They built a museum at the site, which the spirits from the sands hotel came and haunted the museum. See the ghost adventure's las vegas museum episode.
I can't understand why are they demolishing historical and legendary buildings. Destroying their own heritage. Or like they sold the WW2 USS Enterprise to scrap. You don't do that, no matter how much money you can earn. In the end, the profit will be the death of them all.
I stayed at the Sands about a year before they demolished it, it was pretty run down. I figure the owners knew it couldn't compete with the new mega resorts springing up in the neighborhood.
They call this progress?! Whats the criteria for historical buildings? I'm not saying the Sand's, Dunes etc were historical, but they weren't even given a chance to get to that point!!! Even tho the Venetian, Bellagio etc are beautiful in their own majestic ways, the smaller more intimate casinos are whats Vegas is all about. I miss those casinos
I have to agree. I played Drums/Percussion at these imploded Hotels back in 74-81 and I liked their intimacy and charm. But what does charm have to do with Vegas anyway? :-)
I was there when the Sands was imploded. It was sad to see the historic building come down. I never got to see the inside when it was open but I always thought it was a cool looking building from the outside.
I have to admit though that I love the Venetian that took it's place is my favorite hotel ever but it's still a shame the Sands had to come down.
I know everyone is talking about the Hotel and Sinatra links etc (which why I came across it) but does anyone know who played the background music over the clip?
Vinnie- I was there, right across Sands Ave, when the Sands came down. A good chunk of the Vegas population came out that night to say goodbye to the old place, and there were a lot of tears behind the cheering. We gave the old place a real Vegas farewell.
It's quite sad to hear people cheering for the destruction of the "Sands", one of the landmark Las Vegas hotels. Legends like the Rat Pack, who performed at the Sands gave Las Vegas its heart and soul, its character......
Hehe, looks like WTC7 on 9/11. First blow the basement, then the midction supporting columns and put in explosives on every other floor. A boom and a bang and a building is down in seconds. 9/11 wasn't so hard to stage after all, esp. with Marvin Bush in charge of WTC security.
In 1980 when the top Casino hosts moved their people to the Desert Inn.. that is when the magic left the Sands. Frank would not have had a problem with the old girl imploding.
does anyone feel the sadness i feel when u c the origin of las vegas go down in 30 seconds after these great hotels were up 30+ years to make it what it is today? without the sands or the stardust vegas wouldnt have existed

The sands was the first hotel I ever stayed in, in Vegas. It was a wonderful hotel. Very pretty view of their quite little pool. Sigh

Have you been to vegas lately?
I love the history to the old casinos but they need to make room for the billion dollar resorts that keeps Vegas ahead of any other cities.

Not true TLAGT. The Sands hotel was a unique property.
