Dear Friends Post #4. John Adams is a brilliant composer. I was looking for a way to put the images together with a piece of music that was as raw and terrifying as the act itself. And so I decided to use "Transmigration" and to tell you the truth...the selected photographs were toned down from the original selection. I am not a film maker or a videographer. And if you like John Adams be sure to listen to his "Dr. Atomic Symphony" and notice the use of the solo trumpet. Peace...CB!
Dear friends Post #3...Here's a string of words that all of you contributed to this community of 28 comments: strong reaction-troubled past-causes of violence-so evil-horrified-sad-powerful-traumatized-terrifying-crazy-irrelevant-unbearable-crying-eerie-racism-a peaceful future! Wow what a cross section of emotions and reactions.
Dear friends Post #2...After selecting the music and subject matter I became caught up in the technical aspect of a seamless effective joining of the photos & the music. This was a lengthy and creative learning process for me and I am very satisfied with the final version.
Dear Friends...I am Chris Bonebrake and the producer of this video. Its been 4 years and yes, believe it or not, I am just now reading the series of comments that this piece has stirred up in all of you. Thanks for your open and honest responses. I was amazed at the variety of approaches. I really didn't expect to hear from anybody. Some of you commented on the music, others on the terrorists attack and some on their personal gut feelings to the music.
I'm still (!) studying this piece and continue to find some of these comments very helpful. @DriversRunninScared, what provoked such a strong reaction in you? Was it something specific about the piece that was particularly difficult to take? I can quite understand/sympathise with your response. I just wonder what led you to feel how you did exactly. Thank you for posting comments about your experiences with this piece. I expect we'll be hearing quite a bit of this work next year.
Why didn't Adams open this piece with a song showing the "human" side of the 9/11 terrorists and their troubled past like in "The Death of Klinghoffer"?
I guess that when you're on the receiving end you're not willing to "confront the underlying causes of violence."
I am starting to learn this song in my chorus. I was horrified when I heard the parts I was going to sing with the full chorus. It was so eeire with all the disinance. It horrified me so bad. My sister thought someone was going to kill her when she heard the music
If anybody has comments about the relatinship between this music and the images, or the music itself, I'd be very interested to hear them. I'm doing research on this work as it relates to American national identity post-9/11 and I would be very interested to hear views about the work and whether you guys think it is effective/appropriate and why, etc. Wa anybody at the first performance in New York City? Please feel free to message me with appropriate comments.
Minimalismrocks asked if anyone was at the first performance in NYC, in Avery Fisher Hall. I was, and I remember being absolutely horrified and traumatized. Had I not been sitting in the middle of a row, I would have got up and left. I wanted to fly away.
I think this piece is really moving. It definitely hits somewhere deep, and makes me stop and think of where I was when I heard about it. I was a kid when this happened, (about to go into high school) but I can still recall how terrifying it was in a surrealistic manner. This work really captures that. I'm not crazy that it ends with the headline about Bush, as it seems an attack at a man trying to make things work, but that's simply my opinion and mostly irrelevant.
I dont know if you still need it or if it helps. But I was about eleven and I saw it with my own eyes. I was in school and there were children on the floor crying. It is hard to relive those moments. Seeing the images is unbereable. I wish people would stop posting them it hurts. As for the music the trumpets and repeting structure give it an eerie feel. I dont like it. My emotions dont match the music. There isnt much space. If u want more message me. I'll be glad to help.
That is cool that they are building the Freedom Tower. My daughter actually posted the early posts, but I am originally from Long Island (I grew up there, went to college in the W.C. area and then taught music back on "the island").
I sang this last night with the May Festival Chours and during our rehearseals, people had to leave because it was so sad. I'm with the cincinnati chirldrens choir
my choir is singing this song. it's SOOO scary, learning this! we're the youth choir part, and we're singing it with the Mendelssohn Club Choir, which is already a pretty intimidating choir, without such a scary song.
my college choir is actually singing this tonight!!! VERY tough piece but extremely powerful nonetheless... great video, just as powerful as the piece itself
i TOTALLY agree! this is a really hard piece! i'm in a professional youth choir, and our season just started and we've just started learning this for a concert in November. it's so darn intense! but yes, i love its power!

Can we talk about the music for a second?...
Is anyone else disgusted with 12 tone theory in general? Yes it seems appropriate in this song, but how much music has had to suffer because of it.

It is so sad that people do this to our country and about 7 years later no one remembers! OOO! Check out Heaven 911. So sad!
musicalmomof2 4 years ago
oh yes people remember, which is why they are building the Freedom Tower at the Twin Tower site, and believe me in New York, everyone remembers.
