  • the kata was fairly good but i have a few things that could be improved in my opinion.

during the first side kicks you should try to remove as much upper body movement as possible.

during you cat stance i would recomend that you bend your supporting knee alot more

when you do the front kick into the sumo stance you get into a very low stance straight away but then you go higher. i would recomend that you either try to stay low or that you try to land directly into the stance you will maintain

  • Great kata i'm trying to learn the pattern at the moment and this is a great help to me

  • I found the video a true representation of what you thought this kata should be and how it should be performed. I hoped you learned from your experience. After reading your comments, I was dissapointed at your representation as your grading would suggest a higher understanding. Perhaps this is something to work on.

  • you clearly have no idea what you are watching, and mr wato is clueless as to what he is doing, thats fine just dont set yourself up as a teacher of karate, its dishonest.

  • I don't know what hssp900 was watching but I saw speed, power, focus and poise. The kata was not rushed nor was it sloppy. One heck of a great performance !!!! Thank you for demonstrating excellent skill, sir ! Osu !!!

  • thank you buddhastrike for your kind comments.

however i will say that while hssp900 was a little harsh and did lack some humility when propted he did give me some good tips to improve my kata.

so while it would have been nice to be given his tips in a more respectful manor i did come away with some things to go away and work on - which is one of the reasons i posted this video in the first place. regardless of how i was told, i lernt something new and i'm greatful for that!

    Osu!!!

  • Yes, sometimes it is better to slow the inividual moves of the kata down slightly, and move for accuracy, control and correct, solid technique rather than let too much speed and rushing remove those qualities from the kata to make it look faster.

  • So, he wears a black belt but is not a dan grade,he also teaches and calls himself sensei, and you dont see whats wrong with this, you sound like one of the door knockers for this scam, you and your pals have been rumbled, ill give you three more years max.

  • would you care to expand on your last post? what is my kata lacking in your opinion?

despite your lack of respect i am always willing to take advise...

besides i can't think of many things more budo than being willing to take advise from anyone who gives it, i don't know who you or anyone else giving me advise is, you could be a 9th kyu or a 9th dan for all i know but if i get some good advise it doesn't matter and i would apreciate any tips/advise that helps me to improve.

  • @watosensei I will offer a critique: your kata lacks a bunkai approach and your dachi are not being used. The tempo and tone of a particular technique or combination of techniques should be based on knowledge of applying them. Determine how the kata is going to be approached by practicing the bunkai with an opponent then take that practice into the kata. A simple example: practice gyaku zuki from neko ashi dachi without contact. Then, do the same against a partner with contact. See #2

  • @watosensei #2 The need to brace for contact changes the dachi and the kamae and that is the technique taken into kata practice. Your hips show that you are "up" meaning they are not rooted in the stance or they are not being used. Dachi are not just a "karate form," they are for specific use. Zenkutsu dachi, forward weighted stance, is for the generation of power to the front. It has a momentary use and once that use is terminated, the position becomes unnecessary. see #3

  • @watosensei #3 Neko ashi dachi is a very specialized and unique stance. Because one leg is in use much more than the other, opposing loading of the legs for strength and stability is not as good. The use of the trunk and hips becomes more pronounced in this position as an upright kamae from this dachi is very weak. Generally, the trunk tends to be angled forward, the hips slightly extended rearward and down in the legs. Use of the stance will train your individual form as a person.

  • p.s remeber those who have bad experiences tend to be much more vocal than those who have good experiences -

don't hold the whole of gkr accountable to a few negative comments, there are some fantastic karate-ka that train and teach with gkr.

i know gkr isn't perfect and they don't profess to be, many disagree with there 'marketing' or business' methods but the style of karate when taught correctly is as good as any other.

  • stances were a bit high in some places, dunno about injuries. i think hssp900 missed a few lessons on humility at his last training session. besides he's not dan grade, they have provisional in gkr, before dan grade and it's a second dan kata. true karate-ka would not go looking for tips on performing their katas on youtube, and slag other people off

i trained in gkr for ten years, and it's been a good base for converting into an effective balance of kickboxing and karate.

  • Also, you do not have to have achieved a black belt to become an instructor, but you do need to be minimum of green belt (7th Kyu), minimum age 16, and of competence and understanding of basic GKR skills in order for your Sensei to deem you worthy enough to submit you to the Sensei Training Program, where a senior instructor then judges you on the quality of your karate & knowledge. This takes 6-12 weeks to complete, and if the instructor deems you competent, he will grant you a sempaiship

  • hssp900 go bug someone else you pest!

  • Comment removed

  • If this kata is an indication of the standard of a gkr dan grade, its no wonder they have such a poor reputation.

true karateka have no need to post videos of themselves on youtube and to post ones that show such an obvious lack of understanding of even the basic concepts of karate-do is frankly embarrasing.

  • that's just your opinion. i believe in democracy and freedom of information ;-)

  • Hey that was awesome what grade are you? I am 13 and 2nd Kyu, also are you going to the world titles in melbourne this year?

  • cheers man. i'm a shodan ho.

    yer i'm going the worlds - can't wait. r u going?

  • that was utterly brilliant-well done sensei-also well done on your black belt as well:)

i think youre signature is speed and power, and it makes the kata seem impressive.

i dont really know what to pick you up on,as im far away from needing this kata yet;) but i would say that the cat stances looked a bit high up-i dont know if you have any knee problems or not,i just thought it looked a bit too high up-all in all, really impressive;)

    how did you do anyway?

  • thanks very much -

i managed to walk away with double silver on the day (quite happy, but know theres things i could have done better and will be working on them, as long as i don't make the same mistakes twice i'll be happy)

as for my cat stance(open and normal) it's my ankles which seem to be fused in a position i cant push past at the moment - but i will keep working on them and hopefuly i will get lower and lower.

thanks again for your comments, much apreciated.

  • no problem mate:)

well ok,i think the ankles really are pressure points when it comes to doing advanced stances,so i know you probably try your best anyway;)

oh yeah,i was just wondering, what kata are you allowed to go up to in an instructor divison?-i dont know if you know or not,so i just want to make sure;)

im asking this since im doing kanku-dai for the next tournament i june and am going to be in the instructor males divison

  • in the instructors you can go up to kanku dai/kururunfa. so yes kanku dai is fine. it's a great kata!!! it's one of the highest kata you can do in that div so the judges expect you to deliver when they hear you anounce that - give it 100% and have good timing (don't rush and have good stops and pauses, then explode) and i'm sure you can do very well with it - good luck!

  • ok thanks-just wanted to know

kanku-dai is defenitely one of my fave katas to perform, and ive been told that its my best kata apart from seiunchin as well-apparently no-one can do the kanku-dai shuffle like me(i aint bragging, thats just what have been told).

i always try to give it 100%,and thanks for the reassurance;)

which region do you train in?

  • liverpool - u???

sounds like it'll be a good kata then! you god a vid of it? post it - i would quite like to see it...

1 question though - if seunchin is your best kata, why do you want to do kanku dai? is it cos your not getting results with seunchin or just you want to change cos you've been doing it for a long time?

  • i train in R30,nottingham.

yeah, ive been doing seiunchin for over five tournaments in a row,and i achieved four medals over that time-two gold(one at the nationals,16-20 6th-4th kyu)) one silver and one bronze, but after the last tournament i felt that it was time to move on to a different kata, and kanku-dai was certainly a logical choice fgor me;)

  • i was going to go but i havetn trained in a while lol
