Well, the right button is used to 'activate' the mechanism that will allow a spring to come out of the floor from under the tambourine when the left button is pressed. At 8:26 you hear a click-clack. Derren just walked on the right button. Now, he then goes to the left (of the girl) to press the left button at 8:43. See the pressure he exerts on the floor with his foot.

It's to do with little clues people give away as they're thinking of stuff, I think. Not that I would know from experience, but it's all to do with reading people. Derren's an expert at it, and I assume "mediums" are too, and that's how they convince people they are psychic. It's very interesting, though.

How do you get "Noreen"?? Even if it was three names he was hinting at, that's three out of how many other dozens of names were common in that era? Betty, Suzy, Vera (sounds nothing like Nora or Laura), Julia.. there's dozens of common names from that era.. To be quite honest, I don't know a single old lady named Laura, other than Laura Bush.. and she's not old enough to be this girl's grandmother.

What Derren does here in this seance is certainly extraordinary, but alot of physical mediums back in the victorian days did these seances in lit rooms with scientists watching their every move! Mediums like Daniel Home could levitate heavy tables and make instruments play tunes and he did this while being thoroughly examined. So Derren has demonstrated what the fraudulent mediums created back in the day, but many were genuine and never found out to be fakes!
They are all tricks, I fear. You may be interested in reading Derren's book 'tricks of the mind' in which after page 182, there is a photograph of Derren performing the table levitation. "A modern table levitation. Demonstrating a table-rise at home for scientist Dr Robert Smith (Senior fellow at University College, London). He sat quietly for a few minutes afterwards and then said 'Fuck me, I have no idea.'".

As part of one of Derren's live shows (the last tour, I think) which I was at, he did the whole levitating-table thing on stage with a bunch of audience members and I was second row. It certainly looked genuine, but my little sceptic's heart reminded me it wasn't, because Derren likes to play with your mind! So doing it in a lit room proves nothing, I'm afraid.
William Crookes could not tell how Kate Fox (the Fox sisters) were pulling his (and thousands of others') leg. Because he couldn't proove they were fake, they must be genuine, people concluded. Later Kate Fox confessed. So it's also about how you draw your conclusions.

I think that line has two functions: It serves to confuse the girl which makes it easier to bring her into trance (the emphasis on the words is strange, and it's a very vague statement), and secondly the audience may believe that with this line, Derren is somehow controlling the girl to throw the tambourine "...for you to do this yourself" could refer to the girl throwing the tambourine herself.

It doesn't show in the video, but he almost certainly sussed out Laura by watching her mouth in the moment afer he said, "her name is...". He's used the same trick many times in his stage stuff.

It's to do with little clues people give away as they're thinking of stuff, I think. Not that I would know from experience, but it's all to do with reading people. Derren's an expert at it, and I assume "mediums" are too, and that's how they convince people they are psychic. It's very interesting, though.

pfft derren brown never uses "plants" or stooges. it's an old technique called "cold reading" where you make whatever the "medium" says relevant to your own experience. it just so happens that derren is better than that idiot john edwards and doesn't actually claim to have these "powers".

Greetings Gangularis.
It is difficult to hear wheter her grandmothers name is Laura or Nora.
Anyway he is actually saying 3 names Laura, Nora and Noreen.
The "subjects" grandmother is probably born around WWII and common names at that time was Laura and Nora.
This is cold reading at its purest and very clevely done.

How do you get "Noreen"?? Even if it was three names he was hinting at, that's three out of how many other dozens of names were common in that era? Betty, Suzy, Vera (sounds nothing like Nora or Laura), Julia.. there's dozens of common names from that era.. To be quite honest, I don't know a single old lady named Laura, other than Laura Bush.. and she's not old enough to be this girl's grandmother.

What Derren does here in this seance is certainly extraordinary, but alot of physical mediums back in the victorian days did these seances in lit rooms with scientists watching their every move! Mediums like Daniel Home could levitate heavy tables and make instruments play tunes and he did this while being thoroughly examined. So Derren has demonstrated what the fraudulent mediums created back in the day, but many were genuine and never found out to be fakes!

They are all tricks, I fear. You may be interested in reading Derren's book 'tricks of the mind' in which after page 182, there is a photograph of Derren performing the table levitation. "A modern table levitation. Demonstrating a table-rise at home for scientist Dr Robert Smith (Senior fellow at University College, London). He sat quietly for a few minutes afterwards and then said 'Fuck me, I have no idea.'".

@mreesm i just watched an episode of him doing it live and it was weird there where no strings, i thought maybe magnets under the stage with like north to north so it would repel the table up, but that would be very unstable and he wasn't even touching it!. i do not believe for a second it was magic but it makes you wanna learn to do it just incase u wanna show off haha

As part of one of Derren's live shows (the last tour, I think) which I was at, he did the whole levitating-table thing on stage with a bunch of audience members and I was second row. It certainly looked genuine, but my little sceptic's heart reminded me it wasn't, because Derren likes to play with your mind! So doing it in a lit room proves nothing, I'm afraid.

William Crookes could not tell how Kate Fox (the Fox sisters) were pulling his (and thousands of others') leg. Because he couldn't proove they were fake, they must be genuine, people concluded. Later Kate Fox confessed. So it's also about how you draw your conclusions.
