Slash is a straight up blues rock guitarist, and plays as such, Paul Gilbert on the other hand is one of the most technically skilled guitarists and he can play anything from blues to insanely fast metal. There's no doubt who will win if we compare technical skills.
I still prefer listening to Slash, though. Paul is great, but I'm more of a blues guy. Video is stupid.

No speed isn't everything. Paul puts a load of feeling into his songs these are just his solos, listen to his newest albums if you still need convincing. Even so, as many have pointed out, this comparison is invalid, you can't compare styles... Although saying that, Paul is Technically superior to Slash and that is fact.

Slash has written many memorable guitar riffs that are beautiful, catchy and raw,that his guitar work is among those that define rock n' roll. Who cares about who's more talented? At the end of the day, those menacing/beautiful riffs you hear in Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion albums are Slash's guitar. That counts the most.

I just love Slash because he's the reason I even play guitar and Guns N' Roses is my #1 band, regardless of whether they were popular or not. I can't deny that some of my favorite sounds on the guitar that make me high are those sounds coming out of Slash's Les Paul. Maybe thats why I prefer him over Gilbert. Paul is the better guitarist hands down (i don't think that's even an opinion). But Slash has the image, and was the one to come up with pretty much all memorable GnR riffs and solos. Paul is the better guitarist, but Slash is the better rock star.

Okay for the sake of argument here it is speed vs soul. Paul is technically sound, but slash is for the average person. Those who play the guitar like Gilbert for his chops and flowing technique, for the regular average joe who just listens, they go with slash. I agree that a simple riff of slash is catchy i.e. Sweet Child of Mine, Welcome to the jungle, November Rain. I am a guitar player so I go with Paul, but that doesn't mean I don't like slash either. @Fluffypopcicle I will not deny that Paul Gilbert is the more talented player, but this is MUSIC. In music, what counts the most is the music that is created. Slash has written many memorable guitar riffs that are beautiful, catchy and raw,that his guitar work is among those that define rock n' roll. Who cares about who's more talented? At the end of the day, those menacing/beautiful riffs you hear in Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion albums are Slash's guitar. That counts the most.

@Fluffypopcicle Hey, I am a big fan of Steve Vai and he's not exactly mainstream either. I just love Slash because he's the reason I even play guitar and Guns N' Roses is my #1 band, regardless of whether they were popular or not. I can't deny that some of my favorite sounds on the guitar that make me high are those sounds coming out of Slash's Les Paul. Maybe thats why I prefer him over Gilbert. It's not so much who is the most talented, but whats most important is who do you like the most.

true, but you can't ever say "blank is better than blank because i like him better." slash is also the reason why i picked up the guitar. buckethead is the reason that i actually progressed in my guitar playing. paul gilbert is the reason i can shred. shawn lane is the reason i like playing out of the box style stuff. jeff loomis, rusty cooley, and jason becker are the reasons why i love arpeggios so much. lots of musical influences, it's all what's important to you.

@Aremine One, because he was the lead guitarist of one the greatest rock n' roll bands ever, Guns N' Roses. Two, because he wrote many rock n' roll anthem riffs that every rock fan knows. You will rarely see a list of greatest riffs without at least one of Slash's masterpieces up there. Three, he has an amazing sense of melody...its easy to sound impressive when some plays fast, but its hard to sound impressive when u play slow. Slash clearly demonstrates that skill. You can think like him and use his faviorite scale or lick but he still has a different mind then you, meaning the way a scale gets processed into a fill or solo is different than the way you will. Slash can't play EXACTLY like Paul Gilbert and the same vice versa.

Okay for the sake of argument here it is speed vs soul. Paul is technically sound, but slash is for the average person. Those who play the guitar like Gilbert for his chops and flowing technique, for the regular average joe who just listens, they go with slash. I agree that a simple riff of slash is catchy i.e. Sweet Child of Mine, Welcome to the jungle, November Rain. I am a guitar player so I go with Paul, but that doesn't mean I don't like slash either. I think it is unfair to compare them.
