  • Very helpful, its on P.Shop!

  • YOu should be an instructor cuz you explained it very well... thanks! Great Tutorial

  • 30 seconds watching this tutorial solved the problem I had trouble with. <3

  • @MCxx12 Thank you, I'll check it out! :)

  • This fu*king video just eliminated the need to smash my head against the wall in frustration. Cower in fear, pen tool...I OWN YOU.

  • @Dfxcc Ok, thank you so much! I'll try to look for it as well

    Gabi

  • Gotta love the Batman-reference!

  • @Dfxcc Can you then please send me a tutorial to what you think works best? Thanks

  • That;s the most helpful thing I've watched in months! I've been using Photoshop for more than 4 years, I'm learning I''m supposed to use the pen tool (the right way) just now!

    Thank you!!

  • indeed i'm noob. :D so, where can i find the RIGHT method? and how would i know if it's the right one? i mean would you tell me what's wrong with his method?

  • @cudxc well, seems like i've been missing your detailed responses. will definitely check your video later. thanks.

  • i hear a typewriter not a keyboard lol! hahaha

  • this simple tutorial is superb!

  • ehh Im still CONFUUUSED

  • @GxTT4 I'm not sure I understand, with two points, all I can really make is half a circle at best, unless there is some technique for duplicating paths/points that I'm not aware of. The Alt Clicking thing did help though.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT ALT CLICKING ADVICE. I HAD BEEN DOING THE PEN TOOL ALL THIS TIME WITHOUT KNOWING THAT AND IT WAS SO FRUSTRATING.

  • @cbbstax what? im confused...

  • THANKYOU

  • This changed my LIFE.

  • Guys,,Guys! it's nt his keyboard or typewriter or so! he just forgot to disable the option of clicking and typing in the recording prog!! ticky tickk-tickk !:D

  • Thanks for the tut, really helped with my band's logo

  • I'm dying laughing. I read the typewriter comments, but it SERIOUSLY sounds JUST like an old typewriter.

  • the alt trick is amazing

  • You say the pen tool can't draw an arc of more than 90 degrees. That is incorrect. If you understand how to use it, you can draw an arc around half a circle using just two anchor points.

  • The sounds of the clicking and your voice are soothing...makes me drowzy, plus you have good grammer(:

  • LoL for the 1st 20seconds.

  • Am I the only one who watched him trace the entire fire digital drawing? Ha ha, helpful vid!

  • Love sound of the mouse click and the keyboard. Sounds like a typewriter

  • That keyboard is so awesome, I want one like this too :3

  • thank u soooo much....

  • good video man. btw are you using a mech keyboard? lol

  • oh my goodness! this makes my life SO MUCH EASIER!! YOU'RE LIKE JESUS!! or something like that.... I would always start up photoshop and be all confident and be like today is the day I learn how to use the pen tool!! And then... about 30 seconds of trying to figure the damn thing out I would have to leave the room entirely so I didn't throw my laptop out the window. BUT NOW I SEE A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

  • 'k, that was useful

  • Are you kidding? The pen tool is my FAVORITE TOOL EVER.

  • the bit with the alt button saved my life

  • @bellaluna423 You do know that the guy is in the video doesn't know how to use the pen tool, right?

  • @vlptr Well, he knew more than me at the time. But then i watched a better video, and now i understand the real way to use it.

but you cant criticize if you don't know better, and i didn't know better :)

  • @whoopsidaisi Why are you replying to me, when I never replied to you?

  • this suck... btw stop try to be funny...

  • It's very sad if someone like the one who made this video is educating people how to use the pen tool, when he obviously he has no clue how to use it himself.

  • Thanks for the video, the automatic curve thing was driving me crazy.

  • Thanks! this video helped my a lot, since i take computer classes and learning about photoshop. :D i just cant understand when MY teacher is teaching...

  • Best pen tool tutorial I've found! Those " three reasons to place an anchor point" is the best thing to remember! This is going to make my homework easier

  • @AlienXCherie "Best pen tool tutorial I've found! "

No, it's not, he teaches it completely the wrong way. One example; he claims at 1:00 that you can't go further than 90 degrees. Wrong, two anchor points allow you to go 180 degrees. The reason why he can't get 180 degrees is because he only PLACED the first anchor point, instead of placing AND pulling it at the same time.

  • your keyboard sounds like an old school typewriter dude..but thanks anyway.peace!

  • @mahalaycore So? Its a mechanical...

  • @mahalaycore I was just gonna say the same! Thumbs up at your comment either way.

  • i have a problem with this pen tool when i press the strock path and simulate pressure

the edges arent sharpend they stay rounded

    any help????

  • I have significantly less trouble than before!

  • @titaniumpenknife You do know that he has no clue how the pen tool works, right? He teaches you the wrong way, one that is also more time consuming. Example: he draws a circle with 4 points, when only 2 points are needed.

  • YEEEESSS!!!! I CAN WIN, I CAN WIN, I CAN DO THIIIIS!!!!!

  • @coldblood274 -.-

  • @kymani37299 Hasnt anyone seen the episode of Dragonball Z where Piccolo fuses with Nail??? O.o

  • Very very good tutorial. Beautifully explained and demonstrated. Thank you.

  • @Neodarkyuubi Actually what he has no clue how the pen tool works and teaches you completely the wrong way.

  • This is the best tutorial on the pen tool ...... I have come across many ps books, magazines and youtube tutorials on the pen tube, guess what ........ I never got it. But this one is bull's eye. You have illustrated a simple way of using the pen tool WITH AMPLE EXAMPLES within the tutorial. This greatly reinforces the 'routine' of click, drag, alt-click ......click, drag, alt-click into my head. Now I got it. Simply superb. Now I can tell people I can trace an object with the pen tool. BIG THX.

  • @johnchandermalon No it's not, it's the worst pen tool tutorial on YouTube, the guy totally has no clue how the pen tool works and I'm even willing to explain it to you if you have the time.

  • Thanks a lot, bro. The dual handle thing was confusing the hell out of me. Now it's as easy as using bezier curves in any other program.

  • sounds like a typewriter

  • FUCK U U ASS, DIDN'T HELP ME AT ALL

  • f.....in..., it is so simple when someone can explain it.

    thanks

  • Amazing tutorial, great job.

  • This is the best Photoshop PENTOOL tutorial I've seen to date. THANK YOU SIR!!!

  • I love you man!!!! :-)

  • Omg this is what I needed. It's just that I'm used to illustrator. And in illustrator you don't have to hold the Alt-button. Thnx so much for this lesson ;)

  • Sound like Owen Wilson lol

  • Thank you so much dude!!!!

  • AAA-IT'S A PAANN TOOOL :O

  • Yeah thanks , I don't even know how tog et to that menu! T.T

  • awesome. I've seen the pen tool alot in action and never exactly knew how to use it and jsut lazy to use it-.- I mainly do interface designing so.... it sucks.

the shapes are the biggest problem:D

  • Haha... Sounds like your using a typewriter for a keyboard! Good tutorial though

  • very helpful

  • Clueless never read the manual to learn what alt-click is supposed to do, and why he doesn't need to be wasting time with it!

  • Thank you for not forcing us to watch a f**kin 30 second ad before the instructional video.

  • omg thanks man you complete explained it!!!

  • Cheers dude, my eyes wer getting tired of reading....your video was enlightening and much better than readin.

  • Thanks so much! This helped me out LOADS. I never knew about the Alt key functionality.. Now I'm a vectoring machine!

  • @redan499 "Now I'm a vectoring machine!"

I sure hope that you don't use vectors the way the guy in this video uses them... lol... what a clown!

  • Thanks a lot! You are a saviorrr I had no idea how to select/stroke paths! It would have saved me alot of trouble if I had known about that ... = =

  • thanks sooo much!

  • OH! THE "ALT" button... I'd heard the ALL button... or even the OLD button...!!

  • you kindA stuck me as a goof upon first impression from your video but you seem like a good guy and this video taught me the pen tool so thanks a lot man nice work

  • thanx dude .. the automatic curving part got a lil' frustating..

  • thanks man i was actually looking for a good tutorial and I remember seeing this a long time ago and i finally found it!!! thanks best on youtube

  • Oh God ! Thank you so much :)

  • thank you for the vid

  • What version of Photoshop was this? I've been trying to look for Photoshop that has Pen tool AND is compatible with Windows 7 so....yeah. If you could reply, I would be very appreciative!

  • This vid really helped me. Thanks!

  • This pen tool tutorial contains numerous errors and sadly beginners are completely taught the wrong information without even knowing it.

  • @BirnsS Why whats wrong with it? (yes I am a beginner)

  • @tramatiser

EVERYTHING is wrong with it! If you're seriously interested, I will upload a video that shows exactly all his major mistakes. You'll be shocked, I can guarantee you! It's not without a reason that I get close to 2 million visitors on my graphic design site, because unlike this guy I know what I'm talking about.

  • @BirnsS

actually that would be nice. Since I am a beginner I would like to know what I am supposed to do.

  • @tramatiser

It already starts with this first example, the yellow circle. Watch it and then come back. He claims you can't do more than 90 degrees. That's because he doesn't know how the tool works. The maximum is actually 180. Why can he do only 90? Because when he starts, he only clicks once to place the first anchor point. By doing that he creates an anchor point without handles. So how to do it the right way?

  • The right way is to click at the top of the circle and NOT to release the mouse button, but first moving the mouse cursor to the right, which creates a handle. Release the mouse button when the handle is slightly wider than the circle. Then go to the bottom, click, hold the mouse button, move the cursor to the left to create a handle and release the mouse button if you have a nice curve. You have now created a 180 degrees curve that covers half the circle, something he claimed was impossible.

  • Repeat the process by repeating step 1, the part in which you created your first anchor point. You have now created a perfect circle with only 3 anchor points, while his incorrect method required 5. You can adjust the length of the handles, their direction or the location of the anchor points with the direct selection tool. You can select that tool in the toolbar, but a quicker method is to hold the control key with the pen tool still active.

  • Correction, to be precise, you need only 2 anchor points to create a circle, because your third anchor point is not a new anchor point, but just connecting your path to the first one.

As for the next part...the red circles and him blaming Adobe, when he should be blaming himself for not understanding how to use the tools....tsk, tsk, tsk.... the guy should be ashamed.

  • @BirnsS

Thanks, that should help me make the process faster.

  • thanks!

  • GREAT!

    Thank you very much :)

  • a simple and clear tutorial. Thanks.

  • Thanx for the clear and simple tutorial! Very helpful!!

  • Thank you so so so much

  • that alt-command feature was not properly explained in any other video i've seen 5/5

  • Hey. I speak french so I don't know how to explain what i wanna say.. Let me open google translator xD

    here's google's translation :

When I use the pen tool in photoshop cs3, I can not remove the dots to make the shape when I finished making it. The points are still there! AAAAAAAAH !!!

    --

I'm one of the people that are scared of that @#$%?&* pen tool !

    HELLPP!!!

    Sorry for bad english x)

  • @FranciSteph dude i have the same prob with making shapes, i cant see a thing, couse there like a white or black color covering everything

  • Thanks a lot ! Until now I couldn't figure it out going through the manuals several times!!!

  • Thank you so much for this video. Even though this video was made years ago, the tips in it were a revelation to me!

  • thank you

  • my friend's mom worked in adobe :) and my uncle works in microsoft

  • is your keyboard a typewriter? is sounds so noisy? but nice tutorial anyway

  • Copy cat

  • dude, thanks...You tube is awesome for learning stuff...

  • ...if it wasn't for the fact that the tutorial contains huge mistakes...

  • Man youtube is great, i wouldn't figure this out on my own for the next ten years :)

  • thanks

  • thanks but didnt help at all.

  • I'm not surprised, the tutorial contains several huge mistakes, the author doesn't know how to use Photoshop properly.

  • @pswft10

funny though :p you are saying that the -producer- (not author) doesn't know how to use photoshop, and say he made several huge mistakes, but don't tell what they are :p

  • Awesome, thanks, this really helped

  • I never knew the importance of the ALT key before this... so relieved now.. thanks!

  • What do i do after using the pen tool? It disappears If i click on the brush tool?

  • convert it to selection

  • do you have an old type writer sound effect on the return button.......its so fn lame man..turned off at 3min...way toooanoying

  • nice... i dont have anny problems right now... YOUR THE MAN!

  • @MasterRealityChief *You're

  • I always had trouble with the handles, and now I got it! thanks a LOT!

  • Words cannot describe how much this video helped me.

  • that helped me [2]

  • Thank you, that helped me.

  • Sweet! I have been working with Photoshop since version 3 somewhere in the mid 90s, and I still use it till this very day for my work. I have always avoided the damn pen tool. See how much a 6 minute tutorial can make a difference. The alt-key was the key for me too (no pun intended).

  • Great Video, thank you, I needed that alt.

  • Yes, I see you can produce a path but...then what do you do with the path? Can it be filled in? Can you create an outline with it?

A bit of an incomplete tutorial for someone who does not know what the pen tool is used for...you never say what it's ultimate usefulness is, other than creating paths.

  • to create line: Right click on path while pentool is selected, and click on stoke path. Just if you didn't know XD

  • not very clear. as the pen tool is hardly visible. you should consider changing colour so that it is more obvious. also should zoom in.

  • why does the inside turn black when i use it?!

  • yeah mine too, it fills up inside and i cant see what im doing.

  • i found it out...when you use the pen tool at the top under image there are 3 different types...shapes, paths, and fill...click on the paths so it doesnt fill up the inside

  • yes, i just found that out too afterwards when i look for another tutorial about pen tool lol!

  • wtf idnt get it

  • thnks it helped me.......

  • This was a waste of 5mins 59 seconds

  • Thank you for the tutorial! Now I'm one step closer to getting rid of my pen-phobia...

  • Thanks for such a great tutorial! I'm excited to try this out. It gave me a nice base understanding of how to do things. And, contrary to what some others have said, all the loud clicking was nice because then we knew when you were clicking another button;-) Thanks so much. I hope to be a PS Ninja soon.

  • :) i remember watching this video years ago not knowing how to use the pen tool. This video taught me how and i LOVEEE the pen tool now.

  • CHUPUCABRA!!!!
