  • Dumbledore!!

  • This was an amazing series.

  • I love the way the Consultant sneaks a look at his watch - patients aren't supposed to express emotions on Ward Rounds. However, once they start to cry it's a bit rude to rush away...

This scene is so accurately observed!

  • who is this music by ?

  • @leftleggless Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians

  • @leftleggless I think it's Bach....

  • brilliant

  • No- it's "The Entry of the Queen of Sheba" by Handel.

  • Does anyonde knows who the classic music part maded? The part when the docters arrive to the hospital...

  • @floriswery Brandenburg concertos

  • This part NEVER gets old!

  • Poor Dumbledore!

  • Dennis Potter=Genius, Gambon on form =]

  • Yes ! Finally found out wot this program is ! Had a scene stuck in my head for the last 2-3 decades. Thought it woz this one but it's not, maybe the same episode. Woz he always burnt ? The scene is a nurse rubbing some cream on him or something and he starts getting an erection. Talking to himself, he says something like 'think of the blue peter dog' to stop his erection ! lol. Can anyone help with that scene or the name of the episode ?

  • @PermT According to the script it’s episode one. “Skin” I think it’s called:

”Think of something boring – For Christ’s sake think of something very very boring – Speech a speech by Ted Heath a sentence long sentence from Bernard Levin a quiz by Christopher Booker a – oh think think think - ! Really boring! A Welsh male-voice choir – Everything in Punch – Oh! Oh! – […]

  • Wage rates in Peru James Burke Finnegans Wake all the bloody irish the dog in Blue Peter blue Brian Clough and especially James Henry and Clive and Australian barmen ecologists semiologists think think the Guardian Women’s Page oh dear Christ yes the Bible and oh God Reader’s Digest Special Price Draw no the Bible think Bible Psalms Song of Solomony thy breasts are like – no no! – oh – oooh!”

  • @PermT And he isn't burnt - he has psoriatic arthropathy.

  • Kleiner!!!!

  • holy shit, Potter was a genius. Gambon likewise.

  • damn, this is sooo weird! Brilliant of course, but it is pure surrealism on screen. Unsurpassed!

  • the word genius is overused but not in the case of Dennis Potter

  • saw this in 80s , always stuck with me. he gives such a beautiful speech, such a lack of humanity. just great.

  • !?!?!?!?!

  • Tutor Choice

  • Hmm, I like the remake of this.

  • the most frightening thing about this video was the doctors. I've actually had doctors not listen to me. Tell them something, then they ask you a question for which you've just told them. Hmph!

  • Watched it for the first last year on DVD, was worried it wasn't going to live up to it's reputation but it was even better than I expected.

  • This is the best television show I've ever seen.

  • @tmeau - Exactly how I have felt about this for so long. So many absolutely priceless moments. : )

  • "......in this country." LOL

  • Casablinker - agreed! It just doesn't get better than this! (Potter wasn't rascist or sexist, though, I think. He just told it like it is. And it is often very dark indeed! Thank God for the songs! Elbow.)

  • very creepy... when it started to say knee bone all the way to toe bone....

  • This is genius. No show on British TV can compare in the modern day. It is racist and nasty and it is abusive of everyone. The Singing Detective is genius and I LOVE pOTTER

  • 'Pecker' has been a slang word for penis fo over 100 years in Britain

  • @Brooksider100 almost as old as calling it "cock" referring to a male chicken, hence the term "pecker"

  • @Overyde whats this argument about

  • Awesome.

  • anyone know where i can watch the full show online?

  • @weeburns91 Rent it however you can. It's absolutely engrossing, and well worth the price. I might even try to buy it so that I can loan it out to friends.

  • @weeburns91 someone did upload each episode in one continuous stream on youtube but i don't know if its still here.

  • They just randomly bursted into singing Dem Dry bones.

    ...

    ...

    AHAHAHA!

    ~~ Nemzal ~~

  • keep your pecker up old chap?? haha

  • I do beleive he says keep your "maker" up...pertains to an old English saying... but what the hell, anyway??

  • Um...! When a Brit says "keep your pecker up" they mean "stay happy, stay optimistic" or words to that effect. I don't know the origin, but I expect they mean "pecker" as in a bird's beak. Not a penis.

  • Yeah LOL...Its old skool ,Its like saying "Stiff upper lip" :P

  • What a JERK!!! Upside-down notebook,..."Be Precise!! Be Precise!!!" of course when Diagnosing an ailment, one Must be "Precise"...

  • Wow imelda was so young there xd she is the best!

  • "tootsie-wootsies" is now on "Law and Order"...

  • ANND YEWW RRR...Mister>>> (Marlowe...

  • Right up to the point where the doctors were actually confronted by the reality of thier patients suffering it was a totally realistic portrayal of a public hospital ward round. (Been there, done that).

  • I want to watch it all.

    Watch my videos.

  • The last time I experienced anything remotely like this was in my bloody pram being poked and drooled over my slobbering cretins...turned out to be escapees from the local loony bin. They thought they were doctors and nurses!

  • Ho Ho Heww!!! Ah Ha Ha Ha!!!

  • total dependancy...of a kind associated with Infancy.....HaHaHa...

  • This was on Dutch TV on sunday evenings when I was ermmmmm young, I used to watch it on my half-shoebox-sized TV in my bedroom to 'end the weekend'

  • tootsie wootsie

  • y is the guy in a diaper?

  • @garrettSlingerland not like he can walk to the bathroom with joints like that, he probably can't even pick his nose or hold a glass of water...

  • @MelleB90 It's not just joints. I have severe Psoriasis and Psoratic arthritis.. When you have severe plaque on your body you can not bend or move. Your skin litterally breaks open and bleeds. Luckily I was able to get on Humira which removed mine (not cured) but it stays away as long as I use it. When I stop it comes back faster and worse than ever, except my plaques cover my body in thicker scales.

  • Brilliant. Dennis Potter was a genius, Micheal Gambon was perfect too. Thanks Kogler.

  • boo

  • And you are Misterrr..

  • I had this music played at my mums funeral at her request she was arthritic twaz very appropriate.

  • I'm sorry.. Mister.. Marlowe?? of course. of course...Tootsi Wootsies, sir...

  • CyAtrogenic!!!...

  • Really amazing stuff. If you like detective stories, check out our new comedy/mystery web series "Get A Clue"!

  • One of the greatest scenes in the history of British television.

  • This scene is rather frightening...

WE're singing this in our chorale at my high school, but it's the original spiritual, so it's rather different.

  • I remember singing 'Dry Bones' with the High School Choir, and yes, it was different..but always a good show!!!...

  • remotely like this was in my Bloody Pan...they turned out to be escapees from the Local LooneyBin...

  • Oh, yes, Tootsie Wootsies...Mnn,..Prednisone...PredNisolone lengthening...they don't know what they're talkin' about...

  • What do U do..O, forgive me, ..what did U used to do...

  • hehe, this scene made me smile =P im watching it now, ive just watched the second

  • Be Pre-cise!!!

  • what an incredible writer

    what an incredible man

probably the best british writer of the last century

  • Dennis Potter's best work that is breathtaking in its depth, complexity and passion.

The period music is a joy.

Michael Gambon's performance as Phillip Marlow is outstanding.

  • I'm with Chrisharro.

Joanne Whalley. Fabulous! Truly the stuff of fable and legend!

What a tit Val Kilmer must be to get her then lose her!!)

  • "Any Odd Thoughts in the Brain Box, Old Chap??" Ya gotta be Kiddin!111

  • We don't allow Cats in the Ward in This Country...Hmmnn...

  • where can i download all the six episodes?

  • Surely this must be on DVD? I´m desperately hoping for reruns but they´re only showing that sad movie version with all of them Hollywood-actors in it...

  • I got my copy from Amazon. As far as I know they still stock it.

  • This is to balme for my love stockings and suspenders. Thank you Dennis for apssing on your fetishes.

  • I still love it!

am i right or am i right?

    :)

  • I know we're all supposed to be terribly intellectual in our responses to this brilliant programme, but does anyone else agree with me that Joanne Whalley as the Nurse is just about the sexiest creature ever to walk this earth on her hind legs?

  • You are quite correct, there...MMM,MMM...not many better than her...

  • who else do you like in the wide world??

  • Do you understand the question?

  • This is soo great..I remember watching.."Tootsie-Wootsies, Eh?"...how cool....

  • Astonishing indictment of the limitations and hubris of scientific medicine. The saddest thing is that, in the hands of a good TCM doctor, POtter's horror could at least been significantly alleviated if not totally cured.

  • I bought the DVD a few weeks ago - it is still the best TV programme ever produced and this is one of the best scenes from it. It has both pathos and humour.

  • First watched as a child now as an adult still find this production outstanding.

  • Dennis Potter reached his peak with The Singing Detective and this part of it is both brilliant and sad - a man trapped inside his own mind with a body that doesn't work - at times I think I know how he felt!

  • Best TV scene ever made!!

  • I'm tending to agree with you boretti1307.

  • Your loss young person.

My ... you are angry for a 12 year-old aren't you? Almost as pissed off as Michael Gambon's character. Is it living in Great Bend that has that effect on you?

  • yeah

  • Potter is simpley the best!

  • Many MANY thanks for putting this scene out there - I'm always howling with laughter at "Dry Bones".

  • Amazing acting writing Imelda Staunton and ....Joanne Whalley ...sigh what a stunning woman

  • very nice

  • Magnificent clip - I'd also forgotten how gorgeous Joanne Whalley was, cameoing in this clip as one of the dancing girls.

  • Great performance -among my all-time favs - Mike is great here

  • This is so great I'm doing my dissertation on it. Love it millions.

  • Great writing, outstanding performance by Michael Gambon, this is one of those "for all time" series. Thanks for the clip.

  • Michael Gambon is one talented actor.

  • I mis-typed "inspirational". Way to undermine my own point!

  • one of the best scenes ever put to celluloid

  • Classic scene. Love it!

  • Beautiful.Thank you.
