I will start off by saying I am from Canada .. I met a girl on the net from Detroit city ... alas we broke up .. My Band ( Southern Tear ) was playing one night and my lead singer broke out into this song .. He turned to me and said " this is what you get for almost folding the band " I laughed so hard I had years coming down my leg lol .... Cheers Bobby .. Great song !
every time i hear an old hillbilly song like this it cures my erectile disfunction then i have a wet dream or i wet myself . i was educated at penn state or was it the state penn ??? i go to bed with ben gay then i wake up with arthur-itis . ha ha ...
Everytime I here this song I think of my grandpa and how he would sing this song when i was a kid. Years Later i asked him why he always sang this song, he look at me and siad, " I wanna go home " lol he ment back to Arkansas. He currently lives in a city 10 minutes south of Detroit.
This was the greatest country song of it's generation for me. Well written, well performed...everything about it from the guitar chords to the backing singers does it for me every time.
I personally think this song is about an unhappy farm boy who went to the city to find work, and even though he was able to do so, he didn't like it, and was "dreaming about those cotton fields back home." I kept thinking of this song when I was in Eastern Washington for 21 months (I'm originally from Western Washington). It's just that great. Thanks for posting this.
@joshuabrooks21 you have it correct. he was a farm boy? or just a boy from the middle america where thing go better. he didn't like the rat race he got himself into, and just wanted to go back home. do you mean washington state by western washington. then eastern washington must mean out capitol. i have heard that things there are pretty expensive. had a niece that lived there for a year and then went back to oregon
@joshuabrooks21 we had a cold winter but i hope that spring is on its way. hope where you live you are not getting any big waves do to the earthquake in Japan. you take care and be happy
@rosemarie443 I live about 100 miles away from the Pacific Ocean. The rivers around my hometown did budge nair an inch. The only thing that's causing them to rise is the persistent rain we've experienced over the last few days. The good thing is, there's a light at the end of this dismal tunnel. I wish you well my friend!
This is a cool song. I'm not much of a country music lover (prefer classic rock) but this song brings back a lot of memories. I great up in Detroit and I new of southern "folks" who had come up to detroit. Historically many southerners came to work in auto and other types of factories in detroit.
I'm 15. Most people my age say, "I like all music except country." Bobby Bare, Johnny Cash, and Patsy Cline are the reasons why I don't ever say that.
so is he saying how he misses Detroit or is he saying how he misses his home in the "cotton field",because there are no cotton fields here in Detroit,MI
Seriously only a white dude would sing about sleeping in Detroit and dreaming of cotton fields back home. Ugh. I grew up in the country and it sucks. I would still rather live here, even it being how it is at the moment. And why does he have to ride the freight back home? You could probably make a pretty decent wage here back then, and afford a car or at least a bus ticket. What a loser. So boring too.
@arielgirl you heard the song, but you didn't listen, he took a freight to detroit city because he didn't have any money. i grew up in the country also, and it wasn't good but i have lived thru worse. no unless you were in the union, which was not to big back then you didn't make a good living, and he spent all of his money in bars. if this is boring why did you listen?????????????????
@KryptoniteTearDrop he is saying that he misses home. that he made a mistake in leaving. because there is no place like home where people are supposed to love and help you
Very true...you say country now and you get Alan jackson, Garth Brooks, Toby Keith and god knows who else...no disrespect to them but it's not country...this stuff is the real country...most people today have no idea who Bobby Bare is...unfortunately real country music for now is a thing of the past
This was back in the days when country was real country. I remember watching the Johnny Cash Show and how we all liked the part "Come Along and Ride This Train" I was lucky and got to see Johnny Cast two times in concert. I never got to see Bobby Bare live but I always loved his music
@Navigator1790 I saw him in Oklahoma City in the early 80's at a bar I was working at. It was one of the best concerts I ever saw! He's a great talent ! Long live Bobby Bare !

It was great to hear Bobby sing "I love you drops" at Bill Anderson's 50th anniversary celebration. Truly stole the night for me with that song.
