  • Does anyone if he had his Two Rock in this performance. I know this is a more earlier performance in his career, but he is at the biggest blues festival of all time. I was just curious because his tone sounds amazing.

  • Reminds me of some E. Clapton's rips as well as some other great guitarists!

  • It's the John Mayer Signature fender strat. Google it.

  • @jasonswolpers it cant be this was filmed in 2004 before his signature strat

  • @iamjerseyfresh Good point. I am sure he based it a lot on this one though.

  • It's an older stevie ray vaughan signature strat. He's probably playing 10s.

  • Anyone know what guitar he is playing? or even the type of strings for that amazing sound?

  • @js897 It's his signature strat with blues/jazz strings on it (11 gauge), but I'm not exactly sure what pickups are in the actual guitar he's playing. In the factory produced models of this guitar, the Big Dipper pickups are in it, but I don't think those pickups were produced when Room For Squares hit number one and he went on tour with this guitar. If not the Big Dipper pickups, my guess would be Texas Specials.

  • boner: ACHIEVED.

  • how come I've only seen this video now?!?! this is great!!!

  • Sick break down at 6:10. Its about doing less and good phrasing. Nice!

  • John Mayer is a D-bag... but his tone and soulful playing are still awesome

  • Best guitar intro in the world - to the worst song ever written.

  • Pop the coller so them bitches holler...

  • I could listen to him play the blues all day. He has distilled a sort of SRV Hendrix style into his own thing. Just forget about singing and writing those cheesy pop tunes. like FZ said just Shut UP and Play the Guitar!

  • I hate myself for loving this

  • this guy is pretty gay

  • @donovan3955 Tell that to the countless women he's had in his lap.

  • All the women and some of the men are now pregnant in the audience.......

  • Here's the thing.... John was really high when he got one stage... He started jamming, said "JJ get in on this," then realized, holy shit Clapton asked me to come play my song City Love... I still need to do that, but fuck it, I'm John Mayer... I do what I want! Then City Love.

  • @sparatcusf1 coNteMporanea

  • This video never ceases to give me an erection.

  • it is the first i see a guy play guitar and laugh out...who teached him to do so...or the love made him fool

  • Super tune. Super performance. Great guitar work. This is the piece I will always remember John Mayer by.

  • John mayer with that douchebag swag.. nevertheless, hes a great guitarist. beautiful to listen to

  • this is like watching people have sex in front of thousands of people

  • even while doing his dorky gutar faces he still looks sexy :)

  • this is what hooked me, then the next years performance. now i will defend him till i die.

  • FUCKIN ANIMAL

  • His face a 6:30 lolololololololol

  • John Mayer has one of the worst guitar faces in the biz....and I mean that in a good way. :>)

  • i wish i could play fingerstyle guitar like that

  • very very best..

  • wonder.....

  • You've gotta love it. The guy was gaining popularity through his pop songs, then he comes on stage, plays this, talks shit WHILE playing it. He might as well have just come on stage and said, "look, before I play what all the girls wanna hear, I'm gonna rape your ears with this guitar."

  • god i love this man.

  • LOL AT 2:11

  • this should be no dislikes.

i love his guitar licks,.sometimes simplicity becomes great..

just listen to it..it kinda simple, but it do rocks.

    blues!!

    what an artist..

i love the whole band as well.

    keyboards, ..amazing..

  • DADGBe

  • The central Riff is a little bit inspired of Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix.

  • can't get over the fact that this was 7 years ago! no wonder he's such a beast now..

  • i downloaded this in blu-ray, its just amazing

  • 30 people are deaf, I feel so sorry for them!

  • 1: 04, jj looks like he is in hyperspeed

  • intro is sexy as hell

  • Is this song in D ?

  • @antony5linteau low E string is tuned to D, standard tuning for the rest of the strings... if that helps.

  • @antony5linteau this song in E

  • @55485143 Machine Gun's in E. City Love is in D he tuned to drop D and transposed that bitch down a step.

  • @antony5linteau Yes it is in D

  • What is it about his tone that is so nice? it sounds so damn nice.. so blueeeeeeeeee

  • Who disliked this video? Are ya'll retarded?

  • @JustCallMeHonda nahh man that was Jennifer Anniston, Jessica Simpson, and Taylor Swift all pressing dislike multiple times

  • From 1:26 to 1:32 you can see how he sees that scale in his mind.

    I love this guy!

  • Mayer's peak minus the trio. Inro is phat

  • I like his scrubby "straight from my house" look on stage now. He doesn't give a shit about what people thinks and thats why they call him a douche. WHO CARES. True JM fans come for his music and his open minded jokes, not to judge and try to label. :) So listen.

  • @TheFifthTake ~ Yeah! I was thinking the same thing........very layed back on clothes and well himself....I love the artists that don't let it and money go to their head, when they are layed back, down to earth and can be themselves! .....Just bein them ya know, it makes it more special to know that I can relate! ....Totally agree with you! ......I don't know much about the humorous side though you said his open minded jokes.....Is he funny?

  • @crissie131 Lol, yeah he can be pretty funny. Only open minded people can understand him. Usually people in the media thinks he's just a douche because his way of joking is messing with the media. So he does everything in which the media portray as douchiness on purpose because who wouldn't? I mean if some people with camera's follow me around I'd have my fair share of fun too. xD

  • @TheFifthTake ~ I seen him when he was dating Jennifer Anniston and like Awards and stuff.....he was dressed spiffy there, so it's nice to know they can dress nice for those special occassions too, but yeah other than that layed back totally!

  • @crissie131 Yes, he does dress up for certain occasions. :)

  • Kenny Wayne Shepherd,Joe Bonamassa,John Mayer ... blues is going to live so much more years tnx to you...

  • the good old days when john mayer was cool....and not too cool to be cool. :(

  • I was feelin that intro.popped collar for the win to

  • Is it just me or does he have so much more style than Eric Clapton?

While it might be true he's not SRV it does show he his own unique style out there and he's one hell of an artist.

Most passion you will probably find on pop radio :)

Btw, popped collar for the win!

  • 1:53 ....is he alright? haha

  • What comes out in Mayer's playing is a true love for the music, for the guitar as an instrument. Hendrix had an unparalleled creativity in his guitar and he played with anger and frustration, SRV played with a similar passion and brought a more physical approach to playing the guitar. Mayer doesn't play with the same bleeding emotion, but his guitar playing is beautiful, his creativity is borrowed from a multitude of influences and his passion is in his love for the music.

  • Nice jam. No SRV though, tired of the comparison.

  • John plays with passion like SVR.

  • @sp00ktube stevie vay raughan?

  • @ajfindlater LoL my bad.

  • This guy is definitely deserving of two popped collars. Maybe even more

  • This is sex.

    That is all

  • Double popped collar cool.

  • that jam is insane

  • nice O face mayer

  • didnt know seth rogen played keys for John Mayer!

  • machine gun like intro nicceee

  • he does the double popped collar to be funny. haha its not for real...

  • 2004: John Mayer when he was all about the music and worth nothing to the tabloids. Hope he gets back here soon. By the looks of the giant audience, he was plenty famous and well-off for his MUSIC before he had his name splashed all across page 6 anyway.

The first 4 minutes of this video are awesome, by the way. This video is a favorite of mine for those 4 minutes specifically - it's amazing how he gets into that groove.

  • @alsepang Agree with you man... Those 4 minutes are a serious guitar statement.

  • who gives a fuck what hes wearing, look at him play!!! jesus!

  • lol he's face's xDD!

  • WOW, I totally forgot about the Double popped collar. I bet he regrets that. But the boy can play.

  • FIRE-TRUCKING AMAY ZA ZING!

  • haha eff you all! I LOVE his facial expressions! I'd be making those faces if I could play like that!

  • @atl2maryland John Mayer isnt gay he is known for being a ladies man, WTF?

  • @atl2maryland If gay is what it takes to get with jennifer aniston then why not

  • @RoskillReaper HAHAHAHA you're so right

  • crunchy. real crunchy. F5 to skip commercial ads spread the word!

  • crazy how he has evolved, nice...

  • pop the collar so the biches hollar

  • @Goyel04 LMHO

    (laugh my hat off)

  • @Goyel04 Fucking thats worth TWO popped collars mudda fuckor.

  • @mcgee1516 i totally agree

  • Cool, defo re-working of 'Machine Gun' by Jimi Hendrix. Everyone gets insp from somewhere though.

  • i am glad the popped collar on top of the pop collar didn't catch on.

  • I might say to someone really good at classical, 'wow that's too hard for me.' They might say to me 10 minutes later, 'Man, I wish I could play the blues like you.' So should we both be jealous or both respect?

Jazz Classical Blues Rock R n B Funk Latin and African.. try listening to guitar playres from different styles and genres from all over the world.. it might open your mind up a little bit. And I love blues guitar.. I blend it into all of my playing no matter what style.. but at the end of the day its technically easy. And blues is no exception.. all music requires feel
