@PrincessKonohana - Well, it'd be hard to joke about him reading the coins if he did it with the blindfold on! But actually another trainer made that very suggestion to me, and that was what gave me the idea to actually train a routine of tricks with Taz blindfolded, and we returned next year to do that, you'll find those videos on my page here at YouTube as well!

@KKSist3ers - Ah...Taz died very suddenly ( a couple hours from when I noticed anything was wrong to when he was gone). We don't know for sure, but believe he bled out from hemangiosacoma, a common and deadly cancer in dogs.

The coin she gave to Mario was from a different jar, then the ones she spread on the floor.  ALL of the coins in the jar she had Mario choose from were scented with something easily recognizable to Taz. :)

Even if the dog was just using Mario's scent, it's pretty impressive that he KNEW to go for Mario's scent. It's not like he could have just looked for any new scent, considering the stage (especially the carpet, since so many animals were on it before him) probably had at least hundreds of different scents on it.

Yup, exactly right! I actually scent the coins backstage just by leaving them in my pocket...the audience just never sees me do it. Just a little misdirection to make it more fun and get everyone thinking a little bit.

Ah, but what scent is he finding?! ;-) Yup you are right about the sneeze, he does that because that carpet is just FULL of all kinds of crazy scents. I was very proud that he continued to work so hard to find the coin, a lot of dogs would have stopped to check out all those interesting odors that carpet is full of (dogs, cats, horses, ducks, chickens, the list goes on!)

Dear Maryjo, your tribute site is really heartbreaking. I have to wait for a couple of days before I could post this 'cos I couldn't help crying,images are flashing on my mind after reading about that day Taz was put to sleep. Not all dogs are born equal & I believe that Taz was highly evolved! He has lived a very meaningful, wonderful & colorful life,& you-two brought out the best in each other! Yup, Taz is a very multi-talented dog! We always wanted to do something unique each time we went on the show, and had another routine ready for the next season too, but the show got cancelled! ;-(

It depends on the breeding and the age as well. My current sheltie is much smaller than Taz but has a ton of coat...and sheds twice as much as Taz ever did! Taz had what I consider ideal coat for a sheltie....proper double coat and beautiful when properly groomed, without being excessive. Many shelties these days are bred for extremely thick heavy coats which really are not appropriate for a working dog...but of course looks pretty on a show dog.
