I've been a big Janis fan for a long time, and yeah I can be a purist. this version does not hold a candle to Joplin's, but it is a lovely version in its own right. If she'd tried to approximate Janis's style I would have been bothered, but doing a mellow jazzy cover is a really nice homage.
@smilelikeUmeanit90 tastes differ. From my point of view this version is better than Janis Joplin's performance. Why decided? It is simple. Just wanted to do that. And good for her :)
I love this version of the song...Its brilliant in that she does it completely her own style while still leaving a litle Janis in there. Her voice is strong and the performance is flawless. Brilliant.
@marcmorgado As they say: beauty lies in the eye of the beholder (or listener in that case). It is her version and I like that she didn't try to duplicate Joplin. I myself like it a lot.
je t'adore katie, mais stp, n'essaie plus de reprendre Janis (l), la chanson en perd tout son sens et ses tripes!! personne ne devrait essayer d'ailleurs, c'est tout simplement impossible et c'est tant mieux!! ^^
@chipperthebrave10 I don't think that is the case...this song is a tour de force sung by Janis... Katie's version is simply boring and pedestrian, while Janis' is ferocius, desperate and wild... Katie turned Kozmic Blues into a tamed sub-standard syrupy jazz number... I do not hate Katie Melua, but she is waaaay off here...
compared to Janis Joplin, Katie Melua sounds like she's whispering.
very very weak.
Please do not attempt to do a Joplin if you can't pull it off.
to those pop listeners, chart songs addicts out there, please go and listen to more music. study up. if you prefer this to Janis Joplin, you're not getting it.
This is disgraceful. Seems like she's never heard Janis Joplin groaning this song, dying in the stage with a deep feeling. Seems like this cute child has got no blood in her veins
I'm still dissapointed about when I see her concerts, the average age is about 40 years.. I don't blame her at all!! I blame the commercial music influence!! Watch them stick around at Justin Bieber... They can't help it, commercial music catches their eyes the first, and so they don't look any further.... I'd really hope, wish, that someday, Katie will also really catch the attention of younger people... They are the future of music, together with Katie, if they notice her.
@874505010 No thanks... I just need to tell how I think and feel about her, her music and everything around that... Yes, I know she's from Georgia, guess that's a thing which makes her so unique... I'm a bit jealous you're from Georgia, and I'm just from this bloody f*cked up country called the Netherlands.... I don't like this country, I'd rather move to the UK.... At least there I can visit more interesting concerts from Katie but also other artists I really aprecciate... Unfortunately I can't
But let me say one thing; if Katie sings a cover, she knows what she's doing; Kozmic Blues, On the road again, I think it's going rain today...... She makes them all sound like there's simply no better way to bring it.... Her musical talent is something really special I guess...
Oww yes of course this is really Janis Joplin's song... But the way Katie sings this, but not only this one, is just an interpretation which is at these days probably better than the original at these days... I say, at these days, because I know at the time these kind of songs were made, were appreciated A LOT MORE, because of the strong appearance of those artists.
Oh, and most of all, I'd like to say; I watched many Janis Joplin versions after I heard this from Katie.... But I'm afraid I just have to say sorry to Janis Joplin; in my opinion Katie makes it an absolutely GREAT song... And yes, she really SINGS it with passion... Joplin more screamed it with passion... I feel really sorry for Janis Joplin, but really, this REALLY rocks, blueses, swings, it does anything..
I'm going to try to post something now, which actually breaks copyright laws... But I made this, and I think it's great enough for Dramatico to take it over, or remake the idea of my edited version of this song... It's the version of this song, from Katie's concert at the O2, on vinyl. It sounded so amazing to me to hear it from vinyl, I couldn't leave to do something with it. So I digitalised it, and I edited this video (reduced to low quality) onto it. I'd like to say; take it, or leave it...
@FBAV the link; (paste behind wwwdotyoutubedotcom)= watch?v=QSJ1zRCWw14
I don't intend to break copyright laws... I intend to use my own passion and creativity
in any possible way 'cause that's how I am... Breaking copyright laws means in my
eyes; misabuse stuff... I don't think I did, I just edited it in a way I felt it would be great.... If it is; I guess the effect is more promotional than damaging anything at all...
WOW!!! I am deeply impressed again - the way HOW she brings it - coool! She often reminds me of young HELEN SCHNEIDER i loved to listen in the 80s when i was quiet a bit younger too ;-)
A very good proof of taste from Katie Melua, but unfortunately marred by the facility chosen to round almost every highlights (and certainly not so easy to sing) that make Kozmic Blues such a great song. However, although "purists" will just see a massacre of the original, given the difficulty and rarity of the song, this is pretty much a decent interpretation, I'd say :)
Nevertheless, her voice is so clear and it's such a pleasure to listen to her. Especially the part: "I'd better hold it now...I'd better use it till the day that I die..." And she sings it so melodically. I see no apparent reason for criticising her performance. Moreover, she has every right to sing this song. By the way, this "woman, whoever she is" is Katie
Melua. You can see her name right above the video.
Nevertheless, her voice is so clear and it's such a pleasure to listen to her. Especially the part: "I'd better hold it now...I'd better use it till the day that I die..."
I can't believe this woman, whoever she is, would think that this performance could even begin to hold a candle to the original. And to think people on this blog claim to have good taste in music. Shame.
sounds like kind of parody on janis! i agree with bbommel...what a luck, janis cannot hear that! katie has no strength and no passion in her weak voice for that powerful song.
Katie Melua is great. I have quite a few of her albums. Unfortunately there are some very amateurish transitions in this song that do not fit. I think she is using a classic scale instead of a blues scale. Euroblues or fauxblues perhaps, but it ain't quite the blues.?
The original is better then this version, because Janis puts so much pain into her voice, that you really can feel her suffering. Yet, Melua is the better singer of both..

My guess is Rotterdam.
It's definitely from Katie's recent 'Arena' tour, i saw her in Manchester and stage is set up the same.
The reason i say it's Rotterdam is i have her recent best of, The Collection and it comes with the Rotterdam concert on DVD.
While i'm not going to go get the DVD right now, that being a Dramatico release and this being their channel, i'm fairly confident i'm right.
