  • Would love to see a review on linuxmint 12 KDE.

  • How Can i upgrade to Linuxmint 12 From The TERMINAL.. i Got Ubuntu

  • @henrypr You're better off just installing Linux Mint 12 you could add the Mint 12 repos to your sources.list and upgrade that way but I can't promise you that you wouldn't run into any issues.

  • Thanks for the review! I'm nixing Vista as my primary OS as it's suffering heavily from winrot. I've used Ubuntu with moderate ease and success in the past but now I've been looking for something a bit more streamlined and I think I've found it. Gnome3 is a big selling point as I'm not a huge fan of the Unity interface so I'll be giving this an install momentarily. Thanks again for the informative review!

  • Awesome video already subscribed, quick question about the video though. How do I move my time over to the middle of the screen its bothering me and looking clustered towards the right.

    thanks!

  • @aflyingcripple You have to go into gnome-tweak-tool and disable the "Notification" extension...I'm pretty sure that's the one that controls the clock position.

  • @OhHeyItsLou Thanks for the speedy reply. That was it, and you just have to log out and log back on afterwards.

  • your write is tenable i think i keep to windows

  • why dose it look diffrent

  • i diss agree i like stuff on my desk top if i did not i would not put nothing there so why take it out

  • I saw recently Mint has a new fork of Gnome3 called Cinnamon, I know its still in a early testing stage, perhaps if you get time you could review it at some point in the future.

  • @aadenne I will send you a link on Spotify. You can install ".deb" files by double clicking to install just like ".exe" files in windows.

  • I had the opportunity to experiment with Mint 12 as well. Being I am a devout KDE, user this is quite a triumph indeed. LOL!!!!! I can agree with your assessments of Mint. I do have a problem with using third party software to tweek Mint as well. However I like the slightly new look of Gnome 3 and allows additional room for further exploration in the future. Great post!!!!

  • You should repeat that tutorial with installing kernel, but this time on Mint :) And yes, same as usual, i have one question. How's that that you "prefer" Mint with Ubuntu base over Mint with Debian testing base? I mean after all in debian testing you are more on that "bleeding edge", at least i think so...

  • @DARTHZANRUIT Thanks a lot, but that gave me an error during the process.

It says: RuntimeError: called outside of a mainloop.

What does that mean, and how can I fix that?

  • @blackoutworm try re-running it and if it happens again, go to your terminals and install the following sudo apt-get install build-essential kernel-package libncurses5-dev bzip2 fakeroot

    sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

  • @DARTHZANRUIT tried to re-run it, didn't work. All the packages you mentioned were already installed.

The complete message I get is:

Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/local/share/kernelcheck/scripts/build.py", line 174, in close gtk.main_quit()

RuntimeError: called outside of a mainloop

  • It's nice to see reviews of distros running natively unlike some dodgy review running in a VM. In all fairness reviewers should try installing on different hardware as the results can vary dramatically especially when using Nvidia or ATI setups.

Downloading Mint at the moment to check what they've made of Gnome-shell / MATE.

ps Have you tried Y PPA Manager ? and thanks for the review :)

  • Looking at the train in the background I realized Linux Mint is a OS made for the Packers

  • Very good review. I personally like Mate. I think what they are doing is great. And gnome 3 for me is just one of these things that shouldn't have happen.

I'm glad it works for you, but I like Compiz and in generally the ability to customize gnome 2 as I want.

is there a newbie friendly way to customize my own kernel?

Are there any gui software I can use that will allow me to automatically compile the kernel based on my hardware. Or something like that? Sorry, I don't really know the process:)

  • thanks for a great review

  • Yep, awesome as usual. You're doing great, Lou.

  • Nice vid, as always :)

  • Thumbs up, very fair well balanced review
