you did a really, really nice job of combining the words of the Creed with incredible artwork. on a side note friend "Catholic" technically means "Universal". the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Chruches (like in Egypt and Russia) call their churches Catholic, too. beautiful video, and very, very well made. +++

I believe in the Holy Christian church yes, but I also believe in the holy catholic church, the creed uses the word catholic which means universal because the creed wishes to indicate that the church is for all the elect that is to say people from all tribes, tongues and nations not only for just one group of people, the universality of the church is one of the marks of the true church i.e one, holy, catholic and apostolic so it should not be omitted from the creed.
@Bernardoguiadonis - Pardon my ignorance here, but how does "Christian" not mean "universal...from all tribes, tongues, and nations"? Are you including people who do not confess Christ as savior in that list? If so, then I'm glad I didn't use "catholic" as you express it. "There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Acts 4
No I am merely pointing out that God calls to himself all types of people from all tribes tongues and nations, he calls them to himself and thus to Christianity, outside the mystical body of believers no one at all is saved.
Christian merely does not express the reality of this universal election as clearly as catholic does.
if the catholic means universal then why they have to change the word catholic to holy christian church if they mean it is for all the christians, why dont they just leave the original one as iti was. The problem is other non catholic christians, they all love what the catholic has but why they don't just to come back home so they can learn more about all the beliefs, traditions, the true faith, prayers etc. than all they have to do is using them and protesting anyithing about the catholic.
In my opinion, I don't think that prayers should come from memorization, paper, or from order. I believe prayers should come from the heart. So Jesus will know that you don't just say some words from a script and grant it as a prayer.
Technically, the creed is not a prayer. It is more like a pledge of allegiance.
However, the notion that memorization takes away from a prayer I think might be faulty. You memorize many things in life, from the look of your wife's face to the 23rd Psalm to the cheers of your favorite team - does that detract? Only if you let them.
@SuperOriginalGuy Jesus Himself gave us a prayer to memorize. That is the Lord's Prayer. Whether you pray from memorization or not, He can see the true intent of your heart.
Where in the Bible does it say that spontaneous prayer is preferred? Isn't the Bible FULL of written prayers (the Psalms, +)? When the disciples asked Jesus how to pray, didn't he give them words, rather than saying "just pray whatever is on your heart"? Doesn't the Bible say that the heart is wicked and deceitful, and not to be trusted? Is your best, spontaneous thought better to bounce up to God than a well-conceived thought, "taken captive" for the purposes of God?
@uffizian your heart isn't deceiving you, the devil is. I'm gonna be honest why is this conversation going on, I mean this subject is almost pointless.
I didn't start it - just had to question a pretty immature post about spontaneity. An equally immature response to a series of Biblical questions is "this subject is almost pointless." How we communicate to God, pointless? With so many mixed messages like these all over YouTube, it's no wonder contemporary Christianity is a laughing stock in the worlds' eyes. PEOPLE: Seek faith-answers from people and places of substance, not YouTube!!!
@uffizian ok, I don't laugh at my own faith, and do not judge me. I was not referring to communication with god as pointless, I was referring that the conversation we were having had pointless meaning. You already shoved in my face that it's pretty much bad, and don't twist what I just said into something more logically factorized... Now, why I think Christians are laughing stocks is because of how most of you "close to god" figures consider yourself better than most through your statements.
@uffizian But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Matt 6:7
The Psalms that you mention are perhaps the best place to go to learn about true prayer. What we find there is an open view of David, and a few others, who showed us what it was to pray. What we find in these prayers, in all their variety, is men, who were seeking after the Lord, in spirit and truth.
when we look at these prayers, we learn many things, not the least of which is open honesty before God. David, the man that was after God's own heart, is among the greatest of blessings to God's people, in that through his life, and especially through his prayers and praises to the Lord in Psalms, we are given a wonderful example of what it is to pray to God. What God wants from all those who would pray to and worship God is those who will come to him in spirit and in truth.
this is the only way to pray to God. sometimes, the most potent prayer is illustrated in the frequently used word in Psalms-Selah-that is in quietly waiting upon the Lord. as James instructs us to be slow to speak and quick to hear; sometimes the most precious moments in prayer are when we learn to listen in it, to wait upon the word of the Lord to our soul; upon which the fountain of praise will come rushing from our hearts to his glory and goodness to the children of men.
after all; who when finding themselves in the room of a wiseman would be so foolish as to spend the whole time being the one talking instead of the one listening. if then, in our own hours of prayer, if we have come to the throne of the Wisdom of God in Jesus Christ, would we really be more inclined to have something to say or to listen to what the Wisdom of God would share with us?
at the end of it all, it is really not about whether it is spontaneous or not; but whether or not it is done in spirit and truth. where it is spontaneous it can tend to be without much thought to it-which contradicts the part of loving God with all your mind. if it ritualized or memorized prayer it can tend to be without much sincerity-which contradicts loving God with all your heart. true prayer will be by the Spirit through faith.
I'll take the shots at using "Christian" all day long Gerry. You Roman Catholic, or what is your grievance against the term "Christian" as opposed to "catholic"?
@jwinterscom "catholic" means the universal Church, while "Catholic" means the RCC. In the creed it is the former not the latter. Note the capitalization. Are Methodists such as myself the only protestants who don't feel the need to re-write the creed at risk of sounding "too Catholic?"
@jwinterscom His grievance??? The Apostles creed is wrong here. The Apostles Creed says, "Holy Catholic Church." Catholic is a descriptor meaning "of the whole" or "universal", so by using a different word, you change what the creed is saying. More Christians need to learn what things mean, why thing are done, where the Church & its Creeds are from, what they are for...how can someone call himself a serious Christian and not know why you shouldn't change The authentic Apostles Creed?????
this is what I have notice to protestant people is to murder the originality of the catholic works, they corrupting the original content of the bible, the original prayer of " our father", corrupting the truth interpretation of the scriptures in the bible, now even this the original version of the " apostolic creed. If they want all the stuffs of the catholic, then why they don't just come back home to the one only true apostolic church founded by Jesus himself than distorting its originality.
@gerryboy101 Believers were first called "Christians" at Antioch. Ask most Catholics why God should let them into His Heaven should they die tonight and you get this list: I obey the 10 Commandments, I've tried to be a good person, I attended church and went to confession. There is nothing wrong with these but our hope is on Jesus and his shed blood only. It is the living relationship with Jesus that our faith is and should be about. There is no saving work. only saving faith.
@courag1 ... work out your salvation with fear and trembling... faith + works + hold fast to tradition + personal relationship with our lord + prayer + + +
@gerryboy101 When such things as torture to cure infidels in inquisitions lasting a couple hundred years, you maintain the tradition? You now read an English Bible because men were willing to die at the hands of the RCC to allow you the privilege which has cost you nothing. When did Jesus torture anyone or molest an altar boy? When did Mary become coredemptrix with Christ. There is only one mediator between God & man and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. Not Mary, not a church. He saves, that's it.
Larry, thanks. Wondering where you got the date of 215 though. Most scholarship I've seen is rather ambiguous as to a defined date and rather places the Apostle's Creed along a spectrum of time.
Also, my apologies if you believe that changing "catholic" to "Christian" is insulting. It was not my purpose to insult you, but rather to provide an (albeit paraphrased) dynamic equivalent to the true thought of the text.
How do you see "Christian" as differing from "catholic church"?
j- I agree with your alteration. catholic as expressed in the creed is quite different from the "Catholic" that contemporary people would interpret the word to mean. The Catholic church was not established, however the catholic (lower case) church was. It's a way to refer to the universal church not the Roman one. No disrespect in the clarification. Remember the creed itself was intended to clarify and make plain the beliefs of the early church.
Catholic means "universal" - and changing the case does not change the meaning of the word. There is ONE Church that fits this description (as opposed to the 38,000 denominations or lack thereof claiming to be "catholic).
@jwinterscom it is understandable to want to not use the word 'catholic' when considering the different meaning popularly applied to it today. perhaps a better rendering, to stay true to the original intent and meaning of the word would be 'universal'. but in a way, as clouded and muddied is the term catholic in today's modern vernacular, so the same might be said of the term 'Christian' as it is so flippantly & blasphemously claimed and used today.
Jesus, yielded up the ghost behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying Truly this was the Son of God.
That is so true, but it's the people who believe that try to force it on to others that don't, when there perfectly happy, that's what pisses me off about religion (not just just Christianity)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This sounds disturbing when you said Jesus descended into hell. The thief on the cross "Jesus said today you will be with me in Paradise". So hell is Paradise. Another false religion. Paradise is Hell. I am muslim.
First Jesus descended into hell because he paid for OUR sins, so He defeted hell and the devil and then ascended into Heaven and He´s sitting at the right hand of the Father!
Only through Jesus' sacrifice you can be saved from hell. Islam is just another way to hell, it is a false doctrine. Muhammad was a false prophet and he's suffering in the lake of fire! So I warn you, with God's love, give up that islamic cult!
Believe in Jesus Christ and be baptized for the remission of your sins!
You should be worried unless you believe in Jesus' atonement you will be suffering in hell.
Judgement day will come, we don't know the time. But you have to wash your sins in Jesus' blood!
St John 20:29 "Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed."
dont be ridiculous, its the great ju ju under the sea and his invisible pink starfish son you have to believe in.
look mate, the bible was made up to gain power over stupid people by a load of drug addled, possibly schizophrenic priests from the roman empire, that has no more kink to REALITY than the above wot i just made up. so get a life ffs.
thats what you get if you threaten me with imaginary, and completely inappropriate punishments for doing nothing.
what so i get punished for eternity because i reject the words of a nutter on the internet.
when you realise why you reject the great ju ju under the sea and his magic starfish son, or 1 billion muslims for that matter, you may also realize why i reject YOUR belief system.
hell was not even in the jewish old testiment. it was copied from hades, the greek underworld idea. in the same way as the whole of christianity was just a mishmash of jewish myth and roman paganism.
why, because i reject ALL superstition, including yours?
you presumably have rejected all the worlds superstitions EXCEPT the one you CHANCED upon RANDOMLY due to an accident of birth. if you were born in india you would be a hindu INSTEAD.
but would i?
being different does not make me 'ignorant of the world'. it indicates the opposite. because i am not prone to magical thinking and irrational fear, and i have intellectual integrity, i can view reality as it really is. a rare gift indeed.
sans evidence i just can't believe in ridiculous ideas like 'god', even if i wanted to. its not in my nature. Intellectual integrity overrules selfish needs any day. To me, having a world view in harmony with REALITY makes me happy. Creating a fantasy world to artificially bolster 'happiness' would make me unhappy! the 'believe to be saved' concept is totally ludicrous. How can you believe in anything if you don't. Thats why atheists couldnt logically be 'punished', even if there was a god.
I am interested in why you would access a video on the apostle's creed if it isn't your creed? To pick a fight with people who are edified by it? I guess I don't get your motivation. Regardless, you seem to have a lot of anger. It's important to realize that regardless of who you are or what you believe in, we all have faith in something. Whether it is the Divine or ourselves. Having faith solely in human intellect is a scary proposition, because as history will tell us, are prone to error.
" Having faith solely in human intellect is a scary proposition."
haha, but your using human intellect to say that! history tells us we have become ever better at understanding reality using the tools of science and reason, to the point of making computers, vaccines, cloning, space exploration etc. the evidence suggests putting 'faith' in 'human intellect' is reasonable because it works. but its not then 'faith'. you just have faith in magic pixie dust technology. its not even wrong.
"I am interested in why you would access a video on the apostle's creed if it isn't your creed? To pick a fight with people who are edified by it?"
i think the video was linked as a response to an atheist video. i made a reasonable post in reply to nonsense, which was challenged by more nonsense. when an idiot condemned me to hell for not 'believing', i explained it was ridiculous. the music' itself is lovely. but it should be a reminder of magical beliefs of ignorant times past.
Personally I do believe in God, but I respect that you don't. You really don't need to come on here to flame people who do.. believe whatever helps you sleep at night, right? In the end, we're all just monkies who are afriad of the dark.. and whether our night-light be religion or science... it really doesn't change much.
fine, but your position of respectful tolerance of non belief only stems from past robust criticism of religious ideas (which is what your condemning). its only through being exposed to reason that faith heads been forced to respect atheists
you are just angry man who is mad at life and people - nobody wants to listen to you in real life thats why you come online and try to calm your anger through negative messages :)) you come here because internet is much cheaper that a visit to psychiatrist who would listen to you.. :)) no matter what u say here people will believe in God.. and if u come to me and say that God is nonsense i will have to stuff ur tongue in ur ass :)) have a great day :))
haha. i'm crazy? the irony! you'd think it was me who believed a cosmic jewish zombie who reads your thoughts is going to save my ass from a pit of eternal torture set up because a woman who was magically created from a mans rib ate a magic apple because a talking snake told her too.
to pattorse97:: thats true,, but i dont actually like when some people try to force others to believe,, i mean those folks who distribute fliers with religious content on the streets and scream that all must go to hell if dont believe. I think person should come to God on their own. And there is no way that i would accept God if you told me that No human creature can be truly happy without God.. Its deep in heart of each person - happy or not, they know better their own feelings. dont push :)
@StBonifatius As a former RC my eyes are opened to the endless anti-Biblical lies and deceptions of the Great Harlot of Rev.17, Mother of harlots (Protestantist schisms). Flee from out of them (REV>18:4) Seek to become a member of the "Bride of Christ"
I would say that he descended into hell because in addition to paying for our sins he also payed for the sins of the OT saints that is to say Christ did not descend to the hell of the damned to defeat death and the devil (all that was accomplished on Calvary) but to the Limbus patrium/the bosom of Abraham where the saints prior to Christ waited for him so as to benefit from his saving work .... wouldn't you agree?
From the Greek words kat' holos, literally meaning "according to the whole," or in actual use, worldwide or universal. The word catholic became part of the Creed before "catholic" became associated with the Roman church, and many Protestant churches use the Creed with the word catholic. One body, united by God's Spirit.
@djl1980 because they are the protestant people, thier job is always to protest anything about catholic faith, beliefs, traditions and works that's why I dont impress in them.
There are varying English translations of the Apostle's Creed from Greek. Since the Apostle's Creed is the oldest creed of Christianity, there were a few words that seem to have been in the creed that were not translated into English at times. Another example is "conceived by the Holy Spirit" and "conceived by the *power of* the Holy Spirit"
I have a question. Is this another version of the Nicean Creed, or is it a different creed? I am asking because there is no mention of the procession of the holy Spirit from the Father alone or the father and the Son, an issue in which I am interested right now. The version presented here is the one I hear every time I go to the Catholic mass. Could any one help me with that?
Lysandros, the Apostle's Creed actually predates the Nicene creed. The issue that you're talking about here is called the "filioque" (Latin meaning "and the Son"). If you want to talk about it more indepth, go to my website and pick up my contact info or contact me through YouTube...or just ask any questions here. Christ Bless You!
Thank your for your reply. This is interesting, because being myself from Catholic background, I do not recall hearing the Nicean Creed (whether the original or the modified version) at all at mass. It is always the Apsotle's Creed that is recited. Perhaps more shamefully, I wasn't aware that there still was the Apostle's Creed in the Church, this is why I was asking what had become of the Nicean Creed in the West.
This is incorrect information. The Apostles' Creed is first attested in its present form in the 8th century by the Benedictine monk St. Priminius of Reichenau. The Nicene Creed was formulated at the Council of Nicea in 325. (See J.N.D. Kelly "Early Christian Creeds" pp. 250-262, 368-434).
"Lysandros" "AC" created around 150 A.D, "NC" created 325 A.D.Traditionally, in the West, the "AC" is used at Baptisms, and the "NC" at the Eucharist[AKA the Mass, the Liturgy, the Lord's Supper, or the Holy Communion.] The East uses only the "NC".)
But also the council of Nicaea founded the creed to put an end to wording discrepancies between Christians at that time and create peace. Its an East V West thing!!!!
I can see why one would be concerned about using Catholic or Christian. I was always taught that 'Catholic' ment 'universal'. More of an allincompasing term. "I believe in one catholic and apostolic church," or something like that. There is deffinately alot of people who's mind flag that 'catholic' word now, even in the innoscentest of places.
I actually struggled with the decision to use Catholic or Christian. I wanted the video to be usable by a wide variety of people. Also, I've seen "Christian" used in Roman Catholic books. Lastly, when it gets down to semiotics - the word "Catholic" still denotes something different in postmodern and modern context than what "Christian" does. In the original context the two words were close synonyms but in our context at this present time they are nuanced apart.
J, Nice video, lousy excuses and even worse arguments. If you want the video to be usable by a wide variety of people, put in Garfield instead of the Trinity and call it LasagnaLovers, not the Creed.
and you want is accessible to all people as possible and change the word that defines the church as open to all universally... ironic don;t you think?
You have NEVER seen "Christian" as a replacement for the Greek "Catholic" in ANY Roman Catholic book EVER. Every RC book has the approval of a bishop giving Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat saying everything in the book is consistant with Church teaching and there are NO objections.
Catholic and Christian (in terms of the etymology) are NOT synonyms NOW or EVER. Christian by definition is "of Christ" (of the Annointed/Messiah as used in Septuagent and New Testament original Greek), Catholic by translation means "Universal". There is only ONE Church, and it is Christian, so there is no need to put that in a creed, it DEFINES Christianity, so how could you use the word Christian to describe Christianity.
Well I think that line "One holy catholic apostolic church" was inserted in the original Apostle's creed in response to the reformation. So to be true to the original, you can leave it out.
No but it's just a fact. I'm catholic and I took theology at St. John's University in NYC and they teach that fact in the 101 course. It's common knowledge it's definitely not just what I think.
You do the Church, yourself, and people seeking truth a MAJOR disservice by whimsically changing things set in stone for a reason. To equivocate and vaccilate after the fact, making things up, just makes you look even worse.
Although Catholic and Christian should be synonymous. I think the video would be better if it said The Holy Catholic Church instead of The Holy Christian Church. I've seen it written like that in a protestant book.
WOW! Why alter the creed from Catholic to Christian Church. It wasn't written that way why change it? its not your place. Catholics are Christian and the church we go to is call Catholic... Its like Italians say their from Italy.

What we find in these prayers, in all their variety, is men, who were seeking after the Lord, in spirit and truth.
HermitintheRain 8 months ago
when we look at these prayers, we learn many things, not the least of which is open honesty before God.
HermitintheRain 8 months ago
this is the only way to pray to God. sometimes, the most potent prayer is illustrated in the frequently used word in Psalms-Selah-that is in quietly waiting upon the Lord. as James instructs us to be slow to speak and quick to hear; sometimes the most precious moments in prayer are when we learn to listen in it, to wait upon the word of the Lord to our soul; upon which the fountain of praise will come rushing from our hearts to his glory and goodness to the children of men.
HermitintheRain 8 months ago
after all; who when finding themselves in the room of a wiseman would be so foolish as to spend the whole time being the one talking instead of the one listening. if then, in our own hours of prayer, if we have come to the throne of the Wisdom of God in Jesus Christ, would we really be more inclined to have something to say or to listen to what the Wisdom of God would share with us?
HermitintheRain 8 months ago
at the end of it all, it is really not about whether it is spontaneous or not; but whether or not it is done in spirit and truth. where it is spontaneous it can tend to be without much thought to it-which contradicts the part of loving God with all your mind. if it ritualized or memorized prayer it can tend to be without much sincerity-which contradicts loving God with all your heart. true prayer will be by the Spirit through faith.

jwinterscom 1 year ago
@jwinterscom i'm just playn, no grievance here.
gerryboy101 1 year ago
@jwinterscom "catholic" means the universal Church, while "Catholic" means the RCC. In the creed it is the former not the latter. Note the capitalization. Are Methodists such as myself the only protestants who don't feel the need to re-write the creed at risk of sounding "too Catholic?"
ajatkinson2004 1 year ago
@ajatkinson2004 No, some Lutherans still use "catholic" as opposed to "Christian".
MrPreacherman94 1 year ago
@jwinterscom His grievance??? The Apostles creed is wrong here. The Apostles Creed says, "Holy Catholic Church." Catholic is a descriptor meaning "of the whole" or "universal", so by using a different word, you change what the creed is saying. More Christians need to learn what things mean, why thing are done, where the Church & its Creeds are from, what they are for...how can someone call himself a serious Christian and not know why you shouldn't change The authentic Apostles Creed?????
SeriousVoyager 9 months ago
this is what I have notice to protestant people is to murder the originality of the catholic works, they corrupting the original content of the bible, the original prayer of " our father", corrupting the truth interpretation of the scriptures in the bible, now even this the original version of the " apostolic creed. If they want all the stuffs of the catholic, then why they don't just come back home to the one only true apostolic church founded by Jesus himself than distorting its originality.
lovencare62 9 months ago
@gerryboy101 Believers were first called "Christians" at Antioch. Ask most Catholics why God should let them into His Heaven should they die tonight and you get this list: I obey the 10 Commandments, I've tried to be a good person, I attended church and went to confession. There is nothing wrong with these but our hope is on Jesus and his shed blood only. It is the living relationship with Jesus that our faith is and should be about. There is no saving work. only saving faith.
courag1 1 year ago
@courag1 ... work out your salvation with fear and trembling... faith + works + hold fast to tradition + personal relationship with our lord + prayer + + +
gerryboy101 1 year ago

How do you see "Christian" as differing from "catholic church"?
jwinterscom 2 years ago
j- I agree with your alteration. catholic as expressed in the creed is quite different from the "Catholic" that contemporary people would interpret the word to mean. The Catholic church was not established, however the catholic (lower case) church was. It's a way to refer to the universal church not the Roman one. No disrespect in the clarification. Remember the creed itself was intended to clarify and make plain the beliefs of the early church.
theshortladders 2 years ago

HermitintheRain 8 months ago
The Apostles' Creed was formulated by 215 AD. It reads "catholic" - meaning of the whole or universal - and to see it blatantly altered is insulting.

This sounds disturbing when you said Jesus descended into hell. The thief on the cross "Jesus said today you will be with me in Paradise". So hell is Paradise. Another false religion. Paradise is Hell. I am muslim.
gooldie888 3 years ago
First Jesus descended into hell because he paid for OUR sins, so He defeted hell and the devil and then ascended into Heaven and He´s sitting at the right hand of the Father!
Only through Jesus' sacrifice you can be saved from hell. Islam is just another way to hell, it is a false doctrine. Muhammad was a false prophet and he's suffering in the lake of fire! So I warn you, with God's love, give up that islamic cult!
Believe in Jesus Christ and be baptized for the remission of your sins!

sans evidence i just can't believe in ridiculous ideas like 'god', even if i wanted to. its not in my nature.

Having faith solely in human intellect is a scary proposition, because as history will tell us, are prone to error.
mutti3daughters 3 years ago 3
" Having faith solely in human intellect is a scary proposition."
haha, but your using human intellect to say that! history tells us we have become ever better at understanding reality using the tools of science and reason, to the point of making computers, vaccines, cloning, space exploration etc. the evidence suggests putting 'faith' in 'human intellect' is reasonable because it works. but its not then 'faith'. you just have faith in magic pixie dust technology. its not even wrong.
andy765gtr 3 years ago
"I am interested in why you would access a video on the apostle's creed if it isn't your creed? To pick a fight with people who are edified by it?"
i think the video was linked as a response to an atheist video. i made a reasonable post in reply to nonsense, which was challenged by more nonsense. when an idiot condemned me to hell for not 'believing', i explained it was ridiculous. the music' itself is lovely. but it should be a reminder of magical beliefs of ignorant times past.

Why did you change "holy Catholic church" to holy christian church???
djl1980 3 years ago
From the Greek words kat' holos, literally meaning "according to the whole," or in actual use, worldwide or universal. The word catholic became part of the Creed before "catholic" became associated with the Roman church, and many Protestant churches use the Creed with the word catholic. One body, united by God's Spirit.

Hey Glorthac,
There are varying English translations of the Apostle's Creed from Greek.

Lysandros 4 years ago
Lysandros, the Apostle's Creed actually predates the Nicene creed. The issue that you're talking about here is called the "filioque" (Latin meaning "and the Son"). If you want to talk about it more indepth, go to my website and pick up my contact info or contact me through YouTube...or just ask any questions here. Christ Bless You!
jwinterscom 4 years ago
Thank your for your reply. This is interesting, because being myself from Catholic background, I do not recall hearing the Nicean Creed (whether the original or the modified version) at all at mass. It is always the Apsotle's Creed that is recited. Perhaps more shamefully, I wasn't aware that there still was the Apostle's Creed in the Church, this is why I was asking what had become of the Nicean Creed in the West.
Lysandros 4 years ago
It was in the Traditional Mass.
DanVilAl 3 years ago
This is incorrect information. The Apostles' Creed is first attested in its present form in the 8th century by the Benedictine monk St. Priminius of Reichenau. The Nicene Creed was formulated at the Council of Nicea in 325. (See J.N.D. Kelly "Early Christian Creeds" pp. 250-262, 368-434).
jpwgibson 4 years ago
About the "Holy christian Church," I usually hear it as "Holy Catholic Church" at church.
Lysandros 4 years ago
"Lysandros" "AC" created around 150 A.D, "NC" created 325 A.D.Traditionally, in the West, the "AC" is used at Baptisms, and the "NC" at the Eucharist[AKA the Mass, the Liturgy, the Lord's Supper, or the Holy Communion.] The East uses only the "NC".)
MrMaronite08 4 years ago
But also the council of Nicaea founded the creed to put an end to wording discrepancies between Christians at that time and create peace. Its an East V West thing!!!!
MrMaronite08 4 years ago
I can see why one would be concerned about using Catholic or Christian. I was always taught that 'Catholic' ment 'universal'. More of an allincompasing term. "I believe in one catholic and apostolic church," or something like that. There is deffinately alot of people who's mind flag that 'catholic' word now, even in the innoscentest of places.
Onnada 4 years ago
I actually struggled with the decision to use Catholic or Christian. I wanted the video to be usable by a wide variety of people. Also, I've seen "Christian" used in Roman Catholic books. Lastly, when it gets down to semiotics - the word "Catholic" still denotes something different in postmodern and modern context than what "Christian" does. In the original context the two words were close synonyms but in our context at this present time they are nuanced apart.
jwinterscom 4 years ago
J, Nice video, lousy excuses and even worse arguments. If you want the video to be usable by a wide variety of people, put in Garfield instead of the Trinity and call it LasagnaLovers, not the Creed.
adriankikuo 2 years ago
and you want is accessible to all people as possible and change the word that defines the church as open to all universally... ironic don;t you think?
adriankikuo 2 years ago
You have NEVER seen "Christian" as a replacement for the Greek "Catholic" in ANY Roman Catholic book EVER. Every RC book has the approval of a bishop giving Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat saying everything in the book is consistant with Church teaching and there are NO objections.
adriankikuo 2 years ago
Catholic and Christian (in terms of the etymology) are NOT synonyms NOW or EVER. Christian by definition is "of Christ" (of the Annointed/Messiah as used in Septuagent and New Testament original Greek), Catholic by translation means "Universal". There is only ONE Church, and it is Christian, so there is no need to put that in a creed, it DEFINES Christianity, so how could you use the word Christian to describe Christianity.
adriankikuo 2 years ago
The four marks of the Church are:
ONE
HOLY
CATHOLIC
APOSTOLIC
these are the four characteristics that define the True Church of the Risen and Living GOD.
adriankikuo 2 years ago
Well I think that line "One holy catholic apostolic church" was inserted in the original Apostle's creed in response to the reformation. So to be true to the original, you can leave it out.
