He's a good guy, incredible drummer, What a true inspiration. Makes me feel that this world is wonderful. He takes the hatred away, no one can hate him.
@Timmyinc44 IMO brushes are meant for swooshing over the drumhead.
Just hitting the drumhead, like one would do with sticks, makes a softer sound, but that's what most of the noobs do who don't know what brushes are meant for
@fallingfromjupiter He just changes to triplets there, that's all. It's a pretty standard thing to do, it's just the way he orchestrates it in to his groove that makes it sound complicated. Think of it like this, you are grooving away and each time you play a fill, it's a 1/16 note fill(1e+a 2e+a etc) then you change to 1/8 note triplets(1 trip let, 2 trip let etc). That's the idea of what he is at there.
Jo jo is the only drummer whom I watch that don't make me feel like i'm shit, tho compared to him I am a bit feaces like.... It's the way his musicality comes before his technique. The way he articulates his skills inspires me more than any other, and he delivers what he does in a way that makes you want to move... like how you feel when purdie plays..
Yeah, Jojo is sweet. Even though it's very 'heady' music he makes it flow..perfectly. Some interesting comments on the video. I don't understand why people compare musicians as if they are athlete's. I am fairly certain that music is most definitely NOT competitive, and there isn't a draft pick either. We shouldn't compare 'drummers' or genres like this..it is almost disrespectful to the nature of music.

It's great! But in the same way as I saw AC/DC last week and Phil Rudd was playing his "bum-tit" all night. Difference is somehow the "bum-tit" gave me more of a horn! And I'm a drummer.... what does that tell ya kids? Yep.. it's all about the music. Not the chops!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hi retard. Thanks for your childish retort. Indeed there is different types of music and different types of drummers. Some drummers (like Jo Jo) for example may be technically better than the likes of Phil Rudd but that doesn't necessarily make him better...or the beats he plays any bette does it?....Just more technical which in my opinion usually isn't better. That was my point.
The only reason it was "childish retort" like anyone really talks that way anymore, is that i didnt feel like getting into these comment arguements like everyone else on here is so fond in doinging but your response is so lame comparing like AC/DC to someone who has nothing to do with that type of music, he has a jazz music background, not everyone likes the same old drum patterns, i respect that
Your argument was a good one til you stuck "retard' on the end. That was the childish bit. Or maybe you were signing off your name?? Who know's but anyway, there's no point getting upset by an opinion. Or going around calling people retards just because they don't share the same opinion as yourself
jojo mayer is one of the most musical drummers out there, it just so happens that in drum n bass/jungalist music, drums arguably play the most prominent part - it requires great technique and 'chops'.
dont take literally obviously your not a retard, im just saying there is always negative comments on friggen youtube i hate seeing that but i just using colorful language is all there worst words in the english language dont trip. this goes for both of us if u aint gonna say nice things dont say it at all. (or type it)
"Or maybe you were signing off your name" that was more childish and slightly sounding like it came from someone who is mentally challenged winkabloblob.
... I think just refuting at all makes you just as retarded. Anywhoozles, personally, I believe Jojo is not only technically better, but adds a whole new life to the music, since his soul is very much so engraved into his playing, and it adds a much more intense emotional connection. But I get your point about the simplicity of things giving that really great drive sometimes...
Musical drumming is neither ''choppy'' nor very simple, because music dictates what is appropriate. Electronic music beats are often complicated not because of drummers desire to be choppy, but simply because it's part of the style. If Mayer would pull out this in rock situation, I'd agree with you, but he was playing stylistically musical in this electronic gig. Rudd is very good drummer in his style. For me it's hard to compare style vs style; it's really matter of taste :)
it's awesome that you use ac/dc as an example. i mean, I'm sure jojo couldn't ever think of any of ac/dc's music. why doesn't he just play to make everything sound practically identical? obviously it makes them more marketable -.- it's a fucking shame if you ask me
The only thing that proved is that you're a fan of JoJo and I'm not ;) I'll admit he is a technically outstanding drummer. Just not a fan of his music. An opinion no one can change other than myself. Cherio
I understand where your coming from as I myself am not really a big fan of electronic/techno either. But being a drummer myself I base my judgement on who is in my mind the technically best drummer by their ability to play well in all styles of music, and their technique, not by what style of music they choose to play. I understand you would rather listen to an AC/DC style beat. The reason why that style is so popular is because a vast majority of people dont like to be challenged intellectually
It's got nothing to do with being "challenged musically" It's all about the music. Be honest, would you listen to nerve if Rudd was playing? Probably not. So that tells me it's not about the music but about the chops. Musically satisfying purely from a showing off point of view. There's nothing intellectual about it.
well, thats not necessarily true. Its not that I wouldnt listen to the music if Rudd was playing. If he was able to play the style well along with the current style he's playing, then yes I would. Its really not about the chops, its about playing for the music, or whats required for the musical piece.style. The reason why Jojo's chops are excellent is because they are required to perfrom that style. the good Thing about this is that it allows him to move to of genres of music with ease.
Well I speak from my own experiences. I used to listen and go to gigs of chick corea with weckl and novak for example. I was completely impressed. But when I thought about it it was only because of the musicianship and not the actual tunes. I find it unfortunate that some of these extreme amazingly technically gifted drummers find their only outlet to perform and show their skill is through incredibly poor music.
lol I know exactly what your saying. But there also has to be some understanding that the music they perform and write is on the level of their musical knowledge and capabilities and in some way or another, serves a purpose. Now as for dave weckle its clear that his music is written and composed to show his xtreme drumming skills, which to me is stupid. but other than that, how is music written by chick corea considered poor?
Poor from a personal point of view. It's impossible for me to explain as it's a personal feeling. I'll start with the actual sounds though, not the music just the actual sounds they choose to create their music. I say it's poor other people think it's great. It's personal.
I understand, as I once viewed music of that genre as noise. But once I started studying it and listening to it, I started to take a liking to it. I guess what I mean to say is that as a musician, I am continuously learning, growing and trying to push myself. This leads me to listen to musicians that both push the musical boundries and that do the complete opposite. Music is a launguage, and I wan't to learn how do speak it very very well. In order to do that, I need to learn from the best.
I will agree on what you're saying . . . partially . . . because some people (musicians) may consider noise, music such as BeBop jazz . . . The fact is that Mayer uses the rest of Nerve to deploy his technical skills but at the same time his musicality as well. And we all agree on the fact that both his skills and musicality are quite rare nowadays. . . Cheers to all drummers out there! ! !
We all listen to different kinds of music for differing reasons like I listen to Jojo for extremely challenging but grooving drums, just I listen to Animal collective to chill out or watch thomas pridgen to shred.
Once again Jojo grooves like the great MUSICIAN he is.The world is full of meaningless techniciansand drum acrobats, but Jojo is a GIANT on the instrument...
