people laugh when they see this - so do I, but in real life it is 1,000 times harder than this - basically, it's just the initiation to see if you can survive - the philosophy (right or wrong) is that if you can't stand name-calling or getting hit, you won't hold up when the sh*t hits the fan - and btw - being a drill instructor is 10 times harder than being a recruit - the DI's usually get divorced if they are married.  s/f

Lee Ermey had been a Marine DI (but not a senior DI). After his discharge, he was hired to play a DI in the movie The Boys In Company C. He had a few other bit parts over the next 10 years, then Kubrick hired him to be a consultant in FMJ. Ermey kept telling Kubrick that the actor hired wasn't getting it and the dialog wasn't right. Kubrick challenged Ermey to show him how it should be done. He did, and Kubrick replaced the actor with Ermey and let him improvise most of his lines.

Sure the beginnig of this movie is funny and all but guess what HE DIES! So does Pvt. Pyles. Pvt. Pyles killed himself because he was to overweight for the marines and he got cold-bloodedly beaten with bars of soap in hand towels. its a great movie. just look t up on netflix.

Did you know that he got the role by demonstrating how he could non-stop yell obscenities without repeating himself even once while being pelted with goddamn oranges? He had the entire thing filmed and sent it in, to show what a real marine is like and landed the job.
