@something9313 I have to get back to you with the source; I read that about ten to twelve years ago when I was in a rampage reading just about everything I could of pre WWI Europe. It was in two books about the life of the Empress, one was in Spanish which was released later about the time of her centenary. I have since lend them both and never got them back :( But I will try and remember the author which if I recall correctly was a lady writer from Barcelona.
The Swiss bank account story is not false at all, Elizabeth knew very well the instability of the Empire and wanted to make provision for the family should a wave like the 1848 revolutions remove them from the throne. At the time of her assassination she was in Geneva in part to visit the Rothschild family which was managing her accounts. When the Empire eventually crumbled under the defeat of WWI the funds provided by Sisi in her accounts provided in large part to sustain them in exile.
@something9313 As far as I know, Sophie did not DESPISE Elisabeth, but she was cruel and repressive because she wanted Elisabeth to be the perfect empress for her son. Sophie was also a strong woman facing the sexism of her time, and both she and Elisabeth were victims of patriarchy that pits women against each other. The musical portrays her as more cruel then she was, but, yes, Sophie did make life miserable for Elisabeth, Tudolf and to some extent for Franz as well.
@something9313 Another victim of the Sisi myth. First off, Sisi was probably HAPPY Franz Joseph had lovers, seeing how sexual intercourse disgusted her. Hell, she was the one who introduced Katharina Schratt to him! She could've been a better mother to her children, but she chose her own interests first. Also, she wouldn't be able to travel around the world, where it not for her husband's blind, unconditional love that permitted her to do that with a hefty trust fund.
Elisabeth much like other WITTLESBACHS struggled with depression and other mental disorders. Elisabeth had constant thoughts of death and was even said to see ghost at times. I don't believe she was simply looking out for herself she just wasn't mentally stable, kinda like Ludwig lol:-)
@emlodik Probably yes! At least later in life! I feel like she was more of an outcast and a victim of sexism then a terrible person. She made lots of mistakes and did some cruel things, but in her situation and in her times, for a woman to struggle to be free was very difficult. It was the same for Sophie, who wasn't as much of a villain as the musical and cartoon make her out to be.
I don't think Sisi was as bad as you say, but she definitely was spoiled, selfish and had a very strained relationship with her son because he reminded her how inbred and unstable her family legacy is.
