Why did he change part of his name and not the other. More importantly why did he change his name at all? The Quran nor the hadith instruct people to do so. People need to learn the difference between religion and culture.

Islam allow a person to change his name but it's forbidden to change your familly name and that's why he changed his first name only and you are right he doesnt have to change his name but if he wants so its his right.
