im 25, i just watched this from start to finish, all 11 seasons plus the movie. so many things hit home, so much is a mirror of my experiences in the army, so much of the anti war theme still hits the nail on the head. this show is timeless
great tribute, awesome show.....suicide ain't painless, another good friend took her life just before Xmas leaving behind a 13 year old daughter, elderly mother (who lost her husband, my friend's father to suicide in 85) i been close but just couldn't to it to the ones who really love me....
RIP Harry, remember guys there is also AfterMASH he is in - not quite the same without Hawkeye, but includes Mulcahey, Klinger and him as their MASH characters after the war.
What's this garbage about needing uploader approval to post a comment? YouTube should be ashamed for censoring. How many times I've spent laboriously writing a long comment, intelligent and without swearing or gutter- mentality, only to be refused posting. While sickening, perverted comments are allowed all the time. What gives? Anyone agree?
Harry Morgan. The most personal character on M*A*S*H. That is someone who would be interesting to talk to in real life. As warguy 1945 says, see ya in Heaven Col.
has much more real meaning than that. I don't find it all that deprssing as the most significant line of the song is "I can take or leave it if I please" a choice we all have about life every day. It's saying, "sure, you can off yourself, but you always have the choice to go on living", which is what the doctors in the movie, and teevee show, did, choose to go on living in spite of the pain and futility of the situation they found themselves in, dealing with results of the idiocy and
suicide the easy way. The doctors in the unit go along with it, but, in a hilarious parody of Da Vinci's "Last Supper", instead of a suicide pill they give him something to make sure he gets it up. Then they slip a notoriously hot and horny nurse (not "Hot Lips") into his "death tent". She lifts up the "shroud" to discover a raging hard-on. The very next morning he's back to normal. As far as "what it's about," in the context of the movie it is just to lull Dr. Painless to "sleep". I doubt it
It seems like a lot of people posing in the thread haven't really watched the movie. Dr. Painless is widely known, in addition to being a great dentist, as being the "best hung dentist in the Army", so much so that otherwise hetero men line up to peek in amazement at his penis. (In fact, one of them says, I'd love to see that thing angry.") He becomes depressed about the war and loses his ability to get it up and decides he wants to end it all, asking his doctor buddies to help him commit
I never liked this show when I was younger, now that i'm older I watch the reruns on TVLAND all the time. I'm glad i didn't get into it as a kid..... I guess I didn't understand the depth of senseless war and now I can understand the shows serious side whilst still being somewhat comedic. Plus I enjoy seeing a lot of actors just starting out who now are old timers. One thing I just don't understand is how is suicide painless ?
God, now im crying. How i miss watching this, and even more i miss watching it with My Fiance. NO show today will EVER come close to M*A*S*H, EVER. It was a great show and the one i grew up on, and even now that im older i love it more. Cant wait till my love gets here, to watch it with me once again. always was and always will be the best show
M*A*S*H, to me, will never be forgotten in my heart, ever. Nor will the memories that come along with. Thanks 4077th M*A*S*H for making life bearable.
The words to the song are from the movie. A doctor in the MASH unit is distraught because he can't get it up. He tells the other doctors that he is going to kill himself. They play along and sing the song. The movie is funny, in a dark way vs tv show which is ha ha funny
One of the episodes that sticks out in my mind is when Mceahy found tears on the face of a soldier thought to be dead. They bring him in and save him, but he ends up dying a few hours later.
That has got to be one of the most dramatic, depressing, contemplating and life changing things that anyone would ever have to go through.
@lotsabears I have to agree with you COMPLETELY. This show was fun for the whole family. Yes it had its episodes that made you cry, and there were some that made you laugh. I remember when i was little watching this and loving it. Back then i didnt know much, but now im an adult. I miss this show on TV and now that im older i understand it more. This is probably the BEST thing to ever hit TV. This was a loved show and always will be.Good to see im not the only one that thinks this way.
@AjmorrisProductions The Manic Street Preachers do a pretty heartfelt cover of this. They should know, their lyricist and guitarist ended it for himself.
I am a MAJOR fan of M.A.S.H! I watch it on DVD every day. I have all 11 seasons. And am building a model 4077th camp, tents, O.R, CO office, and even the "O Club" and the Mess Ten.
i grew up with my dad and he served his time in vietnam and this was his favorite show because he was in the 4077th M.A.S.H brigade. Thanks for bringing back his memories :) (and yes the 4077 was a real M.A.S.H brigade)
i love this show my parents have all episodes on dvd and i learnt how to play theme song on guitar. best show from 70s - 80s. if anyone is interested ill make a video for how to play. only if people request me to though...
I really had little interest in war films or TV, but this was UNAVOIDABLE viewing, it was such a monster hit, and it was well done, better then some current medical dramas, but I think that TV intro version is the one with the most memories, since the message seems odd, just to me, I doubt it's Pro Suicide or to be taken literally
This song says more about the human race than it does one persons proposal of life and death. Individually we can chose but how do we chose in total as humans?
@mitochondrion7 The movie, where the song originally came from, really didn't get into it much, but with the series I see it as being appropriate because it's war, war is hell, these doctors are trying to patch the soldiers together again just enough so they can go out and get blown up again, and nobody knows why, least of all the surgeons who have to save the lives day in and day out. Personally I think it fits.
@mitochondrion7 because, it's aboout a mobile hospital set in a middle of a war, during war, people die, the loss of life is what is the sad part. One of my uncles was in the actual korean war. one day a north korean division flanked his unit, one of the north koreans shot his bunk mate in the back, & in turn, my uncle stuck the bayonette in the rear end. It's also know as the forgotten war of which Nearly 37,000 American servicemen lost their lives in 3 yrs. most in the 1st yr.
I always loved the theme to MASH, never heard the lyrics though.I recently lost a nephew to suicide. suicide is NOT painless. why can't people be nicer to each other? Those of you that are HOMOphobic, I hope you realize SOMEONE in your family is gay and you will loose them if you don't change.Homosexuality is NOT a choice or disease, Homophobia is.
i watched this with my dad and big brother when i was a young kid ,didnt get the humour or the politics of it but stil get my nostalga vote every time .One of the programmes on tv you can always take in ,a lot better than half the shit thats on now
Suicide is painless if you stick a hose on the end of a tail-pipe and put it inside your car and let the carbon monoxide choke your thoughts away because you feel all alone in life and your friends are never around in your time of need
Imagine if a show had this type of theme song today. They would either turn it off or make them change. I'm 19, but I remember my grandma used to watch the re-runs of MASH, Dukes or Hazard and Dallas when I was little. I don't remember much about the show, but I remember I used to run around the house singing the song as a kid
@dlhsonic listen Little fella, it is painless, and it brings on many changes, and I can take or leave it if I please. So next time you go wishin someone to die, at least live a quarter century first, and it'd help to not be on the teet next time.
@nastyNate694 I'm old enough to recognize a useless idiot when I see one. There was absolutely no reason to insult me in the first place. I usually recommend suicide to every idiot I encounter no matter the age and in your case, I would highly recommend it. I don't want to continue to argue with you on this comment section out of courtesy to everyone else so this is my last post on this video. You should act your age (what ever it may be) before you start an argument with a stranger on youtube
Sad commentary on the world that sadly hasn't gotten better, thousands still dying daily around the world because they can't love are or respect the lives of others.
who can not like Mash it is the PERFECT show: Clean, classic, hilarious, and makes memorize a FREIKEN 10 POUND BOOK ( i really did memorize a 10lbs book), Its the perfect show for any young or old!
man ive seen every episode about 10 times and i just done a search for the team and found this and listens the the lyrics and man that just brings that "police action in to prospective don't it ! inn not a USA resident but wow i feel for the poor gitts that had to serve in those conditions .. i know M*A*S*H was a "comedy show" but it bung a lot of truth within its laughs .. Hale to all the "selfless people in war" what is war but bloodshed ! there is just no need !
great song. not a wonderful arrangement. as i remember in the movie it used a guitar player singer. i think the singer was short and african-american and played chords on an acoustic guitar while singing. again if i remember he was a great singer unlike the elevator music type arrangement in this video
probably appropriate because TV show was pale version if the movie. a lot of folks loved it but if they at all remembered the movie, they may not have been so keen on the TV Show
@verbenco The singer here is the same as the movie. I've just finished comparing, and it seems that the arrangements are the same, but the mixing in the movie is slightly different. I've watched every single TV episode, and I think the earlier seasons are certainly better.
@weetbixthecat this is very curious - after posting i checked tv show and heard an instrumental version which, i thought not to good.. maybe earlier shows were different, but i used to watch the show even though i did not like it to much. can't think why--.at any rate i also did not remember movie very well either since suicide scene had a guitar player and singer not someone who did both. possible explanation - maybe i am getting truly old and remember the past as better than it was.
@verbenco Hi, Sorry but your right. I though you were initially referring to the theme song (in the movie it is sung as here, which is what I was referring to. In the shows its just an instrumental). But the suicide scene does have another singer (so the movie has 2 versions). It is a young black guy as you remembered, he's accompanied by another doctor who plays the acoustic. Don't worry your not going senile :-) (perhaps I am?)
What a brilliant song, loved the way you used the clips from the show - brought back great memories of being little and watching it with my parents on a Friday night. Thanks so much!
My my..this brings back many fond memories of this tv show. I remember way back in the late 60`s, I fell asleep to this song...yes, took me way back--good job!
Love it all. Catch it whenever I can. One of m favs is the one when the group watches 'My darling Clementine' with Henry Fonda and bond i'n the meanwhile. :) my love of both the mix of the show with my love of classic film. A!
I have list many family members. This song and show makes me want to cry and smile. I'm only 38 but have seen every show and love everyone. I hope that the person who started making me watch them is still watching them and enjoying them.
I liked BJ more than the guy they had before him but I liked Frank more than Winchester. I also liked the guy they got to replace Mclean when they killed him off more than Mclean. Anyway you cut it it was a great show, its final episode still holds its spot as the most watched thing on television in the history of, well ever, millions of people tuned in and watch the final episode and no episodes has ever been more viewed, that just proves how awesome it was.
Alan Alda forced the producers to include a bloody operating scene in every episode, so as to show the grim reality of warfare. If they didn't do that, he was going to quit the show.
Some think it's about suicide (say life would be better), some say it's about war. I personaly think it's about suicide cuz 1st was this song, then MASH. But you can understand it like an "about war song" too. I made some kind of picture video for this song (suicide understood) and posted it as videoanswer.
@nhlpens you should look at it another way, you 'win' every day, it's been a long time since I visited this vid and I'm glad I'm still here so keep on keeping on, life is short.
@Bite2Drink this is a song for ppl joining army. hawkey calls war a sensless destruction. mash 4007 is all about how ppl are great, strong, wonderful (sometimes stupid, absurd and sensless too)and how precious is life. life is worth living at least out of curiosity. i often thank for ALL i went through in my life & all ppl i met. Alan Alda is great (&others too as well :) This song is irony not invitation.

On a cold and wet sunday afternoon I just LOVE to watch some MASH-episodes on DVD.
I missed Trapper when he left, I missed kol. Blake when he left, I missed Frank when he left
but BJ, kol. Potter and CWIII were fantastic actors so I was very happy again. Later I also
missed Radar. I must confess: all these people became some kind of family for me.
So it was too bad when the series stopped.
Writing this down I realise I miss them all a lot. Damn, now I am sad....

MrCoal11 10 months ago
Imagine if a show had this type of theme song today. They would either turn it off or make them change. I'm 19, but I remember my grandma used to watch the re-runs of MASH, Dukes or Hazard and Dallas when I was little. I don't remember much about the show, but I remember I used to run around the house singing the song as a kid

@dlhsonic Everyones grandma watched this show, and Dallas was fucking Gay, so shutup and fuckin deal pussy. god u sound soo needy.

@nastyNate694 Get a life you stupid trick. Suicide would suit you well, so do it soon please
dlhsonic 10 months ago
@dlhsonic listen Little fella, it is painless, and it brings on many changes, and I can take or leave it if I please. So next time you go wishin someone to die, at least live a quarter century first, and it'd help to not be on the teet next time.
nastyNate694 10 months ago
@nastyNate694 I'm old enough to recognize a useless idiot when I see one. There was absolutely no reason to insult me in the first place. I usually recommend suicide to every idiot I encounter no matter the age and in your case, I would highly recommend it. I don't want to continue to argue with you on this comment section out of courtesy to everyone else so this is my last post on this video. You should act your age (what ever it may be) before you start an argument with a stranger on youtube

@dlhsonic You sound extremely Butt-Hurt.

is it just me or does this seem a little to up beat for a song about suicide?

Sad commentary on the world that sadly hasn't gotten better, thousands still dying daily around the world because they can't love are or respect the lives of others.

Hale to all the "selfless people in war" what is war but bloodshed ! there is just no need !

Yeah. I thought Hot-Lips Houlihan acted like way too much of a 60's feminist in a show that took place a whole decade earlier.

great song. not a wonderful arrangement. as i remember in the movie it used a guitar player singer. i think the singer was short and african-american and played chords on an acoustic guitar while singing. again if i remember he was a great singer unlike the elevator music type arrangement in this video
probably appropriate because TV show was pale version if the movie. a lot of folks loved it but if they at all remembered the movie, they may not have been so keen on the TV Show
verbenco 11 months ago
@verbenco The singer here is the same as the movie. I've just finished comparing, and it seems that the arrangements are the same, but the mixing in the movie is slightly different. I've watched every single TV episode, and I think the earlier seasons are certainly better.
weetbixthecat 11 months ago
@weetbixthecat this is very curious - after posting i checked tv show and heard an instrumental version which, i thought not to good.. maybe earlier shows were different, but i used to watch the show even though i did not like it to much. can't think why--.at any rate i also did not remember movie very well either since suicide scene had a guitar player and singer not someone who did both. possible explanation - maybe i am getting truly old and remember the past as better than it was.
verbenco 11 months ago
@verbenco Hi, Sorry but your right. I though you were initially referring to the theme song (in the movie it is sung as here, which is what I was referring to. In the shows its just an instrumental). But the suicide scene does have another singer (so the movie has 2 versions). It is a young black guy as you remembered, he's accompanied by another doctor who plays the acoustic. Don't worry your not going senile :-) (perhaps I am?)
weetbixthecat 11 months ago
just wondering...what version is this? just a studio version of one in mash or another cover version by some one else?

I liked BJ more than the guy they had before him but I liked Frank more than Winchester. I also liked the guy they got to replace Mclean when they killed him off more than Mclean. Anyway you cut it it was a great show, its final episode still holds its spot as the most watched thing on television in the history of, well ever, millions of people tuned in and watch the final episode and no episodes has ever been more viewed, that just proves how awesome it was.

Alan Alda forced the producers to include a bloody operating scene in every episode, so as to show the grim reality of warfare. If they didn't do that, he was going to quit the show.

@movadoband if someone commits suicide it is still part of God's plan. He lets it happen. You can't escape God no matter how you try.

Some think it's about suicide (say life would be better), some say it's about war. I personaly think it's about suicide cuz 1st was this song, then MASH. But you can understand it like an "about war song" too. I made some kind of picture video for this song (suicide understood) and posted it as videoanswer.

Or maybe the fact that alot of soldiers serving in wars commit suicide after the war is over.

@nhlpens Some people kill themselves during war too...Just as alot of them did in korea.

You know, I can understand why soldiers that come home from wars commit suicide or go insane.
I have a daily battle with my illness and I keep losing every day.

@nhlpens you should look at it another way, you 'win' every day, it's been a long time since I visited this vid and I'm glad I'm still here so keep on keeping on, life is short.

Bite2Drink 1 year ago
@Bite2Drink this is a song for ppl joining army. hawkey calls war a sensless destruction. mash 4007 is all about how ppl are great, strong, wonderful (sometimes stupid, absurd and sensless too)and how precious is life. life is worth living at least out of curiosity. i often thank for ALL i went through in my life & all ppl i met. Alan Alda is great (&others too as well :) This song is irony not invitation.
