@Oblideration1kx blastphemy!!! the templar dex atm is amazing ive not lost a game with it yet ... sadly matt ward is probably guna ruin the new one :(
@mindspa24 You have to buy regular, vanilla space marines and then buy a Black Templar "upgrade set." The set includes a bunch of Black Temp. Heraldry, banners, shoulderpads, helmets, etc,. What you do is you assemble the basic space marines and then customize them with the upgrade set. Voila, Black Templar army.
@Tactics40K i think im guna cry :( they not a crappy army ive not lost a game with them yet , been playing for a year and played about 160 games give or take roughly 3 a week . what do you think is bad about them ? ( apart from matt ward probably ruining them in the new ed )
Going back through some of your older videos because I'm having APJ withdrawal, and damn I still can't get over how kick ass the music you use is. Feels like the old westwood days of C&C songs. I love it.
Okay so I'm a PROPER noob and everything, I'm not artistic when it comes to painting at all, wont pretend I am. I enjoy watching your videos, makes me wanna paint my models again, but why do you actually dilute the paints? what benefit does it have? will the paints keep well once diluted?
@kratoslevit You have to dilude the paints a bit to make the application much smoother. By this i mean that if you dilude the paint correctly you will have a pretty even coverage and there would be no brush marks on the model caused if the paint is too thick.
I would love to talk to you one on one through IM or skype, just to ask you some tips for a chapter I'm going to be putting together, my Imperial Stars
hey guys sorry to ask but im a noob who is just now getting into warhammer stuff what is the difference between all these different colored space marines?
@dwarfminerwillie The Different colours are just how each chapter paints their armour. There are some Chapter specific codex's such as Dark Angels,Black Templars, Space Wolves, Grey Knights, Blood Angels. They have some special rules which make them play differently to the standard marines. If ur going to pick a marine force check around online or ask gamers in store how each play before you choose.
@1996ragnar well yeah, since they are space marines, that's what you use for any chapter, you need to get the chapter conversion kit if you want them to look better though.
@MrRabidCat try dry bursh tec thats what i use eg just a small dash of paint then but it on......or the paint coulour needs to be changed for the part ur doing. also if ur going for dry brush tec you can add to it makes it easyer
@GRIMTHENINJA Generally it's better to hand paint it , as spray paint often misses out bits , such as under arms or the legs and can pool in different area .
@GRIMTHENINJA you could use black primer, but you will have to paint it over with black anyway, because if you dont you get a painfull difference in colors, since the spray black looks different then the black from the pot :)
and if you prime it a different color you cant miss a spot :)
@GRIMTHENINJA Well priming it by hand lets you get into all the cracks and crevaces of the mini but if you want to do a fast prime and still have it look pretty decent go with spray paint. However like what Les used use a air brush because it's like painting by hand but better.
if i want to make BT marines do i just buy a regular space marines battle pack and paint them like black space marines and use them like BT marines or do i need to get special BT marines..
hey dude imma noob but i want to know why is my skull white diluted? coz i just bought it and the colour really sucks and i still dun get how you made the white colour on your templar so damn smooth looking
Also you where thinking out loud in a previous video whether or not the Model Air Grey Primer was a grey primer or simply the color of grey primer. I was reading Vallejo's leaflet which states that while not technically a primer. The Model Air paints have more cohesion to surfaces than regular paint and can hence be used as primer.
i just brought my first ever space marine kit and i would like to know what is the best colour scheme for a begginer because some of those terms i dont get so if u repy thank you
@woody1373 This isn't the place to start with, sorry! :). Start with "How to Paint Citadel Miniatures", then buy a Wash Brush, Medium Brush, and Fine Detail Brush. You will want to look into a Large Brush later. Then buy paints based on your colour scheme (I would recommend a Blue & Gold scheme, default Ultramarines). You'll also need a spray gun, some propellant, and start with the foundation paints. This may be confusing, but it will make sense in a couple days or weeks!
I have seen a few artist sticking the miniatures on top of pots or cans of some sort like you did in this video. How exactly are you accomplishing this? I am new to the hobby and I think this would make things a lot easier for someone with man hands. LOL
@DiplomaticGoomba hemeans he lays an even coat of paint down on top of the m,odel using an airbrush, this helps the paint to stick to the model, and its way better than painting straight onto the plastic. a bit like the basecoats that GW sell
@DiplomaticGoomba Priming is giving a base coat to a model. For example you'd use a darker primer (which can be spray paint or in this case he used an airbrush) such as black for darker colors. You'd use a lighter primer for lighter colors. For example, a white primer would go with a red base coat and a black primer would work with a grey base coat or other colors and so on.
@8BEHEMOTH8 No it wont because bleached bone is more yellowish, the templars scheme is a pure white with everything else black you could use it but itd be really different looking. But its your models so do it how you like :)
@dbzsayian23 you can paint them with pink nail polish, throw purple glitter on it and be done if you want. If it's your model do what you want. But space marines are generic and can be painted any chapter in the codex. But certain chapters have their own codex like the Black Templars for example.
@dbzsayian23 Black Templars are about as far away from Ultramarines as you can get. They don't follow the Codex Astartes and they have their own game codes.
@awesomepaintjob i'm having real trouble with my vallejo game colour, i bought a few bottles off ebay and they are really runny, it's really hard to get the paint to apply evenly. do you have any idea whats wrong or is that the way the paint is?
@dbzsayian23 Black Templars and UM's have little resemblance really. The UM's are fully codex adherent, the noblest of the Astartes if you like. The BT's meanwhile, having an esimated 6,000 battle brothers are nothing of the sort, they also don't employ whirlwinds, sniper scouts, they despise psykers and refuse to have even sanctioned librarians serve within their ranks. They favour hand to hand combat over all else and are savage. Totally and utterly different to the UM's. Hope that helps.
@dbzsayian23 there are different legions, or factions, called chapters in the SM and CSM armies. Every chapter has it's own special 'rules'. some official, some not, some just a different color scheme. Some famous Space Marine chapters are Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Black Templars, etc. some have more cc, some more vehicles, some special rules, some different stats.
If black paint is too reflective ,why not simply use the Chaos black spray? Thas the same as Chaos black but it doesnt shine at all. Please reply to this because i plan to start painting these guys and that seems to be a pretty important decision ^^
just have to say i thought 40k sucked until i watched your vid man i was a fantasy kinda guy ( just starting) but when i saw how cool ur space marines are im going black templars man THX!!!!!!!! =D
Only chapter cooler than the Black Templars are the Salamanders. I like the way you paint. It's like...realistic. But perhaps TOO neat and clean to be centuries old power armour. Unless that weird paint shortage the Imperium was having is over.
Black reflects light more than any color. Black paint is pretty much the same no matter what brand. I used Krylon matte clear in the finished picture but there is only so much you can do to make it not reflect. Simple color principles. Or look at your minis in the dark :)
The black looks shiny because it's smooth by using thin coats. You could dull it down by not thinning your paints and leaving brush strokes everywhere but that would make me sad :(
the only thing I wonder when I look at your vids: how the hell are you keeping that brush that pointy?! seems like it's soft, but not too soft, and it's always pointy. how? :)
Holy crap Les! Damn good video. It's fantastic that your genuinely trying to help people out & not just cash in like so many others. I do wish you'd get some sort of a commission from all the products you actually believe in and use. The way you describe their qualities is great, cause let me tell you man, I have spent an ass load of money buying just about everything you've shown us. Two Harder & Steenbeck Infinity air brushes, all the Van Gogh H2Oils, & ALL the Vallejo paints available. Thanks
Les is spot on. Thinned paints might take a little longer to build up a solid color, but they go on soooo much smoother, and you dont get those obvious brush strokes. ALWAYS thin your paint.
How did you attach the base of the model to the paint pot? ive seen this done alot and ive been wanting to try it but i dont want to mess it up and lose a paint pot and a model.
I never had so many people comment and try to tell me better ways to do things lol. But if this tutorial was FAIL I think the ratings would tell me. Thank you for all your input.
@Grifftrogg issue already addressed. It was done because a small percentage of gamers have access to one. And believe it or not, people like to see every process, even base coating. I've done it in all my videos with a brush.
@wakcedout primer is different than paint. Primer absorbs while dry paint does not. I could have airbrushed the black on but I have always hand painted the colors in these SM tutorials.
what about astronomican grey (foundation), its preety bright ( I even use is AS white and after my black washes I just do highlights on detail with skull white . ( sits realy well)
i would just drybrush him a mix of chaos black and shadow grey at the beggining, give him battle grey, codex grey, fortress gray, and finally skull white for the shoulders.
Love your tutorials but does your vid camera have a manual focus setting instead of autofocus? If you set to manual focus it wouldn't blur every time you move your hands to adjust the view of the model.
Does it also have a manual f-stop? If you used a smaller aperture you could set a fixed focus and even with movement it would be in focus almost all the time. Most of the new digital cams don't have manual f-stops though so your probably right.
Painting white is a pain in the ass, the damn paint never lays out evenly.
I base spray the pauldrons in white, then paint the rims black. Faster and SO MUCH easier.

@awesomepaintjob Whoa! I didn't know this was so time consuming!!

clarkey1991bba 2 years ago
cool!
the only thing I wonder when I look at your vids: how the hell are you keeping that brush that pointy?! seems like it's soft, but not too soft, and it's always pointy. how? :)
tordenskrald 2 years ago
@tordenskrald yeah i know mine are all frayede and flat after a week my painting would be so much better if i could keep my brush pointy
ultramarine1234 2 years ago
@tordenskrald Kolinsky brushes. And taking good care of them.

Thanks

how did you affix the base of the model to the top of that paint pot?
hooliganlovespints 2 years ago
@hooliganlovespints it's poster tac.
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
nice to see you supporting warmonger and awesome series and yea !! AIR BRUSH !
Number1GamerAsh 2 years ago
Les is spot on. Thinned paints might take a little longer to build up a solid color, but they go on soooo much smoother, and you dont get those obvious brush strokes. ALWAYS thin your paint.
Grimmbo 2 years ago
How did you attach the base of the model to the paint pot? ive seen this done alot and ive been wanting to try it but i dont want to mess it up and lose a paint pot and a model.
TCmoru 2 years ago
@TCmoru poster tac. 3M makes the blue stuff but they all do the same thing.

love the video tutorial, just curious, what song did you use?
NemesisWulf 2 years ago
@NemesisWulf The intro music was made by me and the song that kicks in a little after in generated by Sony Cinescore Software.
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
oh I see, I might give that a shot thanks ^^

i like what u did with the base how did u do it
airbrushmaster900 2 years ago
@airbrushmaster900 the base is from youtube user Natakue's online store. The store link is the sponsor at the beginning of the video.
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
@djDavidWolf warhammer 40k is disturbing, so the music should match :)
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
I never had so many people comment and try to tell me better ways to do things lol. But if this tutorial was FAIL I think the ratings would tell me. Thank you for all your input.
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
Why would you not use the air brush for the black as well?
Grifftrogg 2 years ago
@Grifftrogg issue already addressed. It was done because a small percentage of gamers have access to one. And believe it or not, people like to see every process, even base coating. I've done it in all my videos with a brush.
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
Looking good, Les! Just on time, too, as I'm planning on painting up some Raven Guard soon.

I like your old logo better...
do you still go by your old slogan?
"get serious, paint your stuff!" that's a great slogan, if you publish a "how to paint book" that can be it's title
kocky13 2 years ago
if the base color for black templars is going to be chaos black then why not just prime them with chaos black
wakcedout 2 years ago
@wakcedout primer is different than paint. Primer absorbs while dry paint does not. I could have airbrushed the black on but I have always hand painted the colors in these SM tutorials.
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
what about astronomican grey (foundation), its preety bright ( I even use is AS white and after my black washes I just do highlights on detail with skull white . ( sits realy well)
Kapelannew 2 years ago
@Kapelannew I don't use GW paints so no foundation paints. GW names are used because it's more familiar.
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
damn you can just watch your vids for great music
Kapelannew 2 years ago
i would just drybrush him a mix of chaos black and shadow grey at the beggining, give him battle grey, codex grey, fortress gray, and finally skull white for the shoulders.
Altier215 2 years ago
@Altier215 yikes! Dry brushing a space marine?!?! Well, if it makes you happy :)
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
Love your tutorials but does your vid camera have a manual focus setting instead of autofocus? If you set to manual focus it wouldn't blur every time you move your hands to adjust the view of the model.
jimmy151791 2 years ago
@jimmy151791 it does but my hand is constantly moving the model so manual focus would NOT be ideal.
awesomepaintjob 2 years ago
Does it also have a manual f-stop? If you used a smaller aperture you could set a fixed focus and even with movement it would be in focus almost all the time. Most of the new digital cams don't have manual f-stops though so your probably right.
jimmy151791 2 years ago
You mentioned NMM, thats something I'm trying to start experimenting with. Have you ever done it? I'd love to see a vid if you have :D
graefx 2 years ago
YES! Finally. Thanks so much man. I've painted so many of these and I still can't get them to look good. This will help a lot!
