actually, although each individual note corresponds to an individual tape, there are actual three different instruments on each tape, so a rack of tapes like the one shown contains all the notes for three instruments
Ignore the impatient ones, these things were magnificent. Is there more of this video? I've always wondered how these things work, the guy seems to know what he's doing. I've read about how you can change the racks of tapes for different sounds but this is the first time I've ever actually seen anybody doing it. Post the rest of it if you get a chance!
As much as I like plugins, if I had the money I'd happily own one of these and use it a hell of a lot. Wakeman only uses the plugin live, where reliability is essential, in studio he'd use an original Mellotron.
wish people would quit it with the"you could use a bloody computer instead- a der! So what, this is the real thing. Do you think people are stupid to be bothered with the real thing? Where the link to your sonic masterpiece then eh?
The mellotron is hardly used anymore due to "tape stretch" issues.

So those (in the case) are like different "expansion packs" for the mellotron?
ppetracco 3 years ago
yes, a single sound has an 8 second tape for every key so a "pack" like that one is basically just one sound

yes, lets all go to digital instruments, and just throw away those useless melltorons
heck Geddy Lee from RUSH used one on their new album, if it's good enough for RUSH, it's good enough for me
