@fallingfromjupiter He just changes to triplets there, that's all. It's a pretty standard thing to do, it's just the way he orchestrates it in to his groove that makes it sound complicated. Think of it like this, you are grooving away and each time you play a fill, it's a 1/16 note fill(1e+a 2e+a etc) then you change to 1/8 note triplets(1 trip let, 2 trip let etc). That's the idea of what he is at there.

Jo jo is the only drummer whom I watch that don't make me feel like i'm shit, tho compared to him I am a bit feaces like.... It's the way his musicality comes before his technique. The way he articulates his skills inspires me more than any other, and he delivers what he does in a way that makes you want to move... like how you feel when purdie plays..

Yeah, Jojo is sweet. Even though it's very 'heady' music he makes it flow..perfectly. Some interesting comments on the video. I don't understand why people compare musicians as if they are athlete's. I am fairly certain that music is most definitely NOT competitive, and there isn't a draft pick either. We shouldn't compare 'drummers' or genres like this..it is almost disrespectful to the nature of music.

Some drummers (like Jo Jo) for example may be technically better than the likes of Phil Rudd but that doesn't necessarily make him better...or the beats he plays any bette does it?....Just more technical which in my opinion usually isn't better. Anywhoozles, personally, I believe Jojo is not only technically better, but adds a whole new life to the music, since his soul is very much so engraved into his playing, and it adds a much more intense emotional connection. Musical drumming is neither ''choppy'' nor very simple, because music dictates what is appropriate. Electronic music beats are often complicated not because of drummers desire to be choppy, but simply because it's part of the style. If Mayer would pull out this in rock situation, I'd agree with you, but he was playing stylistically musical in this electronic gig. Rudd is very good drummer in his style. For me it's hard to compare style vs style; it's really matter of taste :)

I understand where your coming from as I myself am not really a big fan of electronic/techno either. But being a drummer myself I base my judgement on who is in my mind the technically best drummer by their ability to play well in all styles of music, and their technique, not by what style of music they choose to play. I understand you would rather listen to an AC/DC style beat. The reason why that style is so popular is because a vast majority of people dont like to be challenged intellectually

So that tells me it's not about the music but about the chops. Musically satisfying purely from a showing off point of view. There's nothing intellectual about it.

well, thats not necessarily true. Its not that I wouldnt listen to the music if Rudd was playing. If he was able to play the style well along with the current style he's playing, then yes I would. Its really not about the chops, its about playing for the music, or whats required for the musical piece.style. The reason why Jojo's chops are excellent is because they are required to perfrom that style. the good Thing about this is that it allows him to move to of genres of music with ease.

Well I speak from my own experiences. I used to listen and go to gigs of chick corea with weckl and novak for example. I was completely impressed. But when I thought about it it was only because of the musicianship and not the actual tunes. I find it unfortunate that some of these extreme amazingly technically gifted drummers find their only outlet to perform and show their skill is through incredibly poor music.

Poor from a personal point of view. It's impossible for me to explain as it's a personal feeling. I'll start with the actual sounds though, not the music just the actual sounds they choose to create their music. I say it's poor other people think it's great. It's personal.

I understand, as I once viewed music of that genre as noise. But once I started studying it and listening to it, I started to take a liking to it. I guess what I mean to say is that as a musician, I am continuously learning, growing and trying to push myself. This leads me to listen to musicians that both push the musical boundries and that do the complete opposite. Music is a launguage, and I wan't to learn how do speak it very very well. In order to do that, I need to learn from the best.

The fact is that Mayer uses the rest of Nerve to deploy his technical skills but at the same time his musicality as well.
