Great dialogue, superb acting. Not like the superficial crap that's out now with cardboard actors and juvenile writing. These guys had almost no budget and made it happen. The claustrophobic atmosphere amps up the Cold War tension even more. Today's young generation couldn't even sit through five minutes of Callan. They're too used to the 80lb chick karate kung fuing some 6'5" gangbanger while she holds a 357 Magnum on him the size of her 20 inch waist. God Bless Edward Woodward.
I was lucky enough to know Edward as a friend for over twenty years. I have spoken a few words about what it was like to know the real man and what he taught me. You can see it on my page in two parts as "So You Want To Know The Rich And Famous......?" It's very thought provoking!
Can anyone remember EW playing a comedy role in a series about a removal firm? He was the gaffer I remember, or maybe I don't really remember and I've got it all wrong. This would have been 1990s I think. I loved Callan though.
@damuzzdu I agree totally - I think the partnership of Woodward with Russell Hunter was one of the best combinations to hit our TV screens and yet hardly got a mention after his passing. A sad loss of a terrific actor - RIP great man.
I was born in 68 and one of the very first 'TV' moments i could remember was that theme tune and the bulb... the explosion haunted my dreams and stayed with me, the entire title sequence with the glowing letters fading in and out was utterly fascinating as a child to me, TV or rather the rented faux-wooden box which hummed gave me such insight into a weird new world, i love those memories dearly and as a by product gave me an imagination which i use to wank my mind with.
I just discovered Callan a few days a go, when I had walk my local Video Store to return the last ones I had rented, when I noticed the Box set for the first time. Right then I felt I had discovered a gem. Like all the TV shows around the late sixties and the beginning of the early seventies, I admire the atmospheric tone they have. I was born in 1967 and cant help but feel dawn to the psychological dept of this TV show. Plus the theme reminds me of Portishead.
Woodward would have made a fantastic James Bond. Anyone who thinks otherwise should take a look at Daniel Craig, who is essentially Woodward after weight-training.
funny but true story about when the character was first written, it was a discussion between the writer and producer before making the first ever episode;
Edward Woodward learnt his hardman trade here before using it to full, blistering effect in the Equalizer. Hes been the blueprint for every tough guy since, but has never been bettered. Fantastic.
Actually, it's not a man's name. It's most often a surname. As a first name it is gender neutral though it is interesting to note that Callan means "strong woman in battle".
So you're the dickhead "lachlan2345". In your face.
I was named after this series.

I think the series you're talking about is "Common as Muck". It was a group of Dustbinmen not removal men.

RIP Edward Woodward.
I recall watching the great TV series in late 60's and was overjoyed to watch it again last year on Pay TV.
His acting was first class and the many scenes with Russell Hunter "Lonely" will long be remembered.
Edward was the classic actor to play Breaker Morant...and I could not imagine any one else playing "The Breaker".
