I'm getting a jeep 5.9 for $1500, it's got over a quarter-million miles and it needs a bit of bodywork done. When I learned that it was one of the rarest SUVs ever built, I realized I got a good deal on it. Damn! I can't wait until I have it! And I live in Colorado where four-wheel drive is crucial!
i have a 99 5.2L magnum v8 durango with some little bit done but i havent to it to the test like you guys im not sure but i think my durango may be a little more heavier? then yours are have you guys must have pissed alot of guys off that night with there rice cakes lol you gave the muststangs a run for there money good for you! : ] the 5.2L is what 230hp & the 5.9L 250hp tops and there alot heavier then those other cars you guys were raceing with 5 stars
What are the mods done to the 5.9 and the 5.2? the obvious air intake and exhaust i can tell. but they both seem pretty quick none the less. real nice vid man. gotta love the v8 magnums for their torque.
i picked a 1998 jeep grand cherokee se 5.9L for $5,000 all it need was new front bearings(what jeep doesn't), its a great jeep putting out 245hp, 0-60 in 7s, its definitely got some balls, the only bad thing is 15 mpg city puts a dent in the wallet
@mattmonster16 245 hp is WAY off. the 5.2 is 225. there's NO way that 42 ci+ with an elec fan(+20hp), new cam (+15hp) ignition advance with premium fuel, 2.75" exhaust (25% less back pressure) and a computer upgrade ONLY add 20 horsepower. my guess is that 245 is posted for insurance reasons. I've ridden in a 5.9 and i drive a 5.2. you've got a hotrod on your hands!
@yz250ftony Factory rating on the '98 360 was 245hp/345tq. The reason it's a hotrod is torque. My father drives an RMV (Retired military vehicle) that was a mobile machine shop. It has a 14-liter diesel that only produces about 270hp... And ~1400tq. Sorry, but an electric fan will not add 20hp to anything.
can i get a 5.2 grand cherokee with an option of 2wd? i know that all jeeps a full time 4x4 and i want to know if i can get one that i can switch between 2wd and 4wd
@Erhorn300 if you swap cases. i swapped my 249(awd) for a 242 (selec-trac). 2wd, 4 full time, 4 part time and 4 low. the 231 also gives you 2wd with 4 part time and 4 low. if you swap for a 242 or 231 you better have a light right foot on the rain ;-)
I just bought a 5.9 for $5350,, it is awfully fast lol.. However i wouldnt be drag racing it like this because the sudden Jolt from putting it into gear at higher rpm's can dmg the drive train on these Jeeps
Hey i have a question.. My 5.9 I noticed when i get to 50mph and hold that speed around 50-55mph. The Jeep makes a ever so slight oooooo in a high pitch noise.. Its not a whirring, moaning noise. Its more high pitched noise, and when i let off the gas it will show up, and if i give it gas it goes away. If i barely press on the gas to maintain the speed it will show up again..
Ive driven v8's with bad rear ends and they sounded like big mud tires. Mine isnt, any idea's ?
Yeah, it's the pinion bearings in the front end. I've replaced several of them on the dana 30's now. They're notorious for going out around 100,000 miles or earlier. It probably won't cause you problems for a long time but it is annoying lol
You sure its the front ? I figured the noise was coming from the front, but when your driving its hard to tell. I changed the front diff oil a week ago and im not sure if i ever heared this sound before that. I just bought it so i dont know . I never changed the rear yet.
The front i changed the oil with a 80w-90 Coastal Gear oil. The Dana 30 isnt limited slip like the rear right ? I used the correct oil ? I never took the cover off, just sucked it out with a pump.
You can pull the front driveshaft on the 96-98 249's to see if thats it. I had the same noise in two different 98 grand cherokees and it was the pinion bearings on both of them.Go to jeepsunlimited forums for good info.

Well first of all,these races were done in the heat of a nashville summer and we don't race with the ac on. Plus we love the sounds of our jeeps ;-) As for the neon, it trailed up until 60 and the white 5.9 would have taken it anyway! lol

That's funny...you're not going to find any 4.0 at a race track unless it's a stroker! I have 2 V8 grand cherokees, the 5.9 in this video with over 150000 the other a crawler with over 280000 still running strong turning 35's!!!
decent power stock, reliable if taken care of (easy), but a b!tch to work on...little to no room underhood. i'm happy with mine. cut airbox, magnaflow muffler/side exhaust, 249>242 tc swap, upcountry package. the 249 tc is strong, but CRAP. VC goes out on alomst all of them. even with full skids, it still pulls all the ricers and 3 series bimmers. put it in 4 wheel for the rain..launches hard :D
try to look for a 5.9 instead of a 5.2, or if you don't find any 5.9 for sale you may think of getting a 4.7 WJ, but the difference between a 5.2 and a 5.9 it's big, i can guarantee to you.

took my 5.2 with bald michelin ltx m/s tires thru some real mud and it preformed great. 5.9 is just as good. drop by jeepforum and check out some of our built GC's. We wheel em hard
i got a grey 99 I6. It isnt that fast but ya it does have lots of torque. it has about 135,000 and it still works fine. at least the engine does... the tranny is bout to crash soon lol

The problem with the 5.9 is it drinks premium gas :( The 5.9 gets better numbers in a race but the 5.2 gets lower numbers at the pump. Gas here in NY should hit a couple thousand gallon by december.
my friend has a 5.9 and i have a 5.2 and he actually gets better gas mileage than me.. its only because i drive like a crazy man but even if i was driving to save fuel the 5.2 only gets 1mpg better than the 5.9
yes, you can drop a 5.9 into a durango. some of them came with 5.9's from the factory, so it might be as easy as finding a wrecked durango with a 5.9 already in it and swapping the engines. you'll need to salvage the 5.9's engine computer as well, but other than that it should be a pretty simple bolt-in operation.

That's funny...that's my white 5.9 and it killed my buddies 04' Overland even back when it was stock.Maybe you should have done a good tune up.There's no replacement for displacement!The straight line performance of the 1998 5.9L V8 has been surpassed by Jeep only with the 2006 introduction of the 6.1L SRT8 HEMI grand cherokee.

i got a grey 99 I6. It isnt that fast but ya it does have lots of torque. it has about 135,000 and it still works fine. at least the engine does... the tranny is bout to crash soon lol

an I6 isn't something speed wise to brag about, i had to run mine off a header for a bit and it sounded freakin good since its a mopar. not sure how we went from talking about speed to how they sound.

i have a durango with the 4.7 and it seems pretty decent to me, so id imagine that a jeep that weighs 600 lbs. less than mine with basically the same motor must be pretty awesome

The problem with the 5.9 is it drinks premium gas :( The 5.9 gets better numbers in a race but the 5.2 gets lower numbers at the pump. Gas here in NY should hit a couple thousand gallon by december.

my friend has a 5.9 and i have a 5.2 and he actually gets better gas mileage than me.. its only because i drive like a crazy man but even if i was driving to save fuel the 5.2 only gets 1mpg better than the 5.9

yes, you can drop a 5.9 into a durango. some of them came with 5.9's from the factory, so it might be as easy as finding a wrecked durango with a 5.9 already in it and swapping the engines. you'll need to salvage the 5.9's engine computer as well, but other than that it should be a pretty simple bolt-in operation.

That's funny...that's my white 5.9 and it killed my buddies 04' Overland even back when it was stock.Maybe you should have done a good tune up.There's no replacement for displacement!The straight line performance of the 1998 5.9L V8 has been surpassed by Jeep only with the 2006 introduction of the 6.1L SRT8 HEMI grand cherokee.
