I have used both XP and Vista, XP worked extremely well for me, Vista was just a pretty looking piece of crap for me (I'm a power user), and XP was much more compatible with my stuff, would you recommend upgrading from XP to 7?
I love XP I still run it both 32bit and 64bit for my video editing. ITs the best OS I have seen by MS.. Vista is to bloated. People run server grade systems to get performance out of it.. Very sad.
I would say do dual boot until you know it does everything your XP will handle.
Thanks Mix !! You can tell within one second how genuine you are of a person :) I do use Vista for all my graphic work and its been solid..BUT..i have a fast PC. So I cant wait to see 7 on a moderate laptop.
If its quick people like me will be able to run photoshop on a 599.00 dollar laptop smoothly.
Of course Photoshop CS4 is out and its got bugs and more bugs..hahahaha so I will be waiting patiently until spring for all to smooth out.
Thanks for the kind words.. I know what you mean with photoshop. Honestly I run XP 64 bit on a very fast desktop for the performance. Vista is nice but not all my apps work right on vista. I run all types of marketing programs, networking tools and the security layer drives me bonkers. LOL
Pinnacle has always given me problems, some of the older ver. were just nasty for crashing. Have you installed the new window movie maker on that? It's ok for making quick YT video's
Vista Sp2 is more reliable that WIndows I have never seen a new release of an OS that didn't come with bugs. Win 7 will have less bugs than Vista during its introduction, but it will still have them and a lot more than in Vista SP2.
Btw, 7 is basically Vista with a new lick of paint, for the same reason XP was 2K with a new fancy look.
Can you turn all the eye candy off? I like the old Windows ME/2000/98/95 GUI rather than the transparencies and other visual effects. It just hogs too much resources from the PC. I'm using Vista H.P. with 2GB RAM, 1.8 GHZ CPU, and nVidia 7150M. I'm hoping i get better performance out of 7 compared to Vista.
ive run 98/XP my whole life and i tried vista for almost a week before i had to switch back, is Windows 7 really BETTER than XP ? or is it just a better version of Vista ?
Hey man I am frustrated withe the Network card driver for win 7 that I newly installed. Loved the video! Windows 7 is sure to be a good competitor to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Also, Windows 7 looks more stable and somewhat more elegant than Vista. Can't wait to get it on October 22, 2009!!!

Nice video. I guess you are going to move over to WIndows7 when it comes out? I've been using a laptop quite similar your Sony's VAIO it's one of these Aluminum unibody MacBooks which run great. I tried to run Vista on it with Bootcamp which turned out better then my desktop. But nothing can beat Windows XP on it with Bootcamp. So while Vista looks great I am holding out for Windows 7 and will definitely get it on my system for compatibility reasons next to (Snow) Leopard. Do use Linux as well.
hey for ur video editing u should trying running the program installer in compatability mode. just right click the installer and click troubleshoot compatability, thengo through the steps. it helped me a lot with some programs i had trouble running
You're very right about video editing: not the smoothest experience with video editing under Windows 7 yet. I used Premiere with Windows 7, and it was very buggy and slow. But aside from that it's great... BTW I've switched back to Vista because of the problems with video editing.
I used build 7000(the first public beta) 32 bit(could have had 64 bit, but I've had some bad experiences with 64 bit OSes.) and loved it... the taskbar is great. Can't wait for the release of 7... And you're right about vista... but it's better now. MS has gotten alot of the kinks out by now, and developers are making drivers for vista now... but still 7 is far superior.
Vista is a pretty Dead OS people dont like it and most dont run it. MS thought it would have caught on like wild fire and that wasnt the case do to all the issues. This will be the next Windows XP.
Awesome review man. But the best part of windows 7 will be embedded in its last build i.e. multi touch interface. I have been using Windows 7 RC 1 and i have liked it and have seen people using the touch in it. But they are restricted to single touch. Basically ur review is nice but all i m saying is that this is the first time MS has come upto my expectations with Windows 7.
Thanks for the post.. The Touch feature is pretty neat.. My laptop dont have that ELO touch screen or I would have tried that out. It looks pretty nice. I dont have use for touch with my business.
Yea pretty good video.I'm waiting till the final release to get windows 7. I would've liked to try it but the partitioning program in vista thinks that i don't have any space to partition when i have a hell of a lot of space. And i'm not planning on removing my system files temporarily so that it can see the space just to dual boot vista and window 7 RC1.
Thanks.. Yeah it was $1200 but was marked down to $850 at office deptop about just shy of 2 years ago. I got the floor model and they ended up giving it to me for $650 so I thought I got a pretty good deal on it. The Vista was nice looking but most of my networking apps ran bad. It was night and day difference when I put XP on it. Ran like a top. With the Windows 7 now it runs just as fast and im really enjoying all the features.
Great review, Mix! But, can I print an envelope??? without it all going weird all over my but and making me agitated? Also, can you type in mutliple opened windows without having to keep minimizing and deminimizing a pop-up windows? Those of us with horrific memories of Vista post-traumatic-OS-syndrome need reassurance before we give up old reliable XP. Thanks for that review, bro!
LOL Man.. When I got my Sony laptop it came with Vista Ultimate.. All the bells and whistles. I was sooo frustrated by it. Not running like it should and have my apps would act odd. I put good ole XP back on and it ran almost twice as fast. Well They sent me this to beta test and I love it. Its as fast as XP and everything works so far. It will be a great product when its finished.
I've been testing Windows 7 since the beta came out and in my honest opinion the beta was better than Vista. I just downloaded and installed Windows 7 RC1 on Tuesday and so far the only issue I had was a driver issue with my ATI HD 4670 video card. The next day they released an updated driver and the problems are gone now.
It will take a little work to learn where things have been moved to, but I think it is a step in the right direction.
I did notice that Windows 7 is almost an exact clone of Kubuntu Linux 9.04. However Kubuntu is far superior in the fact that you can read NTFS, FAT32, FATX, HFS, HFS+ formatted hard drives.
It also uses a windows emulator called WINE that is pre-installed. Applications install and run just like in windows. Plus it comes with free OpenOffice apps.
Kubuntu handles memory more efficiently and has more eye-candy GUI widgets than Mac OSX.
I like linux a lot. The problem with wine is not all apps will run with it.
For all around desktops and laptops Windows 7 will be the way to go. I run Linux on all my web servers. It is way more secure and stable. Great comments my friend.
I'm currently running Ubuntu on this computer but my new one downstairs will be running both systems so I can still play my favourite games in windows. Great review. *****
Agreed, I run a computer repair shop and every other day someone walks in and says please take off Vista and put on XP on my laptop. When they get it back they are so pleased with the performance.
I would have thought Microsoft would have learned their lesson after the Windows Millennium failure, but I guess not.
I've removed Vista from my main computer and now I'm running Windows 7 RC1 instead. It is pretty sad that I trust an unreleased operating system over using Vista.
So far so good, and they have done a great job of revamping memory allocation.
Hint: If you have 4GB or more memory, disable virtual memory and plug-in a 4GB or higher USB drive using Readyboost. BIGTIME BOOST!
Agreed. Yeah using the memory stick is a great idea. I have used a couple apps that work with XP to use the memory sticks but I didnt notice much.. It was more problems then it was worth. I will have to pop in a big USB and allocate it and run video editing and see what it does.
I installed it about a month or two ago. Its basically vista with all vista's service packs - it even uses vista drivers.
I am probably the only person who thinks vista is better than XP. If your computer is built right, vista will perform better (Im running 6GB DDR2 with 2x640GB HDD w/32mb cache each in RAID 0 on a 3.0Ghz Dual core, 8800GT)
It runs fast than XP which is dual booted.
My laptop will stay XP, it is what it was designed for. I am going to install the new release of 7 tomorrow
Yeah Im a network engineer and server administrator. Vista dont cut it for me. I also do video editing and graphics and its slow! I have XP 64 bit on my beast box at home its loaded with ram and needed the 64 bit to see it all. That runs way better.
You shouldnt need all this hardware to make Vista run OK. It was way to top heavy and they never addressed all there issues. ITs almost usable but to bloated.
Thanks for your comments and letting us know what you see.
Fresh installs of both vista and windows 7 use the same resources for me. I think the difference is computers have caught up with memory and dual/quad core processors.
I have run them side by side and tested all aspects of them and have found Windows 7 to use less resources and perform faster then Vista. Maybe you had an old build? The boot time is soooo much faster too.
Windows 7 core is not Vista. Its been re-written. Its much lighter. The networking is all reworked nicely. I will look at Snow Leopard also when thats avail.
still in XP SP2, had issues with SP3 with the 2200BG wireless argh... never tried vista because i know my laptop can't handle it but will see if Win 7 would run :) I wish MS has bootup Windows to try it out before installing it
not sure if I'm going to keep windows on my machine I might switch to Kubuntu or Fedora
Well a nice way to test it. Make a ghost image of your hard drive so if it dont work out you can put back your XP image. I love XP SP2 it works very well and its quick. There is no reason why Vista was so top heavy. Window 7 is Very quick and you will see it run as fast as XP if not even faster.
Windows 7 is simply the best, and very fast!!!.

And generally 7 is a lot better than vista or any other OS. 7 is an epic win from microsoft!

Do use Linux as well.
markvergeer 2 years ago
Thanks for your comment and well said. windows XP runs great and vista is pretty but just not stable enough. Its thick and top heavy.
I wish my Viao had an aluminum case! That would have held up better. but I do use the junk out of it.
Take care,

You're very right about video editing: not the smoothest experience with video editing under Windows 7 yet. I used Premiere with Windows 7, and it was very buggy and slow. But aside from that it's great... BTW I've switched back to Vista because of the problems with video editing.
incrediblebob 2 years ago
Wow thanks for the post! What version on 7 did you use?
Yeah Im using XP Pro 64 bit on my workstation for video editing.
-Pete
mixcatcom 2 years ago
I used build 7000(the first public beta) 32 bit(could have had 64 bit, but I've had some bad experiences with 64 bit OSes.) and loved it... the taskbar is great. Can't wait for the release of 7... And you're right about vista... but it's better now. MS has gotten alot of the kinks out by now, and developers are making drivers for vista now... but still 7 is far superior.
incrediblebob 2 years ago
I agree.. also pulling my hair out on 64 bit OS's Just silly we cant use more the 4 gigs of ram on a 32 bit OS
And vista is a lot better but still to top heavy.
Thanks for your post! Lots more to come.

Why have you said: "Vista Killer" ?!
It's the next OS after Vista, so obviously it's going to take Vista's place as the flagship Windows OS.
windowspczone 2 years ago
Vista is a pretty Dead OS people dont like it and most dont run it. MS thought it would have caught on like wild fire and that wasnt the case do to all the issues. This will be the next Windows XP.
Thanks for your comments.

Its looking great so far.

Nice Review GJ
That laptop came with Vista Ultimate? Was it pretty expensive when u buyed it?
nintendowiids12 2 years ago

Pete-
I dont know much about computers so sorry for my lack of knowledge here. :o)
I had to buy a new computer tonight and all i could get was vista with SP1.
Is vista really that bad?
I got a dell inspiron with 2GB ram. Seems like it runs faster than my old xp.
I've just heard neg stuff about vista and hope I didnt get screwed.
i dont do a lot of fancy stuff. No networks or anything. Just your basic home user for the most part.
scutter4christ 2 years ago
Well Microsoft will not be supporting Vista soon as they view it as a failed product.
Honestly you can install XP on it.
Download all the drivers from the Dell site and I will mail you a restore CD for that Dell XP pro.
Or you can try your luck with Vista and see how it goes. ;o)
If you run into problems let me know. I will give ya a hand.

Vista not so much.

HHO4ALL 2 years ago
I did notice that Windows 7 is almost an exact clone of Kubuntu Linux 9.04. However Kubuntu is far superior in the fact that you can read NTFS, FAT32, FATX, HFS, HFS+ formatted hard drives.
It also uses a windows emulator called WINE that is pre-installed. Applications install and run just like in windows. Plus it comes with free OpenOffice apps.
Kubuntu handles memory more efficiently and has more eye-candy GUI widgets than Mac OSX.
It is worth trying out.
The download is less than 700MB.
HHO4ALL 2 years ago
I like linux a lot. The problem with wine is not all apps will run with it.
For all around desktops and laptops Windows 7 will be the way to go. I run Linux on all my web servers. It is way more secure and stable. Great comments my friend.

I'm currently running Ubuntu on this computer but my new one downstairs will be running both systems so I can still play my favourite games in windows. Great review. *****

Agreed, I run a computer repair shop and every other day someone walks in and says please take off Vista and put on XP on my laptop. When they get it back they are so pleased with the performance.
Vista was a total failure in my view.
-Pete
mixcatcom 2 years ago
I would have thought Microsoft would have learned their lesson after the Windows Millennium failure, but I guess not.
I've removed Vista from my main computer and now I'm running Windows 7 RC1 instead. It is pretty sad that I trust an unreleased operating system over using Vista.
So far so good, and they have done a great job of revamping memory allocation.
Hint: If you have 4GB or more memory, disable virtual memory and plug-in a 4GB or higher USB drive using Readyboost. BIGTIME BOOST!
HHO4ALL 2 years ago
Agreed. Yeah using the memory stick is a great idea. I have used a couple apps that work with XP to use the memory sticks but I didnt notice much.. It was more problems then it was worth. I will have to pop in a big USB and allocate it and run video editing and see what it does.
Super post. Hope you have a great weekend,
-Pete
mixcatcom 2 years ago
Actually I was referring to using the USB drive with Readyboost on Windows 7.
They really ironed out the readyboost feature, and now it is a must have.
XP didn't support it properly, Vista did okay, but Windows 7 finally got it right.
HHO4ALL 2 years ago
I installed it about a month or two ago. Its basically vista with all vista's service packs - it even uses vista drivers.
I am probably the only person who thinks vista is better than XP. If your computer is built right, vista will perform better (Im running 6GB DDR2 with 2x640GB HDD w/32mb cache each in RAID 0 on a 3.0Ghz Dual core, 8800GT)
It runs fast than XP which is dual booted.
My laptop will stay XP, it is what it was designed for. I am going to install the new release of 7 tomorrow
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
Yeah Im a network engineer and server administrator. Vista dont cut it for me. I also do video editing and graphics and its slow! I have XP 64 bit on my beast box at home its loaded with ram and needed the 64 bit to see it all. That runs way better.
You shouldnt need all this hardware to make Vista run OK. It was way to top heavy and they never addressed all there issues. ITs almost usable but to bloated.
Thanks for your comments and letting us know what you see.
-Pete
mixcatcom 2 years ago
Fresh installs of both vista and windows 7 use the same resources for me. I think the difference is computers have caught up with memory and dual/quad core processors.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
I have run them side by side and tested all aspects of them and have found Windows 7 to use less resources and perform faster then Vista. Maybe you had an old build? The boot time is soooo much faster too.

Snow leopard is coming soon.. but in reading up on windows 7 and Leopard.. I think the comparison goes as follows:
Vista is the same as windows 7, same drivers, same core, same look. new features and bug fixes..
Leopard is the same as snow leopard, same everything as well, new features. Bug fixes
Lol, in the corner of my eye, my desktop just BSOD'D ... I dont think windows7 enjoys my TV tuner card :(
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
I mean this as in they aren't whole new worlds.. like moving from XP to Vista or windows ME to XP where you need to check drivers etc..
or OS9 to OSX
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
Windows 7 core is not Vista. Its been re-written. Its much lighter. The networking is all reworked nicely. I will look at Snow Leopard also when thats avail.
Thanks for the comments.

still in XP SP2, had issues with SP3 with the 2200BG wireless argh... never tried vista because i know my laptop can't handle it but will see if Win 7 would run :) I wish MS has bootup Windows to try it out before installing it
not sure if I'm going to keep windows on my machine I might switch to Kubuntu or Fedora
ZankDigiTrash 2 years ago
Well a nice way to test it. Make a ghost image of your hard drive so if it dont work out you can put back your XP image. I love XP SP2 it works very well and its quick. There is no reason why Vista was so top heavy. Window 7 is Very quick and you will see it run as fast as XP if not even faster.
