  • BRAVO, amazing performance!

  • BRAVO, amazing performance

  • Wonderful performance! :DD

  • Good Job Mr. Stephen Chow...!!!

  • wow his fingers are sooo long..!

  • This is awonderful rendition. And people who feel free to use dirty language for describing this exceptional performance shoud be ashamed of themselves!

I'm really tired of reading theses incompetent comments. Could you keep these offensive remarks to yourself, or have you ever tried to play the violin yourself? Certainly not because then you would feel more humility!!!

  • great performance..

  • que interpretação meu deus.que tecnica.uauuuuuuuu

  • he closes his eyes while playing his violin

    impossible!

  • es la onda :D

  • Chen and Jackiw should do a duet. Just saying :))

  • like robocop,no fantasy, good teacher ,but technical player...

  • 8:22 lol

  • ammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzonnnng

  • @LeopoldAuer You sir, are a major dick. I challenge you to play with even half of Ray's musicality and intonation. Also, I hear much jealousy in the mentioning of Aaron Rosand. Are you jealous that you didn't make it to Curtis?

  • He's obviously good, but then again all the finalists there are good. He didn't deserve to win this competition.

  • ray chen is also a lady gaga fan

  • The beat is a bit too slow in the Capriccioso part.

And his face is not peaceful enough...

  • @andrewsun

oh, please! his face is beautiful....shut up and listen to a genius

  • @andrewsun How do you want to hear a tango?I think it's the right beat

  • cool

  • Best performance of rondo capriccioso ! WOW

  • uh oh, missed the harmonic at 3:50

  • he came to my school and performed, KIPP: Adelante

  • Beautiful piece, wonderful performance. Many many thanks!!!!

  • very good player

  • i think i may have a new favorite violinist. he is so flawless and effortless yet so emotional and passionate.

  • the pianist is also awesome~~ :)

  • viper2473 - pointless reponse ..

  • I went to Encore with Ray, he used to be alot bigger. Spent tons of time in the gym. Great guy.

  • i think the facial expressions are weird to me because his eyes are often wide open.

  • @jadeangel2757

Those facial expressions are so wonderful to me, gives himself to the music and in the music....

  • Just went to his concert in HK tonight. He played Tchaikovsky's concerto. It's so nice. Maybe he's not yet fully matured at his age (22 yr old now), his musical career is promising and infinitive.

  • His facial expressions are priceless.

  • @stinkyliar Grow up!

  • @stinkyliar You are an immature little boy.......

  • He is just passable on this tape - does not

seem to know much about tone production or phrasing, certainly knows

where to place fingers but that's about it .

Technician of sorts at best .

  • @dziady1 i know by experience that it's impossible to produce such a sound without some sort of emotional investment. I don't think you understand what you're talking about. His phrasing is excellent, his "tone production" as well. His vibrato varies, the pressure and speed of his bow changes in different passages... I see a tremendous amount of interpretation. It's hard not to know much about tone production when you've played long enough to be able to perform this piece.

  • @Marsplasticwoman You're right. I play this right now, but I cannot produce the style necessary of such a true virtuosic violin piece. Such beauty would take endless practice in order to achieve such a level of interpretation.

  • @dziady1 Next time you win Menuhin and Queen Elisabeth, which are judged by the worlds greatest artists, you let me know.

  • I'm going to see Ray Chen with my class in 8 days !!!!! I still don't believe that he is coming in my town ... OMG I can't wait any longer !

  • A rather exciting performance, but Ray is ultimately forgettable as an artist like countless other competition hounds....

  • @theviolinchannel so what?

  • This is truly a "bravo" performance.

  • I was listening to the great Heifetz when I saw this video has 60K hits and nobody has heard of Ray Chen. What sensitive and profound playing, and most surprisingly it was coming from a 20 yr old. The piano accompaniment is superb, nice rythmic, and good balancin. It's actually incredibly exciting and delightful to hear the two play. And lastly, I like this version better than Heifetz.

  • The pianist here is very good too, good partners. Good choice, Ray!

  • youtube.com/watch?v=aUd2e2A6l7U this is better

  • it was so beatiful that Gods had to listen to your interpretation!! There are no enough words in the world to express such Playing! Yes, Bravo!

  • @18Jana2Marie1899 .................

  • He looks really like Lang lang.

  • proud of you Ray :))))))

  • Wonderful!!!

  • wonderful!!!

  • this is such a sick interpretation goddamn :]

  • I'm taiwanese too ray =) I can play violin too haha

  • Very elegant playing.

  • @theviolinchannel

mmm if he does not know what to do with 2 Stradivarius maybe he should give me one of them LOL

  • perfect he has got talented

  • Wow... I want to play this on flute. :)

  • @theviolinchannel Mr. Rosand told me that he is playing a modern German maker's violin now most of the time and he love the German violin sound. He doesn't play those two Strad much actually...

  • OMG LOOK AT HIS FINGERS!!!!

  • Perfect!!

  • Maravilhooooooooooooosos!!!!!!! Bravíssssssssssimo!!!!!!!!

  • unbelievably sexy. i mean.. talented.

  • Love it!!!!!!!

  • VERY musical, playful, senstive, and skilled!

  • really i wanna hold my violin without a shoulder rest like this guy , but i don't know what else to put in order to feel comfortable and relaxed and not holding it with the left hand lol if anyone knows please inform me !!

  • @violonistchris The beginning is a little bit painful, and you will feel tension, because it changes the way you are holding the violin. But all you need is to respect your own body until you get used to it. One thing you can do is be with your shoulders totally rested, and the violin in the right hand. Hold your violin in the lower right side (the side that doesn't have chin rest) take the violin your chin, then hold it with your left hand, and just let it fell to the position

  • wow, I'm his age and learning this right now...though I can't hope to play it as well as he does T_T

but I have to say my teacher would not approve of his left hand technique lol

I guess it works for him because he has such long and skinny fingers o_o gosh why haven't I ever heard of this guy? he's so eff'n good!

  • I saw him last weekend and he is just great as a person, very humble and as a violinist is great and will one of the greatest of this century. He is fluent on his fingers and the stradivarius 1721 MacMillan get better on him and his soul on his performance.A privilege for me to be close to him in Puerto Rico.

  • @goodyones

Same here, It was a privilege for me to sit in the 1st row, right in front of him as he played along with Julien Quentin this August, 2011. Ray is a remarkable violinist and I hope to see him many more times in a live concert

  • elegant !

  • elegant !

  • so good!

  • I like how every note is so clean and how the dynamics and intonation are so good. It is obvious that he enjoys playing the violin. I wish that my playing of this piece was as good as this.

  • same here!

  • this song is just genius. i think he should have insisted more on 6:30 there? but really. A+ . charming stile and performance

  • He makes the audience curious.

I think the same as @ViolinistAtHeart.

He reminds me Maxim Vengerov a little.

  • Ray Chen is a very talented violinist. I think he will be one of the best among his generation.

  • the bow control!!!

    AMAZING!!!

i love the passion he plays into this piece! the different style, dramatic... drama king :D

and all those fast parts. HIS FINGERS ARE SO FAR FROM THE STRING HOW DO THEY MAKE IT IN TIME?! scary hahah i can't do that

so i'm working on this now.... annnd after seeing this.... i've pretty much given up lol. not really. really inspired actually ^____^

    love love love him!!! <3

  • amazing Chen!!!

  • @eureka... sooo much passion!!! that's a man! :)

  • Wow! Wonderful playing -- I love the facial expressions! :)

  • Hy!!! I like him very much. Which is his violin?

  • @esyrkine "The Macmillan" Stradivarius

  • can i please marry him

  • This is wonderful. His playing here is very different from the usual approach to this piece...instead of zipping through it as fast as possible, he takes a relaxed tempo and, in a sort of running commentary, brings out the little highlights and asides that are usually lost in what is really a complex and lovely composition. Here is a real musician's musician--and what a joy to listen to!

  • you guys are sooo lucky! you like classical music, while i listen to junk! (rap) i really wish i didnt like listining to that garbage! now don't give this a thumbs down, do you really think i want to enjoy rap? classical is REAL music, and lots of people are starting to like other things. I DONT WANT TO LIKE RAP!!! why did they have to invent hip-hop? i want to enjoy classical. who here wants to exchange brains with me? no one? EXACTLY!!!

  • it is possible to like both y'know

  • wouldn't say it's necessarily junk. I like both, but classical more

  • lol thats interesting. i actually enjoy listening to both.

  • A very powerful and delightful performance. Wish you all the best.

  • Even through the bad video quality, you can hear the beautiful sweetness of his tone and the absolution of his musical ideas. Mr. Chen is a huge inspiration to me.

  • great talent!!! wish him all the best!!

  • Wonderful violinist,20 year...great personality.

    Big career,of course.Bravissimo!

  • his fingers are so long!

  • omg, his fingers are so skinny.. it matches the music! ^_^

  • You guys have to listen REAL good performance of this . For example Alena Baeva.

  • I agree about his sound.

  • i think it's the video quality.

  • hehehehe

his expression is so adorable when he plays :]

    very talented!!!

  • I listen new Saint-Seans. Brave to your style fancy. Very good playing.

  • Bravo!!!

  • superb bow control! what a talented musician. Bravo!!!

  • i want his fingers haha

  • Really brilliant playing,very personal!!!!

    poicpi

  • He plays so amazingly! It must be a huge honor to be 20 years old and playing an actual Stradavarius.

  • alright but it's also an honour for this stradivarius to be played by this person... ;)

  • whoa...

  • Awesome!!!!! So impressive!!!

  • queen elisabeth first prize winner?! :))

  • wow i keep watching this, it's sooo good!!!

his playing is soo smooth and elegant.

  • wow...... deeply moved !!! so great ^~^

  • yes he reminds me of vengerov's style or maybe because of his really weird facial expressions: gil shaham + vengerov.

but it's really nice playing though!!! just don't look at his face... lol.

  • that's probably because he had many masterclasses with vengerov and very close relations with him.

  • yes, and its a wonder that vadim repin was on the panel of judges isn't it?

  • yes and maybe that's one of his winning reasons.

  • Vadim Repin wasn't on the panel at that part of the competition, but he was when Ray Chen played Tsjaikowski concerto..

  • actually he was there for the whole competition..

  • I'm really sorry but I checked before answering here, and he really only attended the finals..

you should check the site of the queen elisabeth competition << jury 2009

    greets

  • what the hell does it matter where he is from he plays heavenly... and it also does not matter who he represented!!!!

  • I think he is so influensed by maxim vengerov.

  • If he doesn't have a management, then I am REALLY suprised!

He should get the IMG Artist Management if he doesn't already.

Somebody told me that IMG Artist has the best management.

Even Chad Hoopes has it, so why shouldn't Ray (or i'll say Mr. Chen) have it!

  • fantastic!

  • He represented Australia if I'm not mistaken.

  • yeah, but he's Taiwanese lol

  • I love him so much!!

  • Oh I didn't know he played this piece of Saint-Saens in the semi finals! It's one of my absolute favorite pieces for violin!

  • he's fantastic.

  • Absolutely the best violin I've heard the last year...

  • a wonderful musician (and a good actor 8D).

  • i love the clarity of his interpretation

  • he won the queen elisabeth contest, 20 000 money and 3 years stradivarius violin to play on, not bad

  • he won $40,000 3 year stradivarius violin loan and play in several concerts and record a cd

  • this is great!
