Kennedy's death was the downfall of this country! Mark is not talking about George Wallace! He's talking about someone who can withstand the corruption of money! Fighting is a word that causes big men to get rich! There's money in this war and peace now aint this a bitch!!
Yeah, I had this album back in the 70s. I remember the round cover. Album covers then were a part of the experience. look at some of the others like hellbound train by Savoy Brown, King Crimson, and others
Love the energy in this song: drums, beat, etc. Was in the army during the Vietnam War but never was much interested in the lyrics, ironically, then or now. Man, I just dig the beat.
WHY does the info on this vid say it's a sledgehammer riff highliighted by Farner's driving guitar?! If the bass isn't the highlight, then WHAT THE FUCK.
Brings back memories of a damp basement packed with amps, drum kit, hardly any room to stand, two windows open about six feet off the ground, several hippie chicks standing in the corner getting high, and me and my two buddies rocking out tunes by GFR, Iron Butterfly, Moby Grape, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver... and MAN OH MAN do I sometimes long for those days, especially when I see the cell phone bills for my three kids, the morgage, dental bills, car payments, name brand clothes...FUCK!!
@HOTROD74GremlinX Hey man I´m really thinking about givin up my german citizenship. The German state is thinking as comercial as USA, too. Does anybody will want peace, if you can earn money and even still your paranoid mind? Yes !! ... Maybe you and I ... music is our political platform
@totowolf2011 - No hablo Espanol - Tengo 53 anos. Usted es mi amigo! Sorry my Spanish is not better - Muchas Gracias Mi Amigo for your reply! GRAND FUNK RAILROAD -- "The People's BAND"! Ed in Sacramento, California U.S.A,
Thanks for uploading this great song. The verse you mention must of had McGovern in mind, who ran for Pres. that yr. As usual, their social commentary is right -on. Funny how the truth never ages!
has everyone forgotten that george bush started killing with his propaganda war about weapons of mass destruction in iraq (which we could never seem to find). and for those who have forgotten, the war in afghanistan(also started by bush, and rightfully so) was started to root out the taliban which had given sanctuary to al-queda even before they put planes into both of the twin towers and the pentagon. how quickly we forget in order to blame someone we don't like
If you think that this country is for the people, by the people, you are dead wrong. The fat cats in Washington killed the last real president we had, that mother fuckin johnson. Every president since Kennedy was nothing but a puppet including Obama. Rise up people and take back what is ours. If they want war, lets give it to them. I know I'm sick of this bullshit tyrannical Government!!!!!
@ladyluvspink True fuckin shit. I hate how people argue democratic or republican when it's really all the same evil thing. Remember people, revolution is our god given right.
i disagree with the description above. " what does it take to make you understand the value of a man?" is an awesome and heavy lyric and even if the quote, "if the president did what he said the country would be alright.." came from george wallace, he was telling the truth. nixion did not do what he said he would do. nixon said he would withdraw the troops but did the opposite.
My pop would crank Grand Funk when I was a kid. Talk about some raw rock n roll! This is when rock was real! Born a few years too late I guess. MARK, DON and MEL ROCK!!!
The message was right then as it is now. My war was based on a lie just like this one was. (mushroom cloud) Lets just send all the patriotic men & women off to die in the middle east, or worse yet TBI. I hired the "new boss" to stop the war in Iraq but he gave the generals and Halliburton their wet dream in Afghanistan. Money for all the Dick Cheny's in this country.
On a better note; GFR was great and I dig all the albums, especially Closer to Home.
@deemat555 Agree completely. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD - The Premiere American POWER TRIO. LOUDER THAN THE WHO. HEAVIER THAN CREAM. I like both of those bands I just mentioned. It's just that people who really know music, know Grand Funk Railroad out of Flint, Michigan U.S.A. ROCKED and rocked hard. Plus they wrote the majority of their own music with Brother MARK FARNER. I was there then, I remember when Grand Funk Railroad hit the scene in early 1969. I've been a fan ever since.
I'm still amazed how relavent GFRR is after all these years...we haven't changed a thing have we? Hope is still saying stop the war! Peace is saying stop the war! And war is saying stop the war!! I've gotta go listen to more GFRR STOP THE WAR!

That album cover is epic. Must be one of the most original ever. Grand Funk: My first rock idols. I was in tears when I saw them at the Beacon Theatre, here in NYC, some years back for the reunion. And I'm a manly man.
How you doing? I remember my younger brother picking up this one I had ordered from the record store back in the late 70's. He told me the record guy came back to the counter with a look of reverence on his face. Everybody in the store was looking at it. I couldn't believe it when he gave it to me. And the music! A great time in my life.
Yeah is funny how a band's music becomes the soundtrack of your live. And is usually when you're young that most shit happens, and then you remember: "I was listening to this song when that happened..!" And I've realized now, Grand Funk music was fucking always been played in the background..LOL.. I just read your other comment in another video, about your "pool job", very funny...Cheers
no shit... definitely one of my soundtracks...weren't we lucky to come up in such a groovy time instead of now!!??! I worry for the kids today! Hope they listen when we try to "teach the children well".
@kbaugherful Im 29, and Ive gotta say, it worries me too guys! Even the times I gre up in are better than this. HEY EvanEli ,! KISS MY ASS< I"M A HARD WORKIN HARD FUCKIN HARD FIGHTIN, HILLBILLY REDNECK THAT THINKS YOUR A PIECE OF BIGGOTED RASIST PUKE THAT NEEDS TO GET THE HELL OUT OF THIS FREE COUNTRY< WHAT ARE YOU < A NAZI?
SPEAK ENGLISH..THIS IS AMERICA,RESPECT IT AS YOU EXPECT ME TO RESPECT YOU COUNTRY.I AM NOT GOING TO LEARN YOUR LANGUAGE IN MY COUNTRY.Oh and FUCK our useless government.
koolbossjock: you seem to forget that the internet and YouTube are international....why are you so upset that people write in their native language? Maybe because you don't know any other languages and probably don't even have a proper command of the English language. My native language is Spanish but when I came to the U.S. I learned English and then proceeded to learn French and Italian...education is a beautiful thing...you should try it...open your eyes....and heart...we are one planet
You know SHIT about my education. I am sick of imigrants comming over here and expecting us to learn their language.Maybe if you had to live in mexifornia aka what used to be california you might have a different opinion.Even the good mexicans that live here and speak english and obey the law are Sick of it as well. Now go take another french class.Look above..What does it say?? ENGLISH.
Hey you Hillbilly Redneck Inbred piece of shit. Who said he is even in the United States. You are to stupid to realize that there are people that live outside the U.S.
Before writing dumb shit online then why don't you tell us what ginnorenzo said.
Its funny how these lyrics are ringing true once again almost 40 years later. We need to stop the killing of our sons and daughters once and for all.I know for sure GFR never expected this shit.
Yes, I thought the "wonderful" Obama promised he was gonna stop it all instantly??? Sounds like he wants to expand it into Lebanon and Pakistan now? and I don't hear anything about troop withdrawal anymore. That freaking lying phony useless &*#@er.
Nah, that's what it is even though only a quarter. LOL!!! Just kidding. Actually that wasn't the word I had in mind when I wrote that. What I was calling him started with F and ended in ucker.
I think this is GFR's finest moment, a jam that ranks up there with the best anti-war songs. The fact that these guys come from the heartland of the U.S. just gives it that much more soul and power. Bravo.
in 1973 or 74 when hearing this music for the very first time i was 14 or 15 years old and didn't think about the meaning of the lyrics very much. But true, it's even more relevant today. Great music from the great 70's !
Maybe you are right, but only if you don't only look at America's war on terror. We are not the only nation who wars, like most people tend to think. Or are led to believe, or society wants you to believe.
one of my favourite songs ! when I listened to this album for the first time... I said... no... it couldn't be possible... LOL... thank you Mark for your music
JorgeAmarull: You are absolutely CORRECT!!! If each of us sent this to everyone we have on our list, that would get the song out. They would listen and realize, they should pass it on too. The song might be 30 years old, but it sure as HELL is needed RIGHT NOW!!!! VOTE EVERYONE, IT COULD BE THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION OF YOUR LIFETIME. PEACE!!
Stop the war, so communist North Vietnam can win!!! ...can't hide the truth from everyone. Jane Fonda has oceans of blood on her hands. There is nothing peaceful about her. She was a radical militant rooting for a blood-thirsty aggressor. Peace, love, and total dominance at all cost. The true meaning of left-wing peace... total left-wing dominance.
lu5do:Sorry, man. I am going to have to set a good example here. As much as I want to be bad, I am just going to say that I don't know. I even Googled it and everything for you. I am already living in shame anyway, so I won't make my life worse. I have to start packing soon anyway because I am being banished from society, going to a deserted island where it will only be Me and My Music.
I have been banished because..........Oh, I just can't say. But, try a bass tabs store, they might know. :)
Hey, I will go be banished with you and the music. I can sing like a rock and roll angel with soul. You would love that shit on your island! Also, we could plant as much mary joseph (marijuana) as we wanted to. I was already deciding to banish myself from society, anyway. Hahah.
Actually, they were named for the Grand TRUNK Railroad, but replaced the word FUNK for obvious reasons. Best Michigan born-and-bred band ever.

SPEAK ENGLISH..THIS IS AMERICA,RESPECT IT AS YOU EXPECT ME TO RESPECT YOU COUNTRY.I AM NOT GOING TO LEARN YOUR LANGUAGE IN MY COUNTRY.Oh and FUCK our useless government.
koolbossjock 2 years ago
koolbossjock: you seem to forget that the internet and YouTube are international....why are you so upset that people write in their native language?

Cheers.

Maybe you are right, but only if you don't only look at America's war on terror. We are not the only nation who wars, like most people tend to think. Or are led to believe, or society wants you to believe.

PEACE!!

trafficjay 3 years ago 3

lyablonski 3 years ago
Hey, I will go be banished with you and the music. I can sing like a rock and roll angel with soul. You would love that shit on your island! Also, we could plant as much mary joseph (marijuana) as we wanted to. I was already deciding to banish myself from society, anyway. Hahah.
Hit me up when you find your island.
