@aspengrey Hi ther. The sticks are made from rattan jo-staffs cut down to the right length (40 inches in this case). The guards are the leather ones made by Purple Heart Armoury.
He's obviously far more practised than she. Perhaps he was just teasing her or something. She has no footwork or form, so naturally her entire structure is unsound.
A quick word in Jack's defense here, yes at the time (this video is quite old) she wasn't hugely experienced, and I had had more practice than her (although I certainly wasn't teasing her. Those hits were solid when they landed!), but things have changed since then. I've not done much fencing, and she has. A repeat performance of this might well see me receiving a sound thrashing.
I merely meant that she was out-matched here and there is not much instruction going on, so I failed to see the point in the exercise. It would be cool to see the improvement whenever you've another video.
You guys have fair points - My footwork was really shit back then, which affected my balance. As for being outmatched, I find that I improved from fighting people who were better than me.
It is but a mild bluff thou dost espouse Sir Jabbedinthejaw - for it seems Sir Taj has bartered away yon stick for yon M-16 - but thou mightest still have but a slime chance - for they threw in no ammo...
jabbedinthejaw...O_o...ROFL!!! has spoken true words upon us (course jab I think you sorta misquoted the original...LOL), but any way it reminds me of my favorite proverbial provocated preposal...O_o
HE WHO DIES WITH THE MOST TOYS, IS STILL DEAD!!!!!!!
ROFL!!!
Jab, that was a good post, but we better be careful, taj might get after us with a stick...LOL!!!!!!!
Wow, what crappy footwork, especially the girl. Generally you don't retreat with your back foot first. And the whole hand on the hip thing looks kind of stupid. Either hold it up around your head for balance or let it hang by your side.
I bow to your superior knowldge of 19th century stick fencing. The hand on the hip is exactly what is given as the correct position by both Hutton and Phillips-Wolley. This isn't sports-fencing. And yes, you do retreat with the back foot first. Just as you advance with the front foot first. Now, if you can't keep the criticism constructive, please come round and I'll discuss it with you over a singlestick bout, sans masks.
Oops. I meant to say front foot first on the retreat thing. I probably meant to leave my comment on some other stick fencing video. The guy actually looked pretty good.
Singlestick. Totally better than Kendo and Fencing. None of that Japanese and French rubbish. All English.

What are the singlesticks made with in this case? I'm used to using japanese Shinai to make them, but these sound more solid.

The girl has no conviction and seems kind of unbalanced. The guy on the other hand has very strong form.

First chubby... now footwork.
Watch some of the more recent videos that we've put up, I think I'm improving. Certainly getting hit a lot less.
