Its funny how sagan was an athiest.athiests in general recoil at the ideah that creationists worship and idolise a God.yet reading some of the comments about sagan here it would seem sagan himself is worshiped.
Sagan wasn't an atheist per-se. He simply believed in the things that had good evidence but unfortunately a lot of people confuse this with atheism. Matter of fact, Sagan said that he wished there was a God and that there was a life after death so he could continue marveling, researching, and understanding the universe and that there was a god so he could stop worrying about the consequences of human actions.
There's a huge difference between admiring someone's teachings and believing that they are divine everlasting and omnipresent beings who affect and create every moment of our lives. No one in this thread believes that Sagan had supernatural powers or gnosis. He was just a smart dude who articulated scientific concepts and theories in a way that made them accessible to people who did not have a background in advanced math. He inspired people to learn about the world around them without authority.
i now of carl sagan of 07 and wene i fond out he was dead i felt a felling i never felt befor it was a fuckin shock. i am going to make my myspace of him.
Carl Sagan died 11 years ago today. I didn't learn of him until a few years ago when I started watching the Cosmos series. I decided to look him up on the internet and learned that he was no longer alive... I wept like I'd lost a close friend. Carl Sagan made a huge impact in my life and he completely changed my way of thinking. Thank you Carl!
I sympathize with you greatly. You are not a dork for liking Carl Sagan, not at all. I am a 17 year, and for my entire life I had been looking for someone like Sagan. Upon finding him, downloaded (sadly illegally) all of Cosmos, and purchased four of his books. He has been extremely influential in my life, and he is one of my heros.
"I would love to believe that when I die I will live again, that some thinking, feeling, remembering part of me will continue. But much as I want to believe that, and despite the ancient and worldwide cultural traditions that assert an afterlife, I know of nothing to suggest that it is more than wishful thinking. The world is so exquisite with so much love and moral depth, that there is no reason to ...
... deceive ourselves with pretty stories for which there's little good evidence. Far better it seems to me, in our vulnerability, is to look death in the eye and to be grateful every day for the brief but magnificent opportunity that life provides."--Carl Sagan
Carl Sagan and other like him pray for people like us people who understand that we need to be good to every living organism. Thats his dream and all or dreams so why not try and make this one a reality.

OK I WENT A LITTLE OFF THE DEEP END... Im upset there arent enough people on the Globe to understand the full scope and magnitude of life in the cosmos... not unlike Gene Rodenberry also a "Visionary" of our times. Crawl back to your cave and I'll crawl back to my dismal swamp of de-evolution.
I watched Cosmos when I was in grade school. It changed my life. Carl Sagan is one of the greatest human beings to live during my lifetime, certainly. He is the hero of tens of thousands around the world, whose lives were changed by his ability to articulate the deep feelings of longing and wonder when we ponder the deep truths of the cosmos. He is my hero, as well.
It puts everything into the correct perspective. Unfortunately we will still see ourselves as self-important and maintain our delusion. How truely small we are compared to the universe!
My hero is Hypatia, the last custodian of the Library of Alexandria. She was widely known as a genius before St Cyril and his followers flayed her alive and burned all her books. Search for 'Hypatia' on youtube where Carl Sagan talks of this remarkable woman. More people need to know her story.
Well done young jedi. I had the honor of meeting Carl Sagan in the early 90's for a brief moment. At the time I had no idea of of how he would influence me many years later. He truly understood our place in the universe. One of my favorite books is 'The demon haunted world'.
Mine too. I had a segment in this video talking about Demon Haunted World and about his views of psuedoscience. How it detracts from the actual wonder and complexity that is available in our universe. But I cut it for time. Maybe in a later video. Thanks for the comment.
You're right about the difference bewteen Sagan and some other scientists. A contagious sense of awe. And of course the humane ethic, as evidenced by the Whales Sagan upload here on YouTube where Carl calls whale hunting "murder".
Great video and great synopsis of Dr. Sagan's impact. After watching an episode of Cosmos a while back I couldn't get enough of his work. For me, as with many people, he has helped turn a fascination of science into a (spiritual, intellectual, observational...) journey.
I was the same way. When I re-learned about him as an adult, I ate up as much of his words, speeches, and videos that I could. Thankfully, his wife Ann Druyan and Neil Degrasse Tyson have taken his mantle and have ran with it.
It was originally a lecture that he gave. He turned it into a book, also called Pale Blue Dot. I originally has subtitles during that section, but because I had problems with exporting, I had to rework that section and the third one.

Well, all my life my hero was any common soldier.
But lately I've been questioning if half the soldiers on this planet really WANT to do that?
What if they just do it cuz they saw it in a game or want the gun or were FORCED to be in the army?
I always admired Carl Sagan's view of us in actuality... So I suppose my hero all along was him.
Nice video, and it's really nice how you value other's opinions :)
