  • Painting white is a pain in the ass, the damn paint never lays out evenly.

I base spray the pauldrons in white, then paint the rims black. Faster and SO MUCH easier.

  • Nigga Templars.

  • @roman11777 African American Templars you mean...

  • hey guys where did you get the model because i cant find one

  • Hey, I'm still not sure where to apply the highlights. Could you make a picture where you highlight the appropriate spaces in red or something?

  • Black templars need a new codex xD

  • @Oblideration1kx blastphemy!!! the templar dex atm is amazing ive not lost a game with it yet ... sadly matt ward is probably guna ruin the new one :(

  • so Im new to painting. how do you do highlights? do you use a lighter color and drybrush it over our base coat?

  • what's wrong with a chaos black sprayer?

  • Where can you buy some Black Templar figures/army? I can't find any on the site.

  • @mindspa24 You have to buy regular, vanilla space marines and then buy a Black Templar "upgrade set." The set includes a bunch of Black Temp. Heraldry, banners, shoulderpads, helmets, etc,. What you do is you assemble the basic space marines and then customize them with the upgrade set. Voila, Black Templar army.

  • I would've played Black Temps if they weren't such a crappy army. Especially with the painting, they seem the most newbie friendly D;

  • @Tactics40K you need to buy normal space marines and the upgrade kits which are under the space marine category on gw's website

  • @fernie240 You replied to the wrong person mate.

  • @Tactics40K i think im guna cry :( they not a crappy army ive not lost a game with them yet , been playing for a year and played about 160 games give or take roughly 3 a week . what do you think is bad about them ? ( apart from matt ward probably ruining them in the new ed )

  • Going back through some of your older videos because I'm having APJ withdrawal, and damn I still can't get over how kick ass the music you use is. Feels like the old westwood days of C&C songs. I love it.

  • would undercoat black also be okay since i'm too greedy to buy chaos black :P

  • It amuses me that Black Templars are almost all CHAOS black :P

  • @KhazadDumify That ingredient alone makes them so Bad Ass

  • @KhazadDumify Well, they are BLACK Templar. But I see your point. The naming of paints of kind of ironic with this particular army.

  • Please do a raven guard scheme please please please please please!!!!!!

  • epic job could you do a raven guard color scheme please?

  • Okay so I'm a PROPER noob and everything, I'm not artistic when it comes to painting at all, wont pretend I am. I enjoy watching your videos, makes me wanna paint my models again, but why do you actually dilute the paints? what benefit does it have? will the paints keep well once diluted?

  • @kratoslevit You have to dilude the paints a bit to make the application much smoother. By this i mean that if you dilude the paint correctly you will have a pretty even coverage and there would be no brush marks on the model caused if the paint is too thick.

  • Left handed painters FTW ^_^, great territorial man, this has been a great help on my current project. Keep um coming.

  • hey can i use white primer(cause i already got it) to prime this ?

  • @SUPERAOK100 Yes, you'll just need to paint it black over the white.

  • Name music?

  • @awesomepaintjob

I would love to talk to you one on one through IM or skype, just to ask you some tips for a chapter I'm going to be putting together, my Imperial Stars

  • @kornickronic dont you insult 40k is way better than piece of shit magic

  • What are you using to adhere the model base to the paint lid?

  • Have you used the GW spray can undercoat, if so, how do you rate them?

  • Les when you say you dilute...how many drops in the paint should I use

  • @carversoftball he often use 1 drop or u can see 1:2 = half

  • hey guys sorry to ask but im a noob who is just now getting into warhammer stuff what is the difference between all these different colored space marines?

  • Comment removed

  • @dwarfminerwillie Don't bother with 40k. It's a broken game really. Just start Warhammer Fantasy.

  • @kornickronic warhammer fantasy?

  • @kornickronic

I love both, but i still think that 40k is better :P

  • Hey! Decided to start a black templar army. Can i just buy a space marine tactical squad, paint them black and call them black templars? is "Legal"?

  • @1996ragnar well yeah, since they are space marines, that's what you use for any chapter, you need to get the chapter conversion kit if you want them to look better though.

  • @1996ragnar Sure can mate. They won't look as "Templary" so to speak but yeah. It's your army you can do what you like.

  • Hi,may i know what is the music you used?

  • I'm new to warhammer painting. Would it look good still if you don't grey all over the black?

  • @AidanChandlee try it out on one of ur models, if u dont like it beach the paint off and start again

  • @AidanChandlee Yeah, The Grey Highlight Is Just A Better Effect You Can

  • finally, someone who is left handed :D thanx for the video

  • Did you water down your chaos black paint for base coat?

  • Is that the Whermacht cross?

  • @cassius969 maybe...

  • Vallejo game colour

  • whats vgc?

  • @boom911boom Where can you get vgc paints?

  • K thanks I'll try it soon

  • Im having trouble highlighting the Kneepad. can someone tell me how? When i do it it looks to thick or to think even when diluted.

  • @MrRabidCat try dry bursh tec thats what i use eg just a small dash of paint then but it on......or the paint coulour needs to be changed for the part ur doing. also if ur going for dry brush tec you can add to it makes it easyer

  • lol the music made me fantasize about black templar assault terminators bashin' orks with thuneder hammers

  • I'm just beginning and what brush would I need for these types of projects??

  • is there a particular type of putty you use for attaching your models to the old paint jars?

  • if you paint the shoulder pads uniformly grey, why use the underlying colors still? there is no need for it since you wont see it, right?

probably im making a rookie mistake, but please explain. your models namely look amazing!

  • What type and size is the brush you're using?

  • eight of theas poeple are harutics and will burn in the emperors flame ( the eight poeple that disliked this vidoe will die basikly

  • would it still look good if you sprayed black onto the model as a primer and just worked off that, or should you hand paint the whole thing?

  • @GRIMTHENINJA it would be fine just working with black is rough to get the whites in.

  • @GRIMTHENINJA Generally it's better to hand paint it , as spray paint often misses out bits , such as under arms or the legs and can pool in different area .

  • @GRIMTHENINJA thats what i do, i love the rough look of the undercoat!

  • @GRIMTHENINJA you could use black primer, but you will have to paint it over with black anyway, because if you dont you get a painfull difference in colors, since the spray black looks different then the black from the pot :)

and if you prime it a different color you cant miss a spot :)

  • @GRIMTHENINJA Well priming it by hand lets you get into all the cracks and crevaces of the mini but if you want to do a fast prime and still have it look pretty decent go with spray paint. However like what Les used use a air brush because it's like painting by hand but better.

  • @GRIMTHENINJA I know ur comment is almost a year old, but i spray paint mine first

  • @SamFTheCriticKid Thats not really what he asked

  • i like it

  • if i want to make BT marines do i just buy a regular space marines battle pack and paint them like black space marines and use them like BT marines or do i need to get special BT marines..

  • hey dude imma noob but i want to know why is my skull white diluted? coz i just bought it and the colour really sucks and i still dun get how you made the white colour on your templar so damn smooth looking

  • I need the citadels or vallejo paint =/

In Argentina its more difficult to get it but not impossible.

  • i do white hilights over codex grey hilights, what do you think about that, is it too cheesey o is it cool?

  • Is the first colour Codex Grey?

  • Comment removed

  • im converting my half blood angles half white scars to black templar.

Nice paint job!! How long did it take to paint that model??

  • Also you where thinking out loud in a previous video whether or not the Model Air Grey Primer was a grey primer or simply the color of grey primer. I was reading Vallejo's leaflet which states that while not technically a primer. The Model Air paints have more cohesion to surfaces than regular paint and can hence be used as primer.

  • What good is it to basecoat with grey when you are doing a black model?

  • please paint hawk lord

  • i just brought my first ever space marine kit and i would like to know what is the best colour scheme for a begginer because some of those terms i dont get so if u repy thank you

  • @woody1373 This isn't the place to start with, sorry! :). Start with "How to Paint Citadel Miniatures", then buy a Wash Brush, Medium Brush, and Fine Detail Brush. You will want to look into a Large Brush later. Then buy paints based on your colour scheme (I would recommend a Blue & Gold scheme, default Ultramarines). You'll also need a spray gun, some propellant, and start with the foundation paints. This may be confusing, but it will make sense in a couple days or weeks!

  • is there any other methods to highlight black then with grey?

  • I have seen a few artist sticking the miniatures on top of pots or cans of some sort like you did in this video. How exactly are you accomplishing this? I am new to the hobby and I think this would make things a lot easier for someone with man hands. LOL

  • wow.........dam i wish i was good at this as you XD your beastly!

  • dude your vids rock. it sucks every game store around me like the gamesworshop all closed down. Keep posting!!

  • when you say "primed with an airbrush" what do you mean exactly ? im new to the hobby :D

  • @DiplomaticGoomba hemeans he lays an even coat of paint down on top of the m,odel using an airbrush, this helps the paint to stick to the model, and its way better than painting straight onto the plastic. a bit like the basecoats that GW sell

  • @DiplomaticGoomba Priming is giving a base coat to a model. For example you'd use a darker primer (which can be spray paint or in this case he used an airbrush) such as black for darker colors. You'd use a lighter primer for lighter colors. For example, a white primer would go with a red base coat and a black primer would work with a grey base coat or other colors and so on.

  • dude thanks so much for this vid, you have no clue how much this helped me out

  • you do commision?

  • Hey, do you have a video on how to paint the Blood Ravens from the Dawn of War games?

  • could i paint my space marines black with say red shoulder pads??? and still be able to play them in a tournement or something

  • @8BEHEMOTH8 No it wont because bleached bone is more yellowish, the templars scheme is a pure white with everything else black you could use it but itd be really different looking. But its your models so do it how you like :)

  • Nice work! I'm going to have to get some of the flow enhancer for my painting.

  • @keslac23 but could you just paint the space marines you get in like a combat pack as black templars

  • @dbzsayian23 you can paint them with pink nail polish, throw purple glitter on it and be done if you want. If it's your model do what you want. But space marines are generic and can be painted any chapter in the codex. But certain chapters have their own codex like the Black Templars for example.

  • Comment removed

  • @dbzsayian23 they are both space marines but different chapters. And since UM use the sm codex and BT use their own codex, they are NOT the same.

  • @awesomepaintjob i'm having real trouble with my vallejo game colour, i bought a few bottles off ebay and they are really runny, it's really hard to get the paint to apply evenly. do you have any idea whats wrong or is that the way the paint is?

  • @dbzsayian23 Black Templars and UM's have little resemblance really. The UM's are fully codex adherent, the noblest of the Astartes if you like. The BT's meanwhile, having an esimated 6,000 battle brothers are nothing of the sort, they also don't employ whirlwinds, sniper scouts, they despise psykers and refuse to have even sanctioned librarians serve within their ranks. They favour hand to hand combat over all else and are savage. Totally and utterly different to the UM's. Hope that helps.

  • @dbzsayian23

Comparing them is like comparing a Space Marine with a human.

  • @dbzsayian23 let me put it in clearer words for lester. NO THEY'RE NOT THE SAME.

  • @dbzsayian23 there are different legions, or factions, called chapters in the SM and CSM armies. Every chapter has it's own special 'rules'. some official, some not, some just a different color scheme. Some famous Space Marine chapters are Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Black Templars, etc. some have more cc, some more vehicles, some special rules, some different stats.

  • @dbzsayian23 They're Ultramarines, if the Ultramarines weren't bitches.

  • @meticulousowl

I wouldn't even say that. The whole Black Templar atmosphere is so dark and gruesome. Skulls, chains, Maltese crosses... It's so powerful.

  • @jeleopard Completely, very occultist

  • were black templars baced off the knights teutonic????im sure templars were red and white.

  • Whats means 1:1 water?

Sorry im new in this hobby and i want to learn.

  • @Occhiodiargento

It means thin the paint with an equal amount of water 50/50.

  • Just got my space marines and these videos are going to help me sooo much thanks for the AWESOME paint job dude keep em coming.,..

  • If black paint is too reflective ,why not simply use the Chaos black spray? Thas the same as Chaos black but it doesnt shine at all. Please reply to this because i plan to start painting these guys and that seems to be a pretty important decision ^^

    Spray or Paint? ^^

  • What is that thing its stuck to?

  • how long it takes to paint one of these?

  • Would you suggest Astronomicon Grey (hope i spelled that right, lol) as a base for white?

  • just have to say i thought 40k sucked until i watched your vid man i was a fantasy kinda guy ( just starting) but when i saw how cool ur space marines are im going black templars man THX!!!!!!!! =D

  • Suddenly my prize commander looks like some 14 year old inexperienced kid painted it.=(

  • Only chapter cooler than the Black Templars are the Salamanders. I like the way you paint. It's like...realistic. But perhaps TOO neat and clean to be centuries old power armour. Unless that weird paint shortage the Imperium was having is over.

  • im in a bind, i painted 2 of my marines blood angels and a dreadnought, didnt like my style and am wondering if i should switch?

  • HAHA, i actually requested this 3 months ago! THANKs MAN!

  • Thanks for the Vid, I always have a problem with highlighting black, it either looks unfinished or gray. IMO that is the hardest color to do.

  • Hey Man Nice Vids! I Showed This Vid To My Friend, He Said It Helped Him Alot.

I Was Just Wondering If I Sent You A Free Tau Fire Warrior Would You Make A Tutorial On How To Paint Him. I Really Need Help With The Tau.

  • How long does it take u to finish this SM?

  • Without the camera, 30 minutes.

  • is there any other black instead of chaos black?

cos I think it is too shiny... any suggestion?

  • Black reflects light more than any color. Black paint is pretty much the same no matter what brand. I used Krylon matte clear in the finished picture but there is only so much you can do to make it not reflect. Simple color principles. Or look at your minis in the dark :)

  • The black looks shiny because it's smooth by using thin coats. You could dull it down by not thinning your paints and leaving brush strokes everywhere but that would make me sad :(

  • @awesomepaintjob Whoa! I didn't know this was so time consuming!!

  • just inspires mee to paint paint paint man, nice workk (:

  • is there a second part to this video? great vids btw,

  • cool!

the only thing I wonder when I look at your vids: how the hell are you keeping that brush that pointy?! seems like it's soft, but not too soft, and it's always pointy. how? :)

  • @tordenskrald yeah i know mine are all frayede and flat after a week my painting would be so much better if i could keep my brush pointy

  • @tordenskrald Kolinsky brushes. And taking good care of them.

  • Can't wait for the second part. :-)

  • Holy crap Les! Damn good video. It's fantastic that your genuinely trying to help people out & not just cash in like so many others. I do wish you'd get some sort of a commission from all the products you actually believe in and use. The way you describe their qualities is great, cause let me tell you man, I have spent an ass load of money buying just about everything you've shown us. Two Harder & Steenbeck Infinity air brushes, all the Van Gogh H2Oils, & ALL the Vallejo paints available. Thanks

  • how did you affix the base of the model to the top of that paint pot?

  • @hooliganlovespints it's poster tac.

  • nice to see you supporting warmonger and awesome series and yea !! AIR BRUSH !

  • Les is spot on. Thinned paints might take a little longer to build up a solid color, but they go on soooo much smoother, and you dont get those obvious brush strokes. ALWAYS thin your paint.

  • How did you attach the base of the model to the paint pot? ive seen this done alot and ive been wanting to try it but i dont want to mess it up and lose a paint pot and a model.

  • @TCmoru poster tac. 3M makes the blue stuff but they all do the same thing.

  • love the video tutorial, just curious, what song did you use?

  • @NemesisWulf The intro music was made by me and the song that kicks in a little after in generated by Sony Cinescore Software.

  • oh I see, I might give that a shot thanks ^^

  • i like what u did with the base how did u do it

  • @airbrushmaster900 the base is from youtube user Natakue's online store. The store link is the sponsor at the beginning of the video.

  • @djDavidWolf warhammer 40k is disturbing, so the music should match :)

  • I never had so many people comment and try to tell me better ways to do things lol. But if this tutorial was FAIL I think the ratings would tell me. Thank you for all your input.

  • Why would you not use the air brush for the black as well?

  • @Grifftrogg issue already addressed. It was done because a small percentage of gamers have access to one. And believe it or not, people like to see every process, even base coating. I've done it in all my videos with a brush.

  • Looking good, Les! Just on time, too, as I'm planning on painting up some Raven Guard soon.

  • wooo nice work ;)

  • cool video as always

  • I like your old logo better...

do you still go by your old slogan?

"get serious, paint your stuff!" that's a great slogan, if you publish a "how to paint book" that can be it's title

  • if the base color for black templars is going to be chaos black then why not just prime them with chaos black

  • @wakcedout primer is different than paint. Primer absorbs while dry paint does not. I could have airbrushed the black on but I have always hand painted the colors in these SM tutorials.

  • what about astronomican grey (foundation), its preety bright ( I even use is AS white and after my black washes I just do highlights on detail with skull white . ( sits realy well)

  • @Kapelannew I don't use GW paints so no foundation paints. GW names are used because it's more familiar.

  • damn you can just watch your vids for great music

  • i would just drybrush him a mix of chaos black and shadow grey at the beggining, give him battle grey, codex grey, fortress gray, and finally skull white for the shoulders.

  • @Altier215 yikes! Dry brushing a space marine?!?! Well, if it makes you happy :)

  • Love your tutorials but does your vid camera have a manual focus setting instead of autofocus? If you set to manual focus it wouldn't blur every time you move your hands to adjust the view of the model.

  • @jimmy151791 it does but my hand is constantly moving the model so manual focus would NOT be ideal.

  • Does it also have a manual f-stop? If you used a smaller aperture you could set a fixed focus and even with movement it would be in focus almost all the time. Most of the new digital cams don't have manual f-stops though so your probably right.

  • You mentioned NMM, thats something I'm trying to start experimenting with. Have you ever done it? I'd love to see a vid if you have :D

  • YES! Finally. Thanks so much man. I've painted so many of these and I still can't get them to look good. This will help a lot!

  • dude, your intro music is pretty cool XD and awesome vid BTW

  • super as ever bro. the airbrush really does make a differance.
