  • Dumb-asses. When you raise minimum wage, the companies have to charge more.... You get more money, and you have to spend more money.

  • italia4356: You're the clueless one. That's why big corporations rule China, yet the population there is so poor. The corporations make billions from cheap labour, but the citizens make close to nothing for the same reason. You need an appropriate minimum wage. That's the reason why they didn't make it 1 million dollars an hour, because they KNOW it needs to be appropriate.

  • italia4356: Well when you do basic maths with the minimum wage, people should be able to survive on it. That wasn't the case. It hadn't been increased for 10 years. Imagine how much inflation has increased the cost of living, but wages not going up. The minimum wage needs to be adjusted with inflation. Also, compared to other wealthy western countries the US has a fairly low minimum wage in comparison.Frances minimum wage is $12.60 an hour and they're doing just fine and out of recession

  • italia4356: Inflation is a natural occurrence that happens in every single economy in the world. There probably wasn't much of a need for a minimum wage up until 71 years ago because there were a lot more small businesses and a lot less national and international corporations. As business sizes grow they cut and cut and cut costs everywhere to remain competitive on a national scale. An example of this is walmart. Wages would continue to be cut if there was no line which no one could not cross

  • @mark200

wait.... youre telling me that 71 years ago the world was more based on international business and less based on small business?

my friend, you are SO ignorant. please seek more knowledge before the next election cycle.

  • @wohs145... I really don't understand how you reached that conclusion from what I said.

  • @mark200

then i recommend you enroll in a writing and reading comprehension class at your local community college.

  • Oh God...

  • That is not true, study history. There was virtually no US inflation at all from 1665 to 1913 with only a couple minor and temporary exception periods when there was war and/or fiat currencies were issued and subsequently withdrawn (revolutionary war, war of 1812 and the civil war).

Over printing of fiat currencies is what causes inflation or sometimes war can temporarily cause inflation, but fiat currencies always cause inflation.

  • You people are foolish, the higher minimum wage is, the more people will be unemployed. Learn basic economics before you push your free lunches. If you are not skilled, you deserve the lower wage, because you do not produce the capital. If you want more employment opportunity, let the economy have its natural path, and not the artificial created by the government, but most people are moranic sheeple, that deserve the unemployment and welfare.

  • It should be zero. If someone produces £3 of goods an hour why would I pay them £5 an hour. It makes no sense. The minimum wage reduces competition for trade unions. They're the special interest groups. If it worked they would raise it to a very high price level. In apartheid South Africa white trade unions campaigned for higher minimum wages for blacks.

  • I remember when I was a kid (early teens) I thought to get minimum wage at a job was great, it was 3.35 at the time. lol

  • but that was when gas was around 75¢ a gallon so you could get over 4 gallons with what you made an hour back in the middle of 2008 when gas was almost $5 a gallon someone who's only making $7 could'nt even get 2 gallons with that !

  • The minimum wage should be zero. Wage and price controls never work. The government should not set the price of a loaf of bread or an hour of labor. I want people to make as much a possible but the minimum wage movement is a shell game - companies just raise prices to compensate or do not hire the least skilled workers to begin with. If we could legislate higher wages why not make the minimum $25 an hour? Of course that is a bad idea for the same reasons that any minimum wage is a bad idea.

  • NEED does not justify THEFT.

One person's right to life/liberty/property does not include a claim to anyone else' life/liberty/property, even if they cannot support themselves. Such a claim violates the other person's right.

  • He's s modern day "fire brand"

  • You are a genius. Will you please run for president because you have my vote.

When you raise the minimum wage all you do is increase the price of everything else and minimum wage will still make people poor. Get an education and earn the right to make more money. I shouldn't have to pay someone who has no education $10.00 an hour. I paid the price and worked my ass off in college so I can now make $40,000 a year.starting.

  • cwood4ever you get it. Education is key, not a "fair system" based upon welfare.

  • It should be 10 bucks an hour!

  • But hey, this is progress.

  • $8 an HOUR WOULD BE MORE REALISTIC !

  • When it is, you will complain for $20/hour. If you want a higher salary, get the ability to produce more capital. When, you work for a company, its not designed to make you rich, only to pay you enough to keep you, until they can replace you at a cheaper cost. Minimum wage increased will make it harder to get pass the poor class, due to less opportunity, because workers are over payed in necessary areas.

  • un real! first the reasoning is...well noone but kids make minimum wage, everyone pays more then minimum wage so dont raise it...then they turn around and say, well if you raise the minimum wage, it will mean ppl will lose jobs because employers cant afford it. if you cant see all this is bullshit lies, noone can help you! good lord, bout damn time it was raised!

  • Should be 10$

  • ...as I was saying, most of the comments on this forum so far are ignorant, and obviously by rabid Ayn Randists. Minimum wage and its level makes a difference to the wage of everyone in the bottom third, at least. Britain didn't have a minimum wage until 2000, and its wages were total rubbish - for most people - during the 90s. (I worked in an office, I know.) We were all grossly underpaid.

  • You Yanks - all 8 of you up there already - must be TOTALLY DAFT - BONKERS - IF YOU THINK minimum wage makes no difference to the lot in life/survival chances of the lowest-paid - which is a LOT of people, including students - why don't they deserve to have a decent wage while having to fund their overpriced study courses! Well... decent by comparison wiht the Third World at least! You're bonkers also if you think, by some "economic theory" that it makes no difference to ALL wage levels...

  • SAD

  • Who works for minimum wage? Mostly teenagers nad non-english speaking workers. Most companies pay more than minimum wage to older workers anyway. All this does is eliminate the top paid people (adults) to pay teenagers the lower wage. Thanks Congress for yet another way to screw the middle class.

  • Minimum Wage doesn't help anybody and it doesn't matter how high it goes. Any economist knows that and can explain why. Raising Minimum wage simply contributes to raising prices and the elimination of jobs.

  • Mininum wage hurts the poor by pricing out low skilled workers

  • What does it buy the people who get fired because a business can no longer afford them?

  • Here in the UK,the minimum wage is £5.50 per hr,$11 is your money.

  • Finally! I'm glad Miller and the Democrats made this happen. Long overdue, for sure. Just too bad it isn't higher...
