the best and easiest way to get rid of hairy algae is to take out your rocks put them in a bucket of tank water and scrub them with a rough brush and put them back , problem solved
@allSaLTwater It's a type of diatom (Sp?) you usually get in a new tank. Or from poor circulation. I know there are other causes but I'm not sure on that one. But you could try pointing your powerhead in a different direction to have even flow. Or if you don't have one, you can get one and it should help some. I have Koralia's.
A couple of mollies in your tank could keep your tank green and red slim algae free.... Mollies are the best algae eaters ever..... They can be converted gradually from fresh water to salt water.
i had the same problem !!! i had hairy green aglae and red slime . so what i did was i needed to get my phosphate at zero !!! use a phosphate reactor and upgraded my protien skimmer , did a 20 % water change . in a mouth every it all clear up .

There are three things that green algae feed off of... Phosphates, nitrates, and light... use Phosban filter to get rid of phosphates... cut your light cycle and skim skim skim... don't over feed and do your water changes... you should be fine then...
As far as i can see heir algae is not the biggest issue you have.(bleny, Foxface and few snails will do the job). Red slime algae is a problem it is actually not a "true" algae at all, but classified as a cyanobacteria. Often considered to be the evolutionary link between bacteria and algae. (nobody eats it).
You must use RO Water to get rid of green hair algae. It's the only water that is clean enough. Read up on it. Any tap or bottled water still has to many nutrients in the water. RO Water is the only water that has Zero Nutrients, and then you add the salt which has it's own nutrients. Making the perfect water for a marine tank.
the only thing you did to help get rid of green hair/ red slime algae is start using filtered water? i'm having the same problem but i just got a lawnmower blenny and he's doing a good job with the green hair.. won't touch the red slime though so i'll have to try and kill that off but don't have ro/di
Odd though because since switching to RO water, it helped tons. My green hair algae is 90% gone! Except I haven't done a water change in a month and got a bunch of red slime algae. I've been a bit busy. :( I know a Lawnmower Blenny helps but I was afraid that it might be slightly aggressive towards my Mandarin.
This is not cheap..only with a few problem.get some cleaning crew or keep on trubleshotin, once u get it,ur work will be more worth it from the experience you hav gain than those punk who spent too much on this hobby.more than he spent for themselve..so keep up the good work.
Thanks! Levels were perfect after switching to filtered water. I added more Astrea snails and a small Tuxedo Urchin. More than half of that algae is gone... it's almost gone. :) :) Plus, I'm upgrading to a 100 gallon tank and my fish will LOVE that upgrade :) Will post a video of it in the future. Huge protein skimmer, huge refugium, huge lights, and loving it!
Yep, my update says I've gotten rid of it. But I'm still battling the green hair algae. I just have to buy more clean up crew. It's growing way too fast. But no red slime... all gone.
@fishman476 If I ever have this problem, I'll do the sea hare. I tried it in the tank in this video but they always died on me. After the second one, I didn't want to kill a third. Since this video, I tore this one apart and now have a 100 gallon tank. No hair algae in there.
Although its really tempting to get all the colorful fish that look cool, often times its better for the overall tank to acquire creatures with awesome beneficial abilites and sacrafice on their appearance, even the ugly fish with less coloration need a safe home where they can prosper. Im gonna upload some pics of my tank, I have some algae sparkin up in my tank too, im gonna look into snails, they always have awesome survivability and munch algae like no others
That Blenny annoyed my other fish though. lol I know what you mean by tempting. I've seen tons that have like 3 tangs in a BioCube like mine!! I actually want to stock up on Astrea snails. I had only 4 and in the course of 8 months, they've died off. My Blue Legged Hermits probably has something to do with it. But thank you for your optimism. I always try to be as positive as I can. I'm glad to say though, my tank is in better shape than this video. But this green hair algae is a big pest!
This last guy is overreacting a bit, remember it is a constantly evolving habitat as in nature, algae is very effective at surviving as evolution has shown us. The only point I can agree on is that money should not be an issue with this hobby because it does cost but algae has little to do with cheapness. Just start small and find out how much life your pocketbook can sustain do a lil research to find critters that feast on hair algae I would recommend a crab, maybe some pods or BLENNY R AWESOME
Yeah, I actually get more accepting behavior here and out of town where I buy most of my stuff. They actually smile and say that you haven't been in saltwater long enough if you haven't gotten green hair algae. That guy really offended me though because I did A LOT of research when I began. I never went cheap. But of course, I made a mistake with tap water. I'm actually going to up my snails 'cause I only see a few. I had a Lawnmower Blenny but died when I was away in Rome. :(
People shouldn't be in this hobby if they think of money. This is what happens when people go cheap on saltwater setups. Believe me saltwater tanks are not cheap and you have to spend at least 10-15 minutes per day with it to eliminate the algae. RO water is highly recomend it and should only be use.
No need to be rude but I know exactly what you mean. I'm using nothing but RO water now and looking around for an RO unit because I just bought a 100 gallon tank. I do spend more than 15 minutes checking out my tank every day. I know it's not cheap, I knew it was gonna be expensive, and I tell others the same thing. And I didn't go cheap... ONLY thing I did was the water. But since the video, I've switched to RO water.
People HAVE to think of money. I have to save up to buy the good stuff. I bought a 100 gallon tank & because of that, I have to keep myself at a budget in order to afford a good refugium, pump, lights, etc. But I do agree that people can't go cheap with saltwater... that doesn't mean you have to be rude about it because I used tap water. That hang on refugium was there to try & reduce algae & to build a colony of food for my Mandarin. I have to be honest, I'm offended by your comment.
i have the same problem, except i have this dust in there its all over my rock, algae and sand its very annoying trying to hose it out but it seems like only more comes, i start up the skimmer, it starts a storm any reccomendations?
I actually have a friend who has trouble with this "dust" and most of the time, it's usually because of lack of current. I have the regular filter running plus a Koralia #1 powerhead.
Since this video, I still have green hair algae but just in the center of the tank. But the red algae has disappeared since switching to filtered water. :)
Snails and hermit crabs help with some algae. They can also help with the "dust."
Oh I know. I used to have a Lawnmower Blenny & maybe he's the reason why I never got an algae problem in the first place. But to be honest, he would annoy my other fish. lol Which is why I haven't bought another one again.
I'm thinking about getting one though. It has gotten better since then actually. I cut down the light from 12 to 8 hours & started using filtered water. It actually made a difference!! It's not gone though but getting there. Bought a tiny Yellow Tang (temp) & more snails.
Still have about the same amount of algae. Less of the red algae though. I bought more Blue Legged Hermits, Cerith Snails, Astrea Snails, Nassarious Snails, & Turbo Snails.
I've switched to filtered water. Using tap water is where my extra nutrients were coming from. I only feed once a day to reduce any extra nutrients as well.
Check for nutrients
