  • I've loved this song since I was a kid and listening to Steve on 8-tracks in the '74 Suburban with my family cruising the mountains of Colorado. And I know for a fact Steve is breast flexing like a madman when he plays the banjo. We just can't see it under his shirt.

  • I wish to second the motion by paddypump1 that "breast flexing" be an Olympic sport. This is an excellent suggestion and should receive all the attention it is due. ( not the Olympic sport suggestion but the breast flexing should get all the attention. It has mine).

(BTW the music was real nice Steve)

  • Shut up about the breast flexing video.

  • hearing the guitar join in just made shivers run up my spine! Steve Way TO GO

  • It's really great. Steve if you ever get the chance try playing a CloverLick clawhammer banjo you should. You'd love it and get a little more old timey sound; not that this doesn't sound absolutely great of course.

  • breast flexing should be an olympic sport

  • I wish they had a "I love this button!"

  • Why does that "breast flexing" video appear on nearly every banjo-related page?

  • @dorseyharrington

cuz us good ol boys like us some homegrown natural titties

  • Amazing! Love the clawhammer style. Steve seems to be a clear natural on that banjo!

  • Why is this dude so awesome?!

  • From about 1:15 it sounds like 'On the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond'. Any Scotsman agree? Otherwise, a great melody!

  • @granitePillar it is

  • Is "Clawhammer Medley" the actual name of this tune?

  • @jillgivler yes it is. its a medley of four songs, sally ann then hardy boys then simple gifts then loch lomond.

  • @banjotuna I thought I heard Loch Lomond in there! I'll be getting this album. Thanks for the answer! :-)

  • This is beautiful - but what's the name of this song? I see the album name but no name for this tune.

  • He's a ramblin' guy!

  • @joesmoe71 a-ramble-ee-a-eye-ennn . . .

  • LOL @bolkovr1

  • one word....RESPECT!

  • this is one of the oldest styles of banjo playing. i'm glad steve sees the beauty of it. this is real americana.

  • Why not try this... bring up You Tube twice, listen to Steve and his great banjo picking whilst AT THE SAME TIME watching the lovely lady doing her talented skills with her amazing chest. Which reminds me, I must get a chicken for sunday dinner

  • No disrespectualization for mr stephen martinez, but.....

Me too for the Breast Flexing video :)

He does have a nice wrist angle in the pic for 3 finger though!

  • I think he needs a Nechville Moonshine open back!! I'll personally make it!!

  • @deadstrings77

I agree on the model of banjo, but somehow I suspect he has a pretty nice open-back or two !

  • @deadstrings77

Just bought an old Buckbee myself.

  • I never get bored of listening to this...

  • this is "tis the gift" isn't it?

  • Clawhammer is the best style of Banjo, in my opinion. I think its got the best sound and is very fun to play but bluegrass is okay, I still have trouble doing it.

  • @ thehipi: 'Tis the gift to be simple -tis the gift to be free;'tis the gift to turn 'round where we ought to be, etc. "Simplicity" (old English hymn made popular by Judy Collins)...along with some Irish/scottish ballad stuff... :-) Terrific medly by another true Master.

  • @bolkovr1 that shit was hilarious !!!

  • Comment removed

  • I recognize this melody but can't place it - anybody else remember the name of the tune?

  • @thehipi The wild rover on the muddy muddy banks of Loch Loooomoooon? ;)

  • @thehipi Sally Ann and Simple Gifts.

  • Self - taught. The man is pure genius.

  • melodic bliss :]

  • This puts me in dire need of a campfire.

  • @Grimmloch Funny, Im the same way. When I hear music like this it transports me beneath a tree beside a lake surrounded by mountains on a bright sunny day.

  • Why is "Breast Flexing" a related video to this?

  • @TomClothier

That is what i would like to know but, i know you clicked on it to lol.

  • Comment removed

  • @TomClothier Orange Bosum Special I suppose...

  • Awesome!!!!

  • i wish there were more clawhammer song by steve.

  • i love this damn banjo sound thank u steve

  • Its not the banjo my friend, it is the music that comes out of it, where that music was born, raised, and honed. That's the beauty of it...in my opinion...

  • Massive talent with perfect detail!

  • what a toe-tappin tune yee-haw!

  • After watching his new banjo concert videos I can only think how gratifying he must feel knowing his music and humor can make 10's of thousands of people happy, at one time, just being on stage. The crowd knows he loves what he does and a smile crosses many a face. He shares it with the world to give everyone some great times. Thanks Steve for loving the "arts" side of life.

  • This is good, but I think I'm going to click on that "Breast Flexing" video on the right.

  • @bolkovr1

That's a funny comment. Seriously. 945,000 viewers can't be wrong!!

But love the clawhammer banjo featuring Steve. I believe I haven't heard him play that style before.

    Thanks for the post raymo956.

  • @bolkovr1

You made me laugh out loud -- thanks!

    :)

  • @bolkovr1 Cheers for the heads-up, bud :D

  • @bolkovr1 Hmm, the banjo playing is better... She would have some trouble with it.

  • @bolkovr1 good call. im going to open it in a seperate window! lol

  • @bolkovr1 lol too funny. but it really is good. never would have thought. Good ol app mountain music. Kennnnnnttttttttuuuuuuccky

  • @bolkovr1 lol come'on man, i'm trying to get through this whole vid first. Your comment isnt helping

  • @bolkovr1 Why IS that damn breast flexing video on every page I go to? My youtube search engine is a pervert!.....oh wait...it's me.

  • I'd have never been so mesmorized by an instrument like I was when I heard Steve Martin banjo in his movie 'A Simple Twist of Fate'. I loved it so much, thank you

  • Keep up the awesome work!

  • He's awesome and the funny thing is he held his talent back. He never tried to overwhelm people. Hell I didn't even know he could play until I loved his act for just him! LOL He must be an extraordinary guy to know.

  • He always clowned with a banjo, i did not know he was a serious artist. This dude is A-W-E-S-O=M-E. seen him on letterman with earl scruggs and friends, i am right now, exploring his talent on you tube.

  • Steve Martin is a part of the American fabric. He is able to make the world laugh with him, while keeping the jokes upbeat and inoffensive. Keep on keeping on Mr. Martin!

  • Yeah there's just something about banjo music, I've been playin' it for 57 years. Eventhough I make my livin' on the Blues, I've always been addicted to banjo. If you like Delta Blues check out Bryan Warhall on Youtube. Love ya Steve.

  • Great clawhammer banjo. Thanks.

  • Great playing.

Such a shame that Steve is so tragically vain that he has submitted himself to all that ridiculous cosmetic surgery.

  • @cpome7 Dumbo. He depends on his looks for his living. He doesn't want Boris Karloff parts.

  • SO PERRTY!

  • I love this album, but this is probably my favorite piece on it. This kind of playing is what inspired me to learn to play banjo (though I'm just a beginner, having waited so long to start). I wish Steve was my neighbor :-)

  • It makes you miss everything you passed, people you love that you never gonna see them again. Places you traveled. And oh it makes my heart beat more. Love it, and we love you Steve. Good job.

  • Life is blissful....

  • Ahh!!! Why can't this be 30 minutes long!

  • It does haunt you...much like the bagpipes,u never get the sound of your head..it is true classcal music

  • You can find this on Amazon. Excellent cd.

  • What's the name of this tune. Love it. Something about this kind of music that makes people smile and tap their foot!

  • @tipsanders It is actually called "Clawhammer Medley" this version, it's on "the crow" album. :)

  • Steve,

You play a really natural style of Old Time banjo. It's great and I for one, thank you for years of joy via your movies and banjo playing...Jack Baker NYC

  • Has anyone ever seen an unhappy banjo player?

  • @dharmaseed Only those crying of joy.

  • I have always loved Steve Martin as a great comedian and actor. I'm Hispanic i know nothing about he banjo but after listening to Mr Martin play it, i think I'm hooked !! Thank You for the post..

  • I did enjoy, indeed. Thanks for sharing. Just bought the album on iTunes.

  • Nice work Steve.

  • I Admire Steve Martin. The Banjo is really a wonderful instrument. Martin has great command and skill in interpreting musical expression. I love his album "The Crow". Very talented person. God Bless.

  • I've always loved Steve's work and this made me appreciate it a little bit more :)

  • I am always amazed watching a clawhammer player - the music seems to have a magic complexity.

BTW - love this album - bought it almost as soon as it came out.

  • bless you navin im brining out a thermos for you...

  • bless you navin

  • Much respect Mr Martin!

  • Steve's right about one thing though... it's almost impossible to make a banjo sound sad.

  • Steve Martin...one of the good guys.

  • WOW, that was beautiful!!

  • Ive loved Steve Martin as a comedian for so long... and now i have so much more respect for him as a musician, ive truly been inspired

  • When you have as much talent as he does I think music soothes his soul.WC

  • Thank you steve martin for making the CD and letting us hear your good music. I hope some day that you can come to kentucky and play at some festivals Here.

  • The funny thing about a banjo it haunts you. Once you`ve been properly introduced it never leaves you alone. It is a very jealous lover! I first saw Mr Martin doing magic in Disneyland, I believe. I first saw him playing with Mason Williams, I think.

  • @MrAckwood You saw him when he was working in the magic shop? What a thing to see. Very cool.

  • @MrAckwood I like your imagery, about the haunting and the jealous lover. This is very true.

  • @MrAckwood that is so true. I am a guitar player who picked up a banjo one and fooled around with it one summer. it has haunted me. next time I find myself at home I am going to learn how to play that thing.

  • @MrAckwood So true.

  • The funny thing about a banjo it haunts you. Once you`ve been properly introduced it never leaves you alone. It is a very jealous lover! I first saw Mr Martin doing magic in Disneyland, I believe.

  • Helps the heart. :) Thanks for posting this lovely thing.

    Songsmirth

  • Didn't know Steve could play, he is damn good.

  • @illustriouschin He started out having it a part of his act. I always waited for him to put the arrow on. lol :) Meant he was going to play. Yes, he's wonderful. I think he plays the guitar as well. In my vague memory, I think I saw him with one. Anyone remember?

  • I live in Hanford, California an no one here seems to know what I`m doing. They don`t even have a music store in this county. A man has a guitar repair shop and doesn`t have anything to do with banjos.. You might go to the local pawn shops. Never been able to figure that one out. I learned to do three finger a few years ago and switched over. I am from the Appalachians , 12 years ago. You do us proud!

  • this makes me feel all nostalgic and home-sick ... and I'm not even from Appalachia. :P

  • Beautiful music....

  • What a talent!

Just Love to hear the banjo played correctly.

  • I'm so glad Steve has picked up the banjo again.

  • Comment removed

  • My buddy has this album. I never got to hear it in entirety. Very good stuff I must admit. Clawhammer banjo is something that you don't always get to hear a whole lot of, and Mr. Martin does an excellent job. He definitely has captured the beauty of the instrument.

  • @SkywalkerClone35 Do you know the name of the album please?

  • @Songsmirth The album is called "The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo". Sorry it took so long to reply.

  • @SkywalkerClone35 No problem. Thanks Sky! I love these banjos. I wish that we in education could promote banjos but it 's not the norm. Sadly. My father played a four string banjo. This is a nice piece. Too bad Steve Martin couldn't make millions playing! At least he could get people to listen to him when he did his comedic bit. The banjo players I've know got addicted early! lol Wish I had the talent.

  • @Songsmirth Yes, you know the old joke then. Q: What's the least-heard phrase ever in the English language? A: "Hey, isn't that the banjo player's Porsche?" But seriously though, such a fountain of sonic joy deserves to be more rewarded.

  • @barscotch lol and ha. Good one. :) And I agree. Wish more of our kids could be exposed to banjos and the talented ones who play them. I give it my best. :) Songs

  • @barscotch I laughed out loud at that one. Then I got on my bike and rode away... Well, I do have a Subaru somewhere....

  • Amazing

  • Its good , innit!

  • BUY THIS ALBUM! Its really good! I drank orange cream soda on the front porch to it all summer....

  • I had no idea he played. I'm sitting here stunned. This is beautiful. :)

  • perfect melody compilation. sums up the old, secluded south.

  • beautifull

  • mighty fine album!

  • Thanks for posting this great tune!

  • Tuning is in D. Starting with the 5th string it is A D F(sharp) A D. First tune the 3rd string to match the 4th string at the 4th fret. Next tune the 2nd string the match the 5th string at the 7th fret. Last tune the 5th string to match the 2nd string. That's it.

  • It's one of my favorite versions of this I have ever heard. Country rocks but bluegrass rules!

  • @SkaggsandBacon This is clawhammer I 'm not really sure but i don't think it's either Bluegrass or country..maybe it's both..i like to call it old timey

  • The name of the tune is "Sally Anne" Its just played a lot slower than normal. I like it slow.

  • No, this is mainly Loch Lomond and Legend of the Johnson Boys. Sally Anne is thrown in there a little bit, but it's mainly a medley with Loch Lomond, Johnson Boys, and Simple Gifts.

  • This is a slower version of Drop Thumb Medley Loch Lomond Sally Anne.

    /watch?v=l31MSpojWTA&

  • Is this the same tune that Steve played on his "Seriously Funny" show on TV? I've been unsuccessfully trying to find the name of that tune which he was playing while on the couch in his living room. This sounds like it but I'm not sure. Simple song, beautifully played.

  • I love this song. I think I heard it when he originally played it on stage by himself. Still as powerful as the first :)
