Hey, I've downloaded the file and I can open ss.exe but when I try to enable mouselook in the dos menu I get an error message that says windows can't find 7za.exe, even though i can clearly see that file in the folder marked RES, but more importantly when I press b in the main menu like it says in the quick start guide the program closes and nothing happens. any ideas? thank you.
I used to play games like CoD. When I borrowed SS2 from my cousin, I re-examined re-re-re-re....I re-examined my priorities, and drew new conclusions. My cousins work is finished, but mine is only just beginning

Why can't developers make games like this anymore? I'm tired of the glorified movies that pass as "shooters" today. The problem is, everyone in my generation would rather play those god-awful, glorified movies rather than games like this. System Shock looks really deep and atmospheric.
Seriously, the games that come out these days are so unoriginal and boring that it makes me want to sell my PS3 and use the money to buy a DOS and a Sega Master System for good measure. It's depressing.
@spicyechidna94 there is a reason for that. the new world order is real. everything is clear when you assemble the puzzle pieces.
im amazed that deus ex tells soo much truth and i havent even ever played it, even thought i've been playing video games my whole life, downloading it now though.
@fmth1311 If that's the case, I'm not fan of the "new world order". It just sounds like a "let's pander to the ultra-casual gamers who dislike any sort of complexity in their games because it makes more money" scheme. I assembled the pieces long ago and it STILL manages to piss me off.
Gamers will never see another revolution like Half-Life or System Shock because "new ideas" and "innovation" are dirty words in an industry dominated by boring interactive movies that pass as "games".
@TGram29 No, not at all. I own five different game consoles as well as a laptop, which essentially my gaming PC. I play on consoles more than I play PC games, to be honest. My Genesis and Dreamcast have gotten a lot of use lately.
I'm just tired of shit that passes as "games" these days. In spite of more powerful hardware, gaming has taken a step back in terms of complexity and interactivity. Games are trying to hard to be movies when they should be trying to be games.
@TGram29 What about it? It looks like a bastardized version of Deus Ex, complete with regenerating health and simplified inventories. Seriously, tell me what is so special about current-generation games. I can't find anything.
@TGram29 No plot? Did you even watch this video? System Shock obviously has a plot. But even if it didn't, that wouldn't make a difference. It's abut the gameplay, not trying to look like a movie. Does Pac-Man have a plot? No. Does that make it a bad game? No.
Once again, you have failed to tell me why new games are so much better than these "shitty old games". You just avoid my question every time. It is your right to like new games better, but at least tell me why.
@TGram29 Okay, seriously, I give up. You haven't answered a single question I've asked you, so believe what you want to believe and keep playing what amounts to glorified movies these days.
Seeing as you can't name a single gameplay element that supposedly makes new games so much better, it leads me to believe you've never played an old-school game in your life, or if you have, you never even gave it chance. This argument isn't worth my time. Goodbye.
@spicyechidna94 Ignore him. He is obviously trolling or he probably didn't grow up during the golden era of videogames when stories and gameplay mattered more than shiny graphics. Let's just enjoy the awesome video together. <3
@NeuroticDummy I didn't grow up during the golden age of gaming either, but at least I know my head from my ass when it comes to what makes a shooter great and it sure as hell isn't "regenerating health". I think a great story can help a game, but it's still secondary to gameplay. If integrated well, however, the story can improve the game a lot.
I apologize if I sound exasperated, but I'm just tired of the strictly-current-generation gamers and their ignorance of older games.
@spicyechidna94 I agree with you for the most part, but I disagree with the new Deus Ex. I have played the leaked Beta, The game is definitely better then Invisible War, and stays true to the first game. Your health regenerates slowly, It's pretty much like having the level 1 regeneration augmentation always activated, On Normal difficulty, I go down in 3 shots. It doesn't turn you into a one man army as in, lets say Call of Duty. It's more of saving you the trouble of hunting down medkits.
@skytop082 I've never had the pleasure of playing any Deus Ex game, but I've been meaning to lately.
Okay, I'll admit that I don't mind health that regenerates slowly, like in Metal Gear Solid 3, or even a hybrid of the standard health pack/regenerating health systems, but I can't stand that "hide behind a wall a heal gaping bullet holes in one's body in five seconds" nonsense. It takes the skill out of the gameplay.
@spicyechidna94 It's not that way, It's very similar to Metal Gear Solid 3s system, it regenerates slowly over time, while there are items you can use to speed up the regeneration (IE: Painkillers, Candy Bars.) The hub cities are very open, There are plenty of sidequests in each of them, there is a lot of exploring to do,many conversations to listen to, and Newspapers/Ebooks you can read. If I had to compare it to any other game besides the first Deus Ex. I would say it's like Mass Effect.
@spicyechidna94 Nope, There is a leaked beta for it that is the first hour of the game. From what I played, it seems worthy of the Deus Ex title. I recommend playing the first game, It's right next to System Shock on my favorite classic games list. The full game releases August 23rd.
@TGram29 No, They have half-baked gameplay with better graphics, and no modding community, and they also cost $10 more then they did back in the day. So you're getting a game that is less fun, more costly, and gets boring 5x as fast then a game like Half Life, Unreal Tournament, Quake, Doom, or System Shock. On the bright side. "Oh look, that wall has a little more detail, but I'm obviously going to be more focused on the bad guy in front of me then staring at the scenery"
@TGram29 They also have DRM, that punishes you for purchasing the game instead of pirating a cracked version, they are hard coded, making modding impossible, so instead of you being able to download a universe of user created content, you have to pay $20, Which is pretty much the rest of the game that is just withheld and sold later to earn more money. Games last 6 months, before another rushed sequel is announced, as opposed to games like Deus Ex, or System Shock, that are still played today.
Bioshock? CoD BlackOps? do you even have a slightest idea when does SS came out? your saying as if Bioshock, CoDBlackOps and System Shock being released around the same time.
Its like you existed THEN you gave birth to your mother and father. Stupid fool
@gerubax Wow I didnt know how stupid people were on the internet until I read this, maybe you were high or something. So re read the post and tell me where I mention the date of a games release coinsides with how good it is
@KillSwitch66627 lol you can't understand what my reply to you? you read back your post, then back to mine. Read it slow and steady, or you gonna miss out what you said and mine.
And you called people stupid? you are chronically wrong fool
Seriously you think of yourself, where can you go?
Go and play those games that you love so much and never achieved anything in your life.
@gerubax There was no argument in what you just replied lol. You must do a lot of drugs to be this daft seriously.... I never said the value of the games coinsides with the dates they were released you simply tried to invent that argument. And are you like, retarded or something?
"Seriously you think of yourself, where can you go?"
I dont care if you call that text speech or shortening, thats just plain fucking retarded. L2 English. Oh and self centered.... we are talking about games
@KillSwitch66627 This arguement will go nowhere, you will continue your job arguing and i dont have a clue as to why you love it. Your most favourite game is not bioshock or CODBO or anything else, its arguement. And seeing you versus others. What is wrong with you?
Do alot of drugs? Is that common to get where you are from? Stupid lay off those drugs and find something better to do.
I'm done with you, Kill your switch im done feeding you with arguements. Stop this nonsense and relax.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Im going to do it again, this is a bullshit excuse of a game and doesnt deserve to be in any relation to the epic franshise that is bioshock in any shape or form. CODBO was better than this, yeah I went there.
Kid. You're comparing games from 2008 - 2011 to a game from the 90's. You, kid, have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about. And by the way.. It's "franchise" not "franshise".
Well.. Go play your "Black Cocks", kid, we could care less.
@Wolfir11 You're the second person to judge a game due to its release (and like, the 20th person to use name calling), the over use of the word kid is hilarious coupled with the over use of commas; yet you attack me about mispelling a word... I NO I DONE FAILED MY INTERNET ENGLASH EGSAM!
SS I was a real tech breakthrough in 1994. I still recall my state of wondering just by walking the citadel Station (very pixelated, true, but we were amazed by the experience). Could you imagine it done with today's tech?
i've played this game through more times than i can count. and i've got to say it has one of the best intros ever. for its time it was one of the best games ever made and to this day packs a punch like you wouldn't believe.
you want to know what hard core gaming is really like? play this game with the timer on, hard enemies, dificult puzzles and you lights out.
Even though they've moved on to Bioshock, including the new one in the air city. I think it would be interesting to see a revisit to the old System Shock environment.
@themasteriswatching I think enough amateur and semi-pro artists and programmers were influenced so heavily by this game that an illicit remake is a definite possibility...
well, this might be the best fps ever, shodan is one of the greatest villains ever, and to answer some questions:
-in the first one, you are the hacker, you've been doing some nasty things and they caught you, so the bad guy asks you to make a deal: they'll clean your record if you do some "tweaks" on Shodan for him . you do the tweaks and shodan goes self aware, and becomes a crazy dominatrix bitch from hell that wants to take over the universe and stuff, and you humanity's last hope
Man, best game ever. I got the 4MB on floppies when this came out. System Shock was easily 10 years ahead of its time. Also, most under appreciated game ever!
@that1dude0092 When I went to level 3, that was FAR, FAR worse than the gravity mutants
Reasons?
The entire level is swathed in darkness
There appears to be no music at all, just a strange rippling noise
And...those horrible, killer, INVISIBLE mutants.
mercifully, you don't have to spend that long on the level (only destroy the comp nodes, get the laser rapier and i think there is a magnum 2100 on that level too.
aaaw good old times, this game had only one flaw - they had to put the "locate you hacker ...." line in the sound card selection setup. I pissed my pants with fear when I tried to set the sound up !
I reeeeex reereee reeeeeee .... I reexamine my priorities
in my opinion, the Bioshock series is better than the System Shock series. the reasons being that Bioshock has better graphics, WAY simpler controls, wider enemy variety and is all around more exciting. saying that the Bioshock series copied off of the SS series is just a stupid argument because the were made by the same devs. it's just like they were refining their idea ten years later. though, i will admit, horrible graphics aside, SS series is scarier than the Bioshock series.
@windwaker1994 Not really fair comparing a 15 year old game to a game released less than 3 years ago. System Shock has it's place in history, with a true 3d engine (not a 2d plane displayed in 3d like Doom was), great variety in weapons and opponents, and a great story.
Bioshock is good too, but I think if System Shock was re-released now, with modern graphics, and an updated control scheme, it would beat Bioshock hands-down.
@kaintaka no doubt. if System Shock was re-released, it'd be pretty amazing and could probably top Bioshock easily. especially if they kept the same level of horror and unexpected startles but got rid of the repetition.
@windwaker1994 thing do tend to get better as tech gets better.....but then i'd go ahead and say super mario 3 is the best video game ever. True to me maybe not to others though.

I enjoyed this video very much...... Oh whats that, no no I did'nt enjoy the game featured at all, I did however find the responses of all these fat ass 30 year old nerds trying to relive the good old days of pixelated graphics hilarious.... Learn to spot trolls and go get a life guys
Most trolls don't return to the scene of the trolling after like, four months, in order to confirm that they are not REALLY faggots and were, in fact. only trolling. Which leads me to believe a. that 'faggot' comment really hit a nerve, and b. you are STILL a faggot, as you were four months ago, only now you're ashamed of it and are probably trying to subconsciously atone for said faggotry.
tl;dr: take that faggot dick out of your mouth and try again, faggot.
@KurtH no actually, I was replying to a resent reply to my comment, and by your reply I see that you took the fat ass 30 year old nerd comment to heart..... cause you are
@KillSwitch66627 Wow aren't you just a lovable little D-bag, you don't have to be old to enjoy old games in fact compared to new games SS SS2 Deus Ex and a number of other old FPS' still stomp the shit outta newer Shooters,If I had a choice between a new copy of CODMW2 or a new copy of SS I'd take CODMW2 just so I can wipe my ass with it. Fuck you. And have a nice lonely alienated life.
Good for you, man. I'm 23, and finished the original DX ages ago, but, like you, not when it was brand new. This was probably like.. 2006-ish. I played SS2 for the first time in '05, and it blew my mind. I remember, for Christmas of '95(or maybe '96), my dad bought a new Pentium 1 200mhz motherboard for our old 486 along with a(at the time) high-end 12x CD-ROM drive. The enhanced CD version of SS1 was one of the very first games I got on CD. Here's to revisiting the classics =D
@vOddy75@vOddy75 I just can't understand why you pathetic attention whores always have to state how old you are. So who the fuck cares if you are 18? Does this make the game better or worse? You are here to get brownie points? People's approval and cheer? (well done boy, you are 18 and you play these games, we are so proud of you!) Really pathetic, don't you think?
@KillSwitch66627 Go and get a life yourself, you stupid trolling noob
PIXELATED GRAPHICS ARE AWESOME
Good name, 'killswitch'
Suits you.

- The Brilliant Awesome Cool Game, System Shock (1994), when you destroy the computer nodes on level 1
whats the story line to this? i love the Bioshock games, some1 mentioned that this was sort of similar in some ways and was created by the same ppl (i think)
well it's a bit hard to tell you about it without spoiling the plot for you but..
SPOILER
When the hacker awake, he sees that the robots of the station seems to have run amok, and that mutated being are roaming around. Someone contact him from earth to tell him that they've lost contact with the rest of the station, and that they know about the deal he made with dieo, so he'd better help.
...
In fact, all of this is related to the hacker's work with shodan...
WTF!! Neural Cyberspace interfaces are illegal! The UNN general assembly ruled against them repeatedly, just because you're in orbit around Saturn DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN IGNORE THE LAW. It really angers me to hear this. Also it sounds like that Shodan thing might well be in violation of the UNN processing rationalization act. This needs to be investigated!! Also, that can't be the same Edward Diego... the Hero of Boston harbor during the eastern states police action?? Same name I guess.
Neural Cyberspace Interfaces were only given to the Military. They became illegal after the fiasco on Citadel Station. As for the Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network AI, again, lockouts were imposed due to the Citadel incident. Take Xerxes, the AI for the Van Braun FTL vessel.
Lastly, Edward Diego isn't the hero of the Boston Harbor Police Action, his son, William Bedford Diego was.
@kaintaka Okay. I'm not too good with names.... Edward, Bedford. I'd forgotten the specifics of the Citadel Fiasco as you call it. I thought this was referencing something new but yeah apparently this is just some trailer for a movie based on the Citadel incident or something. It would be nice if they changed some of the names because it's unfair to besmirch the name Diego he's a hero for stopping those criminals in Boston (who would have created another SHODAN had they not been stopped)
Just finished the game and is TOTALLY a must play. At first i dint want to play it because of the controls.. cuz practically theres a button for everything but somehow i manage to get the hang of it in 15 min. and it was pretty confortable. Well the game is a masterpiece plot, gameplay, sounds, main villian, npc's, everything. Just download it and give it a shot.
@nooblet911 sure they did. games like metal gear solid and the first halo. however, 90% of the stuff that comes out for these systems nowadays are just lame-ass sequels attempting to cash in on the success and originality of the first games.
@Muzzleflash219 thats bullshit. ive been a console gamer my entire life, and they always amaze me with the originality, and quality of new games coming out. i dont care what gaming format its in, i appreciate a kickass game for what it is, a kickass game. i advise you do the same, and dont get involved in the petty squabbling of whos game player is best, just because you dont have one that somebody else does. its immature, and it blinds you from the immense talent in the medium as a whole.
I'm not saying all console games are bad. I like Halo 1 and I love all of the Metal Gear Solids. What pisses me off are the people who think MW2 is the greatest game ever. The first MW was good because it was something different, but all they did with the 2nd one was add more multiplayer features and a forgettable 4 hour campaign. They should have just called it MW 1.5, because the formula is pretty much unchanged yet they make MILLIONS, and heaven forbid Cpt. Price dying.
For example I bought Half-Life 2 when ValvE released it back in '04. I still play it to this day, although to be honest rarely the vanilla version. I've had hours and hours of fun playing the game itself, the gajillion multi and singleplayer mods that have come out for it. All for absolutely FREE. You know where I see MW2 players in 6 years? Not playing MW2. Not because it has no replay value (which it does), but because they'll be playing MW5 or whatever.
@Muzzleflash219 i honestly dont care that much for MW2, except for its multiplayer. i do love a lot of other console games out there though. i honestly am having a hard time thinking, so i cant think of them all but whil there are some franchises that have kindof just cashed in, there are also a lot more out there that are still making the best games ive ever seen!
waths the story of the game? are you that naked guy on the sleep camera? and a hacker make a fucking mega AI computer become...........satanic and put a lot of demonic robots to kill you?
Hey, I've downloaded the file and I can open ss.exe but when I try to enable mouselook in the dos menu I get an error message that says windows can't find 7za.exe, even though i can clearly see that file in the folder marked RES, but more importantly when I press b in the main menu like it says in the quick start guide the program closes and nothing happens. any ideas? thank you.

Bioshock? CoD BlackOps? do you even have a slightest idea when does SS came out? your saying as if Bioshock, CoDBlackOps and System Shock being released around the same time.
Its like you existed THEN you gave birth to your mother and father. Stupid fool
gerubax 9 months ago
@gerubax Wow I didnt know how stupid people were on the internet until I read this, maybe you were high or something. So re read the post and tell me where I mention the date of a games release coinsides with how good it is
KillSwitch66627 8 months ago
@KillSwitch66627 lol you can't understand what my reply to you? you read back your post, then back to mine. Read it slow and steady, or you gonna miss out what you said and mine.
And you called people stupid? you are chronically wrong fool
Seriously you think of yourself, where can you go?
Go and play those games that you love so much and never achieved anything in your life.
Self-centered fool
gerubax 8 months ago
@gerubax There was no argument in what you just replied lol. You must do a lot of drugs to be this daft seriously.... I never said the value of the games coinsides with the dates they were released you simply tried to invent that argument. And are you like, retarded or something?
"Seriously you think of yourself, where can you go?"
I dont care if you call that text speech or shortening, thats just plain fucking retarded. L2 English. Oh and self centered.... we are talking about games
KillSwitch66627 8 months ago
@KillSwitch66627 Regardless whatever you talk about, and please think. You only can filter out what you think is wrong.
You're a meme, calling others like everybody else, like the words retarded, drunk, high on drugs etc etc.
Do you know what retarded means? You love that word so much i don't think you know what it means without checking
And i've been checking those previous comments here about you versus the others. Wow who loves to get fucked? Is that your job?
gerubax 8 months ago
@KillSwitch66627 This arguement will go nowhere, you will continue your job arguing and i dont have a clue as to why you love it. Your most favourite game is not bioshock or CODBO or anything else, its arguement. And seeing you versus others. What is wrong with you?
Do alot of drugs? Is that common to get where you are from? Stupid lay off those drugs and find something better to do.
I'm done with you, Kill your switch im done feeding you with arguements. Stop this nonsense and relax.

Kid. You're comparing games from 2008 - 2011 to a game from the 90's. You, kid, have absolutely NO idea what you're talking about. And by the way.. It's "franchise" not "franshise".
Well.. Go play your "Black Cocks", kid, we could care less.
Wolfir11 8 months ago
@Wolfir11 You're the second person to judge a game due to its release (and like, the 20th person to use name calling), the over use of the word kid is hilarious coupled with the over use of commas; yet you attack me about mispelling a word... I NO I DONE FAILED MY INTERNET ENGLASH EGSAM!
KillSwitch66627 8 months ago
@Wolfir11 To be fair to KillSwitch, they spelt 'franchise' incorrectly, but you wrote:

Which is a grammatical error that means the exact opposite of what you wished to express, which was that you *couldn't* care less.

@that1dude0092 When I went to level 3, that was FAR, FAR worse than the gravity mutants
Reasons?
The entire level is swathed in darkness
There appears to be no music at all, just a strange rippling noise
And...those horrible, killer, INVISIBLE mutants.
mercifully, you don't have to spend that long on the level (only destroy the comp nodes, get the laser rapier and i think there is a magnum 2100 on that level too.

in my opinion, the Bioshock series is better than the System Shock series. the reasons being that Bioshock has better graphics, WAY simpler controls, wider enemy variety and is all around more exciting. saying that the Bioshock series copied off of the SS series is just a stupid argument because the were made by the same devs. it's just like they were refining their idea ten years later. though, i will admit, horrible graphics aside, SS series is scarier than the Bioshock series.
windwaker1994 1 year ago
@windwaker1994 Not really fair comparing a 15 year old game to a game released less than 3 years ago. System Shock has it's place in history, with a true 3d engine (not a 2d plane displayed in 3d like Doom was), great variety in weapons and opponents, and a great story.
Bioshock is good too, but I think if System Shock was re-released now, with modern graphics, and an updated control scheme, it would beat Bioshock hands-down.
kaintaka 1 year ago
@kaintaka no doubt. if System Shock was re-released, it'd be pretty amazing and could probably top Bioshock easily. especially if they kept the same level of horror and unexpected startles but got rid of the repetition.

ObamaBiden20082012 1 year ago
@ObamaBiden20082012
/nerd response
kaintaka 1 year ago
@kaintaka Okay. I'm not too good with names.... Edward, Bedford. I'd forgotten the specifics of the Citadel Fiasco as you call it. I thought this was referencing something new but yeah apparently this is just some trailer for a movie based on the Citadel incident or something. It would be nice if they changed some of the names because it's unfair to besmirch the name Diego he's a hero for stopping those criminals in Boston (who would have created another SHODAN had they not been stopped)

nooblet911 1 year ago
@nooblet911 sure they did. games like metal gear solid and the first halo. however, 90% of the stuff that comes out for these systems nowadays are just lame-ass sequels attempting to cash in on the success and originality of the first games.
Muzzleflash219 1 year ago
@Muzzleflash219 thats bullshit. ive been a console gamer my entire life, and they always amaze me with the originality, and quality of new games coming out. i dont care what gaming format its in, i appreciate a kickass game for what it is, a kickass game. i advise you do the same, and dont get involved in the petty squabbling of whos game player is best, just because you dont have one that somebody else does. its immature, and it blinds you from the immense talent in the medium as a whole.
theSneakySasquatch 1 year ago
@theSneakySasquatch
Muzzleflash219 1 year ago
@theSneakySasquatch
Muzzleflash219 1 year ago
@Muzzleflash219 i honestly dont care that much for MW2, except for its multiplayer. i do love a lot of other console games out there though. i honestly am having a hard time thinking, so i cant think of them all but whil there are some franchises that have kindof just cashed in, there are also a lot more out there that are still making the best games ive ever seen!
