This is awonderful rendition. And people who feel free to use dirty language for describing this exceptional performance shoud be ashamed of themselves!
I'm really tired of reading theses incompetent comments. Could you keep these offensive remarks to yourself, or have you ever tried to play the violin yourself? Certainly not because then you would feel more humility!!!
@LeopoldAuer You sir, are a major dick. I challenge you to play with even half of Ray's musicality and intonation. Also, I hear much jealousy in the mentioning of Aaron Rosand. Are you jealous that you didn't make it to Curtis?
Just went to his concert in HK tonight. He played Tchaikovsky's concerto. It's so nice. Maybe he's not yet fully matured at his age (22 yr old now), his musical career is promising and infinitive.
@dziady1 i know by experience that it's impossible to produce such a sound without some sort of emotional investment. I don't think you understand what you're talking about. His phrasing is excellent, his "tone production" as well. His vibrato varies, the pressure and speed of his bow changes in different passages... I see a tremendous amount of interpretation. It's hard not to know much about tone production when you've played long enough to be able to perform this piece.
@Marsplasticwoman You're right. I play this right now, but I cannot produce the style necessary of such a true virtuosic violin piece. Such beauty would take endless practice in order to achieve such a level of interpretation.
I was listening to the great Heifetz when I saw this video has 60K hits and nobody has heard of Ray Chen. What sensitive and profound playing, and most surprisingly it was coming from a 20 yr old. The piano accompaniment is superb, nice rythmic, and good balancin. It's actually incredibly exciting and delightful to hear the two play. And lastly, I like this version better than Heifetz.
@theviolinchannel Mr. Rosand told me that he is playing a modern German maker's violin now most of the time and he love the German violin sound. He doesn't play those two Strad much actually...
really i wanna hold my violin without a shoulder rest like this guy , but i don't know what else to put in order to feel comfortable and relaxed and not holding it with the left hand lol if anyone knows please inform me !!
@violonistchris The beginning is a little bit painful, and you will feel tension, because it changes the way you are holding the violin. But all you need is to respect your own body until you get used to it. One thing you can do is be with your shoulders totally rested, and the violin in the right hand. Hold your violin in the lower right side (the side that doesn't have chin rest) take the violin your chin, then hold it with your left hand, and just let it fell to the position
I saw him last weekend and he is just great as a person, very humble and as a violinist is great and will one of the greatest of this century. He is fluent on his fingers and the stradivarius 1721 MacMillan get better on him and his soul on his performance.A privilege for me to be close to him in Puerto Rico.
Same here, It was a privilege for me to sit in the 1st row, right in front of him as he played along with Julien Quentin this August, 2011. Ray is a remarkable violinist and I hope to see him many more times in a live concert
I like how every note is so clean and how the dynamics and intonation are so good. It is obvious that he enjoys playing the violin. I wish that my playing of this piece was as good as this.
This is wonderful. His playing here is very different from the usual approach to this piece...instead of zipping through it as fast as possible, he takes a relaxed tempo and, in a sort of running commentary, brings out the little highlights and asides that are usually lost in what is really a complex and lovely composition. Here is a real musician's musician--and what a joy to listen to!
you guys are sooo lucky! you like classical music, while i listen to junk! (rap) i really wish i didnt like listining to that garbage! now don't give this a thumbs down, do you really think i want to enjoy rap? classical is REAL music, and lots of people are starting to like other things. I DONT WANT TO LIKE RAP!!! why did they have to invent hip-hop? i want to enjoy classical. who here wants to exchange brains with me? no one? EXACTLY!!!
Even through the bad video quality, you can hear the beautiful sweetness of his tone and the absolution of his musical ideas. Mr. Chen is a huge inspiration to me.
1st of all, what I heard was a crystal clear textbook interpretation effortlessly delivered with beautiful sound.
2nd of all, I especially admire the way he handled each note, one by one, without any unnecessary flashyness & superficial stuffs for i.e. just to impress the judges.
Finally, I'm just extremely glad that the judges did appreciate the simple beauty inside this execution (or Ray Chen's style in general) without being overly concerned about...one missed note!
It was amazing! Thank You!
