Great News!! "On May 5, 2011, the Detroit International Bridge Company announced it engaged the Ann Arbor firm of Quinn Evans to oversee restoration of the roof and windows of the structure. Bridge Company vice chairman Matthew Moroun stated, 'We hope this is just the beginning of a renaissance for the depot'" - Wikipedia
@hop208 and as soon as they fix it up, it will get vandalized. by losers. Can't have nothing nice in Detroit. It would be great if they revived the city.
@yackary1234 They just might as well as street cars they have such better tech. now theat everything could run way more efficiently. Not to mention if they did start turning up again, that tech. would improve way faster then what they have been doing with cars ( since trains have been on the back burner for many years)
the whole city of Detroid is dead......np take a look at Hiroshima guess its an eye for an eye,but its better to be reborn from your ashes then, starvation, unemployment, and totally deserting the place...

Here's an idea: Turn it into a movie studio. A lot of movies have been shot around there and it was supposed to be the new HQ for the Detroit Police Department so it shouldn't be too much of a stretch to use it to make movies and tv shows. Provided we don't let Snyder and legislature kill the movie tax credit.
@1xsooliner Yes she is still standing, And I agree it is sad to see it go to waste, one the tallest train station in the world, and now it stands bare, rumors of a possible casino have arose though
well the way we americans use up space it should be criminal not to use this amazing and beautifull building for somthing. no building should be allowed to be built until this building is used all the way.
It's sad to see such grand buildings abandoned and destroyed like this one. To be honest, it was probably overbuilt even for it's time. Unfortunately, restoring it is only a dream. It's designed use will never return. Taking it down is not even an option, who could afford to demolish it, not Detroit that's for sure. Sadly, it will be left as a monument for all that went wrong. Great video, love your pictures, wish there were more before and after.
the building itself is structurally sound if the city had the money the could restore it without to much difficulty. however most of that sidecar town is gone such as tiger stadium. the owner who also owns the ambassador bridge seems interested in restoring it. i would be shocked if some restoration attempts aren't made in the next decade.
I found your presentation on the Michigan Central Station well done, interesting and sad.. I believe, however, that there were other reasons for failure. First, there were the racial tensions which arose from the ashes of the 1967 riots., Second, during the 1970s, there were the overtly racist policies of Coleman Young, Thirdly, there was rampant crime which began in the 1970s.. And finally, there were, and are. low expectations, identification in victimhood and incompetence in city leaders.
Whats really sad is not just the abandon buildings. But the town that was the hub of early twentieth century ingenuity, was a leader in manufactoring, Fords assembly line changed the world forever. Yet despite all of this it somehow lost it's way. Amazing how people can fuck a good thing up. And there's a lots a blaim to go around.
This building isn't in this condition JUST because it was "left to rot", but because people have intentionally destroyed it, either for salvage/scrap or just their own destructive tendancies that have helped destroy Detroit, maybe forever. I understand what it's like to be poor, bu that DOESN'T justify destroying YOUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD. Dumbasses!!!
I am one of likely only a hundred or so people that are still alive who worked there during the MCS' last decade of operation. I worked in many offices on almost every floor except at ground level and the 12th and top (13th floor) in the 70s-mid-80s. Wish I had brought a camera to work with me back then, but didn't know how quickly the employees (including me) were to be laid off and building was to be abandoned by the late 80s..oh, well!!
Such beautiful old buildings should never be allowed to rot like this. I hope someone comes forward and restores it to it's former splendour. A wonderful video.
Oh "hop208"! Thanks for the awesome news about restoring the depot! I will remain hopeful. Thanks!

It's a shame that a grand old building like that got closed down and is left to rot .

Nice history, well presented. I've added the video to my channel for the benefit of my Urban Economics students at Wayne State University.
