@niselat that is good to know since I have to fly in a week, and feel like you might as well be asking me to fly to the moon, yes-- I am a big chicken. Bagock!
The comments below that state "shit" pilots is not a fair call. Think of this: It is 1971; no Pilots back then were ever trained in CRM; CREW MANAGEMENT; the duties were not delegated properly. While the Captain was agitated, his lack of training showed. These days we are aware in any industry of how to deal with adversity; like a grumpy Captain that neglected to answer the Co-Pilot when he asked" should I take over on flying plane...it was like the old Pollack joke:how many does it take to fix
@Lisatrublu also there was statements from other pilots that the cockpit was full of alarms going off all the time that would end up making you start to ignore the sounds at certain times! I live about 10 miles from the crash site and have read just about everything about this crash!
this video is so much better than that other one on here that's got a lot of unrealistic things.. you can tell these guys are real pilots reenacting and not actors.
... and the most important point is that when you have a 3 man crue + a technical officer returning home, all of them should not be focused on the same problem and someone should fly the plane.
Ive watched NatGeos (?) Air Crash Investigation a lot and this was one of the crashes shown on the series. It never seizes to amaze me how everyone is focused on a this problem and noone is flying the plane. There were a few other incidents like this on the series. Then again mistakes obviously happen and sometimes grave ones. Still, every pilot should know to first fly the plane and then troubleshoot.
Was it true about the Ghost of Flight 401 was heard on the cockpit voice recorder saying to the crew "There will never be an L-1011 crash again!" ?? I saw it in a movie which was based on the real story
@TurbulentG In fact, they performed a christmas tree test or whatever its called, that lights every warning bulb in the cockpit, at that point, the captain could have assumed a faulty bulb, fact is, he was grumpy and irratable, and when asked by his copilot should he take over, he ignored him and kept focusing on the light, while accidently touching off the flight controlls, so its not a case of shit pilots, its more a case of 1 captain who gets annoyed and angry, and a crew that follows orders
@Piosmos: its more a case of 1 captain who gets annoyed and angry, and a crew that follows orders
JM: The Capt said repeatedly, for them to forget about the light and just check the visual indicator on the gear itself. He said this repeatedly. The crew did NOT follow orders....but the Capt was not assertive enough. The main human factor in this accident was that the pilot flying, the Capt, did not maintain situational awareness. EVERYBODY in the cockpit should have heard the auto-pilot disc.
auto pilot shut off by accident (to much going on in the cockpit), loss of altitude, noboby notices (too much going on in the cockpit). cartwheel into the glades in the middle of the night. lots of heros respond. i remember the a.m. radio news flash well (wqam). RIP. don repo lives on in an oven on 318. keep on keepin' on.
On the TriStar dash [this demo cockpit is a DC10] you can also interchange a main gear light with the nose gear light and vice versa, to check if it's a faulty bulb or light assembly. I've had this situation once, that's why I know about it.
These guys are incomplete. First Captain Bob Loft was not wearing his glasses. Where is the jumpseater and why did'nt F/E Don Repo and the jumpseater go down to the hell hole before they crashed?
The nly acurite thing about it is the CVR or the dialog I had heard a part of the real Cockpit Vioce Recording and its lyk 98% acurite the other problems are 1 Captin loft was wearing glasses 2 thats a dc-10 cockpit starnderd lockhead l1011's would have green landing gear lights 3 Don Repo was suposed to go down in to the Hellhole to check the gear ok
oops, SORRY about that. I guess language was needed to express your point. I made that comment not seeing the Engineer's panel but from the throttles.... my bad...

ATC could have told they needed to climb 2,000. ATC dropped the ball as well, a comedy of errors rather, a tragedy of errors.
tinainfla 3 months ago
@tinainfla every crash requires at least three distinct failures to occur before it can happen.

@tonybklyn Actually, It is believed the Ghosts of Flight 401 save more lives on future L-1011 flights than what died on 401
Flyglobespan93 1 year ago
@Flyglobespan93 Actually the story was debunked. Part from the trashed palne were not exchanged.
