you can tell hes very comfortable with what he's playing, which is probably the key. If you can get the feel for what you're playing, then it becomes more than just a simple beat. for example, I joined my high school jazz band with no previous jazz knowledge. Once I got the feel for the swing and all the rest of the stuff, you could play with more emotion as opposed to just playing whats written. its a very weird feeling :P
Aaron, thankyou so much for all the love and support you have shown me and thanks to everyone who has posted the version of my song on youtube. I really appreciate it!
He has some extremely bad habbits going on there. Notice his left hand in a twisted position and resting the snare? It will destroy your wrist... Great playing though, liked it.
@bertram7074 Who cares about his habits? The man has accomplished some great things and has worked with some astounding artists. People always feel the need to pick out the small things that don't matter. He's a great drummer, has an amazing pocket and is clearly talented. If anything, it's his habits that got him to where he is today.
@SupreMeFilm Did I offend you? You enter a defensive stance when I comment on a youtube video, that doesn't have anything, let me repeat, anything to do with you. So please - Back off. Jesus Christ..
@bertram7074 I don't take a personal offense to your statement, but I feel obligated to defend not only Aaron, but drummers who play with 'bad' habits. I myself have have told by other drummers that I play with bad habits. Quite frankly, I don't give a fuck about what they think and their 'proper' habits. I play drums because I love to play, I don't need criticism and I doubt Aaron or any professional drummer needs to hear about habits.
@bertram7074 And your opinion is the only one that can be voiced? Why is it that you are so important? let me repeat, why is it that you are so important? I didn't offend you did I? I wonder if you will enter a defensive stance because of my comment?
@K1ssTh1z If Aaron didn't want criticism, he shouldn't have published a video at all. There's good criticism, and bad criticism, take it or leave it, I don't care. Just remember who started out being personal here - it certainly wasn't me.
@bertram7074 annoying when someone acts all high and mighty to you isnt it? so quit being an asshole and be friendly. we are all legitimate people here lets act like it shall we?
@alphant1 Yea, he is the only one that can appreciate the groove going on here. The white kids just came to see the chops. Groove will get you the gig over chops 95% of the time.
Man, I got this DVD and it's great! They give you a PDF file with transcriptions of what he does, very cool shit. You also to get to see Aaron Spears as a different animal than what we see of him on Youtube, chops n' all. One problem though, the audience sucks it's like they're not even there...or even drummers. They ask some real dumb questions, such as "How do you get your bass drum foot so fast?" Practice mother fucker, I would of said that as soon as he asked.
@MrNanoGod at least once in your life you will hit your head, maybe your nose or a dangerous place like your eye ¡ouch!, your fingers with a stick on a crossing flashy moments or your finger with a rim, take off your glasses like famularo style, have pain on your shin, knee, back, shoulder, elbow, and/or wrist...take care drummers play with technique, but play from the heart!
Esse cara é o que eu chamo de batera comercial!!!! Faz o som que artista precisa, nem mais nem mesnos....e quando ele tem liberdade como por exemplo com o Usher, ele desce a mão e enche de notoa....muito bom!!!! Toca muito
Even though he possess the skill to shred through the whole song and make it sound awesome, he still plays pocket style. Now that's a true drummer and a true musician.
@eheister2006 There are two types of drummers. Drummers that call themselves drummers because they know how to play a standard 4:4 rock beat and drummers that understand why they play what they play. His DVD was about groove. Difficulty has nothing to do with that.

@MyDodah Have you even looked at his other stuff? If anything this video just showcases his grooving ability. To me this video also shows what a good pocket is with an even amount of fills every other bar, not just ear-splitting fills every bar.
your definty right but i do like fills more than beats but since like 3 years now i am also groovin and if you just use your ears and make descipline music you will understand that groovin is much more important than filling it up. i never had heard about aaron spears since i saw him @ usher omg tour1-03-2011 in rotterdam and the first thing i was wondering is who is that drummer HE IS MY FAVORITE DRUMMER SINCE THAN AND SINCE THAN I AM STUDYING HIS SKILS EN TECHNIQ THANK YOU AARON
@killa32130 Tony Royster Jr. doesn't just play with Jay-Z, he also has a jazz fusion band. But don't talk shit about rap either. As if you could make a rhyme worth mentioning.
@PoeticJustice05 No thanks, I'd rather not stoop myself to the all time low of rap. Shit talentless brainless trash music. Absolute poetic tragedy. It's like watching poetry commit suicide with a fucking gun. Wait.. No it's not poetry. It's like shit committing suicide with a gun. That is all.
@killa32130 First of all Hip-Hop isn't all bad (Musicians love Lupe Fiasco and J Dilla just to name a few) Turn off the radio and learn to dig deeper into music.
These guys do their best to play everything because they appeciate all styles not just one genre of music.
@Denominator9411 I know exactly why he's not filling. It's much more important to beat than fill. I don't like fills as much as I like beats. I don't think he should be filling. Most videos you'd watch on fills is not as important as most videos you'd watch on playing a consistent groove. I was not saying I dislike this video at all. What hell? Geeze!
Everyone keeps saying this audience is dead, except for the black guy in the right corner... Look at the nerdy dude on Aaron's left, he's also groovin' !! =D
Hey Guys I have done a cover to Aaron's famous Caught up. I don't want to sound big headed but it is pretty good. If you guys have time check me out, I'm a young aspiring drummer looking for recognition and I'd really appreciate it if u could give me advice which I am always open to. Thanks in advance Joel.
@screamjyser They're dead because he's not exactly doing anything mind blowing. He's just hitting the pocket perfect like a plump pussy. Which is of course awesome, it just wasn't getting me out of my seat like the video I watched of him tearin' up the usher song.
@drummerlinn You have to keep in mind that, in MOST situations, the people watching you perform with a group are NOT drummers. And in my honest opinion, as a drummer, it takes real balls to play in the pocket for most of the time, because you CAN'T screw it up. ESPECIALLY when recording. And that's exactly why I practice grooving and not filling. People pay you to groove, not show off.
@IPstixrawesume filling is not nearly as important as the pocket. I meant it's a simple groove, not make you twitch groove. I don't mean the drummer should fill all the time. It makes sense that's what you took from my comment though. explanations aren't really my forte.
watched until 1:22. all i needed. so refreshing to see a dude ( who, make no mistake, IS capable...) simply play a nice, straight-ahead, groovin' track to a great song, by the way.........not sure who the artist is, and at the beginning, thought Stevie Wonder or something...?? Lol!..anyway, you get the point. this guy's playing is very, very nice. sensible, NOT over the top with a bunch of "look at me" shit goin' on, just.....doing basically, what a drummer is supposed to DO!!

"My murderous rap verbal attack is actual fact,
Tactical tracks match perfectly with graphical stats,
Half of you lack the magical dap of tragical rap,
That tackles you back and shackles and laughs at you-that's,
The mathematical madness I'm on, the savage, the strong,
The marraige, a bond of havoc and song,
This massacre's on as if Picasso laced you,
There's lotsa hateful skeletons locked in the closet of my castle at Grayskull...
PoeticJustice05 9 months ago
@killa32130 I'm possum at grade school,
That's why I have to debate you,
My raps are like Capel, slashing your face, you,
That's how a master degrades you,
I'm battling Jesus (Pronounced like the Spanish version 'hay-soos') if he passes through my label,
I'm snatching his halo,
God I pray that you send my father back as an angel...

@killa32130 Language is fatal and it's hypnotizing,
I'm only emphasizing,
I'm still all about business and enterprising,
I'm super lyrical, the brain boosts the chemicals,
That's used contenicals inside of my mental projectable."
Even William Wordsworth would applaud that shit. Just because you've never heard good rap, doesn't mean it's not out there.

What hell? Geeze!

Which is of course awesome, it just wasn't getting me out of my seat like the video I watched of him tearin' up the usher song.
drummerlinn 11 months ago
@drummerlinn You have to keep in mind that, in MOST situations, the people watching you perform with a group are NOT drummers. And in my honest opinion, as a drummer, it takes real balls to play in the pocket for most of the time, because you CAN'T screw it up. ESPECIALLY when recording. And that's exactly why I practice grooving and not filling. People pay you to groove, not show off.
IPstixrawesume 10 months ago

5/5
