this movie!!! I live in Huntington and it was so awesome seeing them filming and just having such an amazing movie based on your team. It's hard to believe it happened, but we are still trying to recover from the crash today. This movie portrays our pain and the tragedy perfectly. Inspirational. Epic. Amazing. I cry every time. WE ARE... MARSHALL.
(It does get annoying when you walk through town and everywhere you see We are... Obsentrics! Etc. Hahaha, gotta love Marshall though!!!)
@IDawgedYou I cannot believe what you just said. You are a selfless bitch to say that they are using dead people to make people from money. i really hope that you have a turn around in life or you will have no friends, because no one wants to be friends with a guy who believes a college recruited kids because there students died. that is awful and you are pathetic
@adrenalinerush239 The Marshall "faithful" have been trotting out the deaths of those guys for 4 decades. You even have fans asking for pieces of the plane to keep on their mantel. Now go drink something from under your sink.
@adrenalinerush239 Don't listen to that person. He's clearly a wvu fan from New Jersey, this is coming from a fanbase who approved jerseys made "honoring" the killed coal miners...when in fact it was insulting to their families. This is also the fanbase who chanted Jamie Dixon's dead sister's name at him when they played. While this fanbase wants to tell a story, their fanbase exploits the murders from the greedy coal barons and sell them on jerseys. Go to hell you wvu fan.
@aquaguy322 What's your definition of seriously? Constantly obsessing over it and making sure everyone shares your subjectivity, or making sure everyone realizes how tragic 911 was. Yes, it was unfortunate. In both cases, an insignificant few died. Get over it. There's 7 billion people on this planet, a few thousand doesn't matter for shit.
@44ownzu Actually no...it never really came up until some dipshit named IDawgedYou ran his mouth then you added to it in the same disrespectful context. Tragedy happened at Virginia Tech and Kent State...I know neither personally but I sure as hell know to never open my mouth in objection about it. Some people are far more sensitive about those things than others...it's just more polite to keep your mouth shut than say some things, seriously.
@aquaguy322 It may be more polite, but it doesn't make it any less true. Regardless, i'm stating reason and if you'r offended by reality i could careless. Shit happens all the time, why don't you write a list of grievances. How about Haiti, Japan, Norway, the Crusades, Pompeii? It is insensitive but it is true, and it is not intended to be disrespectful. Now, if it had happened to be i would have a different outlook but it hasn't. Don't personalize it.
@44ownzu Spoken like somebody who has never endured real struggle or tragedy in their life. It's a different story when it's your loved ones lost and not just a statistic you see on the news. It's a true shame that there are people in this world who think the way you do. Who see a bombing in Iraq, a hijacked plane on U.S. soil, or a bus full of kids dead because the driver fell asleep at the wheel as only a statistic in the decrease of surface population. You sound like the Scrooge himself!
Nothing against the speech but Matthew McConaughey does not fit the best description for a motivational coach. Producers should have considered a more inspirational cast member. For instance: a Kurt Russel perhaps
I love the part in this movie where he asks some opposing coach "can we use your game tapes." and against all odds the opposing coach lets them. And he says take as much time as u need. ... pretty crazy
@singapore7773 I will admit that there were some "creative liberties" taken with our story. HOWEVER, the part of the story you are questioning really did happen. Bowden is connected to the Marshall story in more than just that scene. 1. He was offered Tolley's job but took the WVU job instead. He could have been the first time head coach on that plane. 2. Bowden was an assistant at Florida State-where Red Dawsen played college ball.
@singapore7773 You'll notice when Bowden enters the room Red greets him by calling him Coach. 3. Marshall & WVU didn't play at that time. We didn't start playing until 1997 when the Govenor made the two schools come to some kind of aggrement to play. 4. Bowden has said as a member of the Christian Coaches Association (I may not have the name of the organization correct) but, helping Marshall was the right thing to do.
@singapore7773 One last thing. Bowden as NCAA to allow WVU to play Marshall's final game of the 1970 season... wearing Marshall's jersey's. Yeah it sounds far fetched but it really happened that way. The part about WVU wearing the MU and cross on their helmet was true as well.
Kinda shameless to use the dead bodies of six players for your motivation speech....aw look, some of them even walk all over the headstones at the end...
@NeVeRMoRe66 He chose to give the speech there because an important step of a grieving process is acceptance of what happened. Also, by going there, he acknowledged the 1970 team and was able to point out that although none of those players would be there with them on the field that day, they would still be watching....
Even though Marshall isnt doing so hot this season, but I am very happy and glad that they still have a program. That would suck if they ended up not having a program....thundering herd just sounds bad ass.
@brucepemberton they probably disliked it cause this is really sad and how many people like being sad?? but i agree, good..no, GREAT speech/film clip.
this is your opportunity to rise from the ashes and grab glory!
