@milly3208 -Actually it was Thanksgiving day in 1987 when Flair recaptured the NWA World Title at Starrcade 87. Sadly almost no one saw it on PPV as VKM(McMahon) and the WWF played hardball with cable operators denying them WrestleMania if they ran Starrcade(even though Starrcade Moved to the afternoon) to avoid going head to head with the 1st ever Survivor Series.
This was the match that I remember sitting next to my father watching. The local broadcasts in the Charlotte area would show highlights of this on Sunday morning. We should have been in church. But I think God forgave me for being a fan. Thanks, Dad! :^)
I can not even believe in September this will be 25 years ago. I was a huge Flair mark and still am. I cried that night because Flair lost. i was 10 so cut me some slack. It was the first time I saw wrestling live especially my favorite Ric flair.
Happy to see Ron Garvin get a World Title run even if it was only for two months. You can see how genuinely happy all those other guys were for him. Too bad WWF treated him as a 2nd rate jobber when he went there.
NWA was the shit, until Vince stole all their good wrestlers and got Hulk Hogan from AWA. This was a great match though. Even Stone Cold who used to wrestle as Stunning Steve Austin with long hair came from NWA/AWA and WCCW circuits.
this is the greatest era of pro wrestling. the nwa is the best federation of all time. pure wrassling @ its best. the attitude era of the wwe is a close second.
You can see me and my buddy celebrating at ringside at the 36:25 mark. Too funny. I'm in the white t-shirt, throwing my right arm in the air (at the left side of the frame). My buddy is in the jean jacket on the right. Too funny. I've seen highlights before, but never the entire match -- or OUR clip! Twenty-four years later, I get to see it! Thanks for posting!!!
look ric flair is only 123 years old in this match when he fought hogan it should have been in the nursing home hogans pusshinng 154 years old the worse is they only have like four moves a peace retire flair and hogan before you break your hips brother
Man did that place get loud after the pinfall! Ric Flair held the title over a year up to this point, I want to say! This was why long title reigns were a good thing, when the champ finally lost it was huge. Now when the title changes hands it is like, "Oh, there is a new champion again"
Seemed odd they gave Garvin the title. A few months before this I would of guessed many other wrestlers would of got the title if I knew Ric Flair was going to drop the belt for a few months.
@donaldc5166 They gave Garvin the title for 2 reasons. 1. He was the only one who was willing to drop the title back to Flair 2 months later. 2. All of the other top faces in JCP were pencilled in for programs with others for Starrcade. Dusty was paired with Lex Luger for the US title, Nikita was paired with Terry Taylor to unify the NWA and UWF TV titles, Barry Windham was paired with Dr. Death Steve Williams for the UWF title. Sting, Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin were in a six-man match (cont
@donaldc5166 I guess they wanted Flair to chase the title going into this Starrcade (which was different). I would've like to have seen Dr. Death go up against Flair to unify the NWA World and UWF Universal titles but for reasons known only to those behind the scenes, the UWF Universal title was retired quietly.
When that match took place on World Wide Wrestling, I was 23 years old. I saw the match on local TV and I was rooting for Ron. I will admit that for a 43 minute match, I did not see Ron with any nicksor cuts. I did notice that Ric's long blond hair was obviously soaked with blood. To see Ric straddle the top rope after his head was slammined on top of the cage, all I could say was "Ouch! That had to smart." Ron may have felt the effects of the figure four, but he showed the guts to iwn.
To see Ron Garvin virtually beat the you-know-what out of Flair (Flair got in some shots of his own) and win the world heavyweight title made me one happy fan. I truly was proud to be a Ron Garvin fan, but I do not respect Flair for his dirty tactics at all.
The 10 guys are: Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff, Barry Windham, Ricky Morton, Robert Gibson, Sting, Brad Armstrong, Tim Horner, Michael Hayes, and Shane Douglas. I was so happy Garvin won the NWA World Title, that I went to Chicago by myself to see Starrcade! That started a streak of attending Starrcade 6 years in a row.
@cheneyschernobyl - That is a VERY young Shane Douglas. I don't even remember him in Crockett in '87. I guess it was pre-Dynamic Dudes with Johnny Ace (aka John Laurinaitis...aka Road Warrior Animal's brother).
@palmettoparrots Shane Douglas was in the UWF in '87, then JCP bought them out. During that summer Douglas won the UWF TV Title from Eddie Gilbert (with Sting interfering to help Douglas). Shortly after that, Douglas lost that belt to Terry Taylor. Taylor went on to lose a TV Title Unification match to Nikita Koloff at Starrcade.
I was 10 years old. My mom took me and two of my older brothers to this show. M y first live show we were in row 15. I still have the ticket stubs and 3 mint condition programs.
@leonardweirich I'll never forget it. The first thing we saw when we got down to ringside was david crockett getting set up to announce the match. i got one of those 4 horsemen shirts that said bad to the bone below the pictures of them. my brother got the ric flair shirt that said space mountain on it. my other brother got the war games shirt. I have a whole photo album of pictures my brother took. it was a great card.
I was so heart broken when he beat flair.. Ron had that belt Thur the rest of 87...but flair got it back... Wooooooooooo
