  • @haltoloverxxx are you sure? i live in the civilized part of the United States, and people sure do act like rats.

  • @hatloverxxx

People in the "civilized" world do act like rats. From the US in the Philippines to Iraq, from Western-educated "leaders" in Liberia to concentration "asylym seekers' centers" in southern Italy and eastern Greece. From Oakland to London through Cairo. The only thing specific about the "Serb nationalist cult" post-Communism is the name. The ideology is the same everywhere - Jobbik, HSP, Gingrich, Le Pen. the Muslim Brotherhood, Vishva Hindu Pariṣad..

  • the ontology of killing: a very smart way to describe how the torture of a "tribe" can provoke "blind" aggression. you imprinson them, let them die of hunger, take their eyesight and afterwards let them free...so you can enjoy the game of disorientation and the pure nature of prime instinct. a cruel and kinky way of symbolism but it works.

  • @soschwerzufinden It describes the new Serb nationalist cult, post-Communism

  • (after being starved and having his eyes poked out) ....."now, the rat is nervous....."

  • I'm in THAT part of YouTube again...

  • The video is talking about the political situation in balkan in the 90s. It's a word play; "rat" means "war" in Serbian; she is talking about why people were killing each other in the war.

  • @PigeonMal Great insight

  • This is brilliant! If we are "wild" in the Balkans, as the media said in 1999, let us show you exactly what wild is. What eugenics and Social Darwinism are (what Marina describes here - both are certainly not Balkan inventions). How capitalism works. How individuality works. What you are afraid of, Eumerica, what you project on us, is are fears about your own society. What Marina says here, I think, is that we are all both rats and people at the same time.

  • @jovanovm fag.

  • @jovanovm People in the civilised world don't act like rats.

  • jebem ti mater!

  • wtf?

  • This is about how a crazy bitch kills rats. Dont pay attention to her.

  • In the America of U.S .we kill rats and have them for lunch.

  • in soviet russia, however, rat's eyeballs pluck out YUR knaife.

  • I just... I... what.

  • :| just made me feel bad

  • This is crap. Not even remotely art.

  • @smpblogger And art is?

  • @Indianielsen something that is so utterly inexpressible through any other means than the exact time and medium the artist chooses. and because of that, in a word, it's moving. this is doesn't feel like that. nor does it feel funny in a flippant, glib, throwaway fashion. rather it just feels like something one endures on a first date with a poet.

  • Can someone explain this to me?

  • lmfao this is so true. and i'm albanian. it's not literally about rats geniuses.

  • EPIC TRAGEDY OF THE RAT FAMILY until....

    1:33 uplifting ethnic music

  • *fucking

  • I really like this, and I love Marina's work.

Anyone who says this is shit is a ducking dumbass who obviously can't appreciate art.

  • disgusting serbian trash

  • so its okay to kill animals in the most sick and gruesome way possible in the name of culture?

  • shes exploiting her origins in quite a non creative way, all of this "in Balkans we this, and that" is like if a person from California said "...we in California treat stupidity with medicinal marijuana" or "we in new york exploit our cultural heritage when ever in need of fast publicity stunt " ...now that's creative

Art my ass, she does not have a F* clue of what shes doing xD

  • I want to kill her !!!!

  • @BesomarSRB Why?

  • @Zalogare i'm serb and her talking shit about as...we are not like this...u must understand...and this is not art

  • I think I've just been trolled hard.

  • >my face when not even serbian song at the end

  • art is stupid

  • HAHHAHAHAHAH XD XD XD SUTPID SERBITCHES

  • @K1ALBOGANGSTA errrmmm....

  • @freakonly4u aha

  • i like to tell you a story...how we in Turkey kill the rats...we are going to a shop and buying rat poison.after the rats are poisoned they are trembling and dying.(now im taking my underwear off and begin to dance

  • There are primitive people everywhere and generations before were primitive in general but I didn't hear about this crap people in Balcan did. This woman is big lie seller, so called fog seller. She is .!. in her mind.

  • @MrZagubica I think you've got the whole thing a bit wrong :P she isn't actually claiming that people do this to rats in Balkan. She's making a political statement to say the least, and I think her interpretation of how everything came about to go shit in yugoslavia is basically put into a concise and truthful story (or well...as truthful as a metaphor of this kind can become).

Personally I think Marina is wonderful :) Hope you learn to appreciate her art as well :)

  • it's so sad how people like Marina are sending a wrong picture to the world about Balkan, art, etc. she is hiding behind so-called art of hers so she could make money and manipulate with people's emotions and future opinions within a very sensitive subject! she sickens me!!!

  • KILL....KENNEDY....KILL...KENNEDY...

  • Wa the hell!...Thats just bloody cruel!!

  • thumbs up if this woman made you never want to visit the balkans.

  • @Milkyiscolossal

yeah, we have cool accents though, cannot be denied.

  • that would make a good video game.

  • What is this I don't even

  • what the fuck just happened in the end.

  • and what did these fuckers get by torturing rats?

  • i dont think this is where i parked my car lol

  • this is not about rats, is it?

  • @phlexonance

    amazingly enough...

it REALLY DOES have to do with garbage.

  • "rats like to kill shit"...Annnnnd "SEXY TIME!"

  • what she said is so true

  • @msbrainz

sorry, not only for the balkans

  • her Rhythm0 from 1974 is the most amazing piece of performance art ever.

  • looool

  • Lets do it with you and your group that does these retarded experiments aka ''art''

  • @Laszczka

someone allready did that with ppl in balkan.

  • what a tart!

  • Modern "art"=garbage.

  • @xxdiogenescynicxx hahah good point.

  • YOu can say that its crazy, but if you say that this is just garbage then just please, please don't ever ever eeeeeeever think about trying to understand art, because you'r just a poor ignorant...

  • @colfr10,go suck an egg,this is GGGGGAAAARRRBBBBAAAAGGGGEEEE

  • @colfr10 If you provide me an explanation how this is art, ill respect your opinion. Explain how is this art? Is this little made up false story she made up art? Is her dance at the end art? If so, what does that dance represent? What does the music represent? Does the video have deeper meaning than it would appear after you watch it for the first time? If so, what is that meaning? Please explain. I've asked this many "art experts", and nobody gave me a single answer except "you dont get it".

  • @derbigpr500 - I don't know who you asked about this piece, but I think its a silly answer if they just said "you don't get it." Because art isn't properly taught in school, understanding art since modernism is frustrating w/o going to art school. I hadn't seen this piece before, so what I did was just research it on my own. Keep in mind it's only a clip from a movie as well. Here's blog post speaking about it if that helps>reflectupon.blogspot.com/2007/12/how-we-in-balkans-kill-rats.html

  • @derbigpr500

i would like to say something about this, to help you understand this short monologue of Marinas(it's only my interpretation nad opinion, so i dont claim its 100% right):

as a young man who is raised on the balkan area, i can see a strong metaphore of historical acts of balkan people, mainly slavic cultural group,.

it is all about civil war and suffering of one, same people, ex-yugoslavs

who were so blinded by the false light of great world forces, mainly america.

  • @crklaksendza

basicly, its complicated and it's political propaganda, so take a book of the modern history,

lets say from 19th century, read it, and it's going to open your eyes...

this is not abstract, it's just a story with rats, and the rats are yugoslavs, the rat-catcher politicians,

the cage is balkan area, so... very political, hardcore satirical....

  • @crklaksendza I FUCKING KNEW IT!! I know loads of Slavic people who came to Sweden (my country) just because of the war. I've heard their stories. I feel their pain.

  • THAT IS PRETTY FUCKED UP!!!!!

  • her pronounce of english is awful

  • @neuronespecchio

    and your grammar is appalling.

  • @GeneralFstck

    i'm not english,but italian.

    hey,you're very very kind,dear man,o girl

  • @GeneralFstck

    anyway,i love mrs.abramovic's works...and courage

  • Wow!

  • yes we balkans are ferocious ppl. and marina abramovic is the cultivated balkan who escaped balkan misery and came to the west to tell stories and cry about the situation in the balkans. go pee, that's what i say

  • @glglg251 symfono mazi s

  • Call it what you like, this is a ridiculous thing to behold.

  • The dance and the Romanian music in the end really give it a "Balkan atmosphere".

  • Nice work. Thanks.

  • dramatic

  • @MysticalBaby I was at the exhibit also, there were a lot of warnings by the entrance. I dont believe in judgment so im not gonna give you one, all i can tell you is that art is completely subjective, thats why there are so many definitions of it. The point of the two nude persons standing at the back "door way" was to make you feel something. The point of art is feeling, tell me did you feel something other than embarrassment? Dont judge what you can not understand!

  • Your looking for a deep meaning in something that had no deep meaning to begin with. Marina Abramović = the Troll of the art industry.

  • @ladygodia Exactly she sucks. Modern art shouldn't even be classified as art, it is garbage.

  • @xxdiogenescynicxx I suggest you try to make something better and show it to us. She's great and her 'The Artist is Present' is a very good work of her. You think she would've come as far as she did, making garbage? Stop crying over how you dislike it, and start working on something you think is worth seeing more, I wish you good luck. Marina is great, and so is modern art! Did you know this isn't even modern art, but performance art? Now go learn your art history. Kthnxbye.

  • @Wynter192 in your opinion , how is this art?

  • @Wynter192

This is a massive load of shit.

  • @Wynter192

    >>You think she would've come as far as she did, making garbage?

the staying power of garbage in cinema is incredible. so... YES, I DO THINK SHE WOULD HAVE MADE IT THIS FAR MAKING GARBAGE!!

  • @alphafactor And you think this is cinema...do you? Interesting assessment.

  • @Wynter192

how the FUCK is nonsense speech art? I guess that means Hitlers speeches were art right?

  • @10lettername You fail logic forever.

  • @xxdiogenescynicxx I clarify to you honey (cause it seems quite well that you don't know enything about art, I study art history and its complex, you cant learn art history in a Gombrich book and voila tout!) that MODERN ART is art going from de beginning of the XX century to the Expressionnisme Abstrait of Pollock, de Koonning, Rothko bla bla, from that time on, meaning 60s is considered contemporary art, and thus Picasso is not considered to be influential in this nouvelle periode d'art...

  • I honestly thought I was done with this hack... but you people can't seem to understand not everyone likes what you like and can't just move on with making your moronic remarks to all my comments. None of you have yet to answer my original post as to what is so artistic about her. Instead you just make these lame ass insults. Your just further proving my point there is nothing artistic about her for you to explain.

  • She's from the Balkans. Do you really think she's talking about four-legged rats?

  • @khamsin59 who cares. This b*tch isn't Edgar Allen Poe and she doesn't even know what imagery is. That's why this crap makes no sense. What more could we expect from this talentless hack. "This is how we kill rats in Balkan" no "this is how we waste people time" should be the title of this piece. Hey I'm out of sh*tty stories to tell watch me dance horribly now yaay a red scarf.

  • Marina Abramović is the definition of PRETENTIOUS!

  • @ladygodia Ok, I think someone's jealous. Otherwise you wouldn't even pay attention to Marina or any of her work.

  • @put1t1nh I don't pay attention to this fraud. I saw one of her lame "art" videos or whatever made a comment long ago then get criticized for not liking this crap. You people are out your damn minds your as loony as this chick is. This isn't art this a bunch of bullsh*t pretending to be art.

  • @ladygodia I don't think she qualifies as a fraud. By definition, anything that allows you to express yourself in a stylistic matter is art. It doesn't need to make sense. Actually, some people prefer art that's abstract or nonsensical. Fraudulent artists are those who claim someone else creation as their own. You can still dislike what Marina does, but you can't deny the fact that it's art nonetheless.

  • @ladygodia

    why?

  • What the hell is this crap?

  • @ladygodia I hate it when I see fellow Americans display their ignorance to the world. If you want to know, ask politely. If you don't want to know, just shut up and walk away. Have a little self-respect, please.

  • @put1t1nh how do you know what country I'm from or what my nationality is? and

    2. crap is universal. It doesn't matter what country or what nationality the foul mess comes from it still smell like CRAP!. There's nothing artistic about some woman standing around telling a story that makes no sense (not even metaphorically) then dances around with a ribbon. No my friend this isn't art this is bullsh*t.

  • @ladygodia If you removed your head from your ass, everything you see might not smell like crap.

  • @khamsin59 "if you removed your head from you anus everything you "see" might not "smell" like crap... hmm tell me what's wrong with that sentence of yours? I didn't know human beings can now smell with their eyes! Behold evolution is at work! Sorry your offended by people who can sense and admire the talent of true artist. This fraud isn't one of them. Just pretentious garbage, what's so deep about her story of killing rats? spoiler alert...the rats = people holy crap she M. Night Shyamalan me!

  • @ladygodia i will say once again that art is subjective, as i said to another girl one minute ago, whats the point of judging? Marina made her point when she made you furious, the point of this videos, exhibits, etc is to make you feel something, me personally makes me histerical, that doesnt mean that i have to judge someones honest work.

  • @lorelaipena she never made me furious just curious as to how she considers herself an artist with this talentless trash. I don't think the point of her pretentious work is to make people feel like she is wasting their time and money. I've seen more talented acts at the subway station (seriously). People don't understand Picasso but at least his art work took him years to craft. His paintings stand for something and have a many interpretations. That is true art. This...is trash.

  • @ladygodia why doesn't this stand for something?

  • @IskArioT27 You just can't see it!!! Contempporary art gets away form traditional art, form its sculpoture and the paintings that are so related to la bourgeoisie!!! From the 60s appears the Nouveau Realisme, Pop art in the US, Minimalisme and then appears Happenings and Performances! You must learn a lot of things! This is performance, this period of time gets aways form esthetic concepts, its not looking for beauty. it represents the art object, the body es a medium, experimental music....

  • @ladygodia I think to understand why what she does is considered art you need to take into acount that the most influential artist of the 20th century is not Picasso but Duchamp, at least to the contemporary art world. Mabey if you look into his work than this peice will fit into place in the contemporarly art world.

  • @almanacofsleep that is of course assuming your not familar with Duchamp, you could already have a great grasp of modern art and just think she's shit. At the risk of sounding like a cop-out, art is subjective, to each his own blah blah blah.

  • @put1t1nh you want theatrics watch a play, you want to see art go look at a sculpture or a painting, you want to see live art watch acrobatics, you want to see half assessed bullsh*t watch this talentless garbage. It's not called "ignorance" it's called having taste. This garbage is an insult to real artist that work hard perfecting their talents so that one day it will be recognized. There's nothing talented about this woman. She's a hack making money of of idiots like you.

  • @put1t1nh PS. you want to see an artistic piece about the cruelty of the world go watch Unit 731.

  • well ,the title is supposed to be shocking and the story too but that don't add any value to them .this is just a childish thought in an unadapted ''mature'' mind . is just a Kitsch ,nothing more than that .

  • I was gripped by the story - completely desensitized by all the killing. It was when she said that they gorge out the rat's eyes, and let it free to kill other rats that I realized how morbid it really was.

And then she began to dance. I couldn't help but feel shocked that I didn't react initially to such an inhumane thing. The dance symbolized the sense of accomplishment a catcher would feel, and how as an audience we are expected to be happy for destroying a rodent "manifestation".

  • very eerie

  • Rat= ethnic Albanians, water=everything needed to sate basic human needs, rat who survives only to kill off the rats outside the experiment= the police, the fascist soldiers, the riot cops In many third world countries. The dance at the end is meant to be an ironic counter point to her story of extermination. I assume the dance is some sort of specific dance done by the Albanians.....

  • AMAZING, marina you are genius , marina ti si genije

  • fuck you.

    └► that was art.

  • yep , busy on work ...

  • come on marina :P

  • This is VERY VERY smart...

  • What is that song at the end?! I can't seem to find it anywhere!

  • Comment removed

  • @tvb126 title: Kovács Apollónia -Adjon isten szekeret -

This is a hungarian song, from a genre of not too high standard, but its very popular(mulatós). This kind of genre is a typical east-europian and balcanic phenomena, connected to the culture of low-educated, simple people and to a certain extent originated from folk.

The meaning of lyric is approximately this:

    'They milk the black goat,

    They beat the brown(brown-skined=gipsy) wife,

    because she deserve it,

because she dont love his husband'

  • @csaszarhuni WOW thanks!!!

  • This isn't an indication of their weak education but rather shows how perceptive they were. It indicates their acuity needed in order to survive! I know how problematic their life still is because I'm Greek, and as far as I've been told by my parents, life in the 60s in Greece was difficult if you weren't rich. So they had to make up such strategies to finish the work to be completed. It definitely wasn't the life they were dreaming of but they learned to deal with it.

  • hahaha.. cOOL

  • what a load of utter bollocks.

  • Is that her?? No way, so hot!

  • lolol that was so random<3

  • whats that song? it's wonderful . shes a goddess

  • Serbian goddess! AMAZING!

  • Why try to educate people who have not taken the time to read 20th century philosophy ,semiotics, aesthetics. Their opinions matter like the herd .They are what we fight against.Rarely is an informal lesson gonna open their mind.

  • best ending to a video EVER

  • lmfao wtf.. this shit is funny... in a weird way

  • @SimonSezam oh yeah, i forgot. The DANCE at the end. Remember Pavlov's dog? Classical conditioning? Well... dance is final reward - what you get for being good doggy. In Serbia it is called "hleba i igara" (lat. panem et circenses). No need to draw. Brilliant performance.

  • @MysticalBaby

Can a photograph of a naked person be art?

  • @brambau, it depence.

  • @MysticalBaby you should have been borned in dark ages :) are you blush when you see a naked person? i mean... look at all those ancient Greeks...

  • @MysticalBaby I have seen the exhibit as well. There were signs at the front of the gallery that warned you about live nudity and disturbing imagery. Most people distractedly just walked by the sign, but I read it and was fully aware of what I was getting into. Though the gallery was quite alarming, I can't stay I wasn't warned well in advance.

"Nudity isn't art" is one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard. I've seen more nudity in my art history class than that entire Abramovic exhibit.

  • @MysticalBaby until I saw this exhibit I agreed with what you said, but the feeling of this display blends with such psychosis and suffering that the nudity just makes them seem more real. you don't see them as people, you see them as humans just the way you'd look at a herd of animals. Abramović did an amazing job conveying emotion in her exhibit, i was really impressed. it's not just nudists standing around, there are films with meaning just as any painting. go see it before you judge.

  • @MysticalBaby What are you talking about? You were BORN naked, so how is nudity "disgusting and inhumane"? It's the natural appearance of all things. Clothing is a human invention because of our lack of fur to protect us from the elements. Art classes regularly bring in nude models.

By your standards, the Venus de Milo is a scar upon all that is decent, Botticelli's Birth of Venus is a vulgarity, and Michelangelo's David is simply disgusting and shouldn't belong in museums. Wow.

  • Comment removed

  • @MysticalBaby ahaha, you're so funny. C'mon, seriously? You can't be. Wake up. I'm trying not to disrespect your opinion, but it's kinda hard when you're disrespecting my own, and a ton of other people's too.

Being naked is pathetic? Maybe. But so is wearing clothes. --- what I want to say is: don't make such a big deal out of it. One minute you're wearing clothes, the next you're not. Simple as that. Or you don't shower? You do, just not in public, right? Whatever, no difference to me.

  • @inEzEsquilo Again, I wouldn't be making a big deal about it if our, Americas, culture wasn't based on sex. That's why it's pathetic. You expect men to go into this exhibit and care more about the artistic meaning of nudity than the arousal they are feeling and how hot the people look? C'mon, seriously?

  • @MysticalBaby Humm. Okay, now you do have a point. I still can't agree with you, but I surely can respect your point of view now ;)

Although, the more those men see nudity, the more it starts to be something natural, the less it will be such a sexual thing. But you're right, that still will be something hard to accomplish to most people (thinking that nudity is natural).

  • @MysticalBaby Except, that's actually what happened. It was actually pretty sterile and not particularly arousing. Nudity itself often is far less arousing than covered nudity. Don't forget, that in other countries (maybe Iran) where the culture "isn't based on sex," whatever that even means, (don't forget, human existence is based on sex.) they would say something similar, like "How can you care about artistic meaning when they show their calves and uncovered hair like sluts."
